Sea The Moon’s Fantastic Moon Wins The Winterfavoriten

Off the mark on debut over seven furlongs at Munich Sept. 12, Liberty Racing 2021's Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Frangipani {Ger}, by Jukebox Jury {Ire}) pitched his case as one of Germany's leading Classic contenders for 2023 in Sunday's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten at Cologne. Settled in mid-division early by Rene Piechulek, the Sarah Steinberg-trained 14-5 shot stayed in his group of three racing away from the remainder.

Drifting left in the straight to join the others towards the stand's rail, the bay had the lead approaching the furlong pole and was driven out to ward off the G3 Zukunfts-Rennen runner-up See Paris (Ger) (Counterattack {Aus}) by half a length, with 2 3/4 lengths back to Arcandi (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}) in third. “He's a cool guy,” Piechulek told galopponline.de., while his partner Steinberg added, “He was growing for a long time, but after his success he made another real leap.”

Pedigree Notes
Fantastic Moon is the second foal out of Frangipani, a half-sister to the G3 Sveat Minnelop winner Fearless Hunter (Ger) (Alhaarth {Ire}) from the family of the G3 Rockfel S. winner Germane (GB) (Distant Relative [Ire}). She in turn produced the GI Hollywood Derby and GII Virginia Derby-placed Lucky Chappy (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), while others featuring are the G3 Prestige S. winner Kilmah (GB) (Sepoy {Aus}), one of the current stars of racing in the States, Jack Christopher (Munnings), and the dual top-level-winning sire Street Boss. Frangipani also has a yearling filly by Starspangledbanner (Aus) named Fang Mich (Ger) and a filly foal by Masar (Ire).

Cologne Poised For Winterfavoriten

Germany gets ready to crown its leading 2-year-old on Sunday, with Cologne's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten aiming to do exactly that; to unveil the ante-post Deutsches Derby favourite to keep the purists warm during the cold months. Sarah Steinberg saddles Liberty Racing 2021's exciting Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), who starred on debut over seven furlongs at Munich Sept. 12, while Gestut Ebbesloh's Peter Schiergen-trained Arcandi (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}) shares a similar profile having scored on debut at this mile trip at Hoppegarten Sept. 16. Cometica AG's See Paris (Ger) (Counterattack {Aus}) found only TDN Rising Star Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB}) too strong in the seven-furlong G3 Zukunfts-Rennen at Baden-Baden at the end of August and the full-brother to this year's G3 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) winner See Hector (Ger) may have a speed edge on his rivals.

Future Stars on Show on Sunday

While Sunday's action is a notch or two below that of Saturday, there are two fascinating contests in Germany and Ireland to savour in the G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten and the Listed Staffordstown Stud S.

In the former at Cologne, Gestut Ittlingen's Antero (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}) looks as exciting as any of the line-up following his seven-length maiden win at Dortmund Sept. 19. Gestut Rottgen's Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) was second to the filly Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire} in the Listed Junioren-Preis at Dusseldorf Sept. 12, with the re-opposing Millionaire (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Sea Bay (Ger) (New Bay {GB}) behind in third and fourth.

The Curragh's Staffordstown Stud S. over a mile sees Newtown Anner Stud Farm's 'TDN Rising Star' Angels Wrath (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) bid to build on the impression of her emphatic debut win over seven furlongs on Dundalk's Polytrack Sept. 24. She will have to be every bit as smart as she looked there on her turf debut against the likes of Martin Schwartz's Sept. 11 Listed Ingabelle S. second Limiti Di Greccio (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) and Lindsay Laroche's Sept. 12 G1 Moyglare Stud S. third and Aug. 21 G2 Debutante S. and Sept. 26 G3 Weld Park S. runner-up Sunset Shiraz (Ire) (Time Test {GB}).
