The King’s Desert Hero Notches Gordon Success At Goodwood

King Charles III's 'TDN Rising Star' Desert Hero (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Desert Breeze {GB}, by Dubawi {Ire}) represents the last chance of a Classic winner for His Majesty in the inaugural year of his reign and the William Haggas trainee went some way to making that a reality with a narrow verdict in Thursday's G3 John Pearce Racing Gordon S. at Goodwood.

Positioned at the tail of the six-runner field through halfway in this staging post for next month's G1 St Leger, the 7-1 chance was shaken up to go second approaching the final furlong and stayed on strongly under a late drive to deny Godolphin's Listed Glasgow S. scorer Chesspiece (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) by a neck in the dying strides. The latter, in turn, finished three lengths clear of Listed Feilden S. victor Canberra Legend (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in third.

“It was not the easiest watch, but Tom [Marquand] said he always thought he was going to win,” revealed Maureen Haggas. “The important thing with this horse is getting him switched off early, which he did really well, and I think if you can do that, you can let the rest of the race unfold. Desert Hero has guts, he wants to win and that counts for a lot. Desert Hero could go further and the obvious aim would be the [G1] St Leger. You never really know until you try, but there's no reason not to try. We are so lucky to be training for The King and Queen and to have a horse as good as this, and I am sure they will be enjoying it and good luck to them.”

John Warren, racing manager to Their Majesties The King and Queen, added, “It is remarkable and so lovely to have a horse in the stable that is so committed. Royal Ascot was wonderful when he cut through horses [to win the King George V H.] and so wanted the race. Desert Hero is an incredible horse, so for The King and Queen to have a horse of this calibre in their first year, taking on from The Queen and with a horse that was bred by her, is a dream come true. They are so excited and so thrilled. The King told me many years ago that he was always going to be committed to taking on the bloodstock portfolio [from his mother] and, true to his word, he has been fascinated by it because now it is on his watch. The story is wonderful for racing in particular because The Queen [Camilla] is so interested and they get such pleasure together out of it.”

Reflecting on the performance of runner-up Chesspiece, trainer Simon Crisford said, “Chesspiece wants a mile-and-six [furlongs] and we just got outpaced at a crucial moment. He loved the ground and ran his heart out and the [G1] St Leger dream is still alive.”

Desert Hero, half-brother to a yearling filly by Fastnet Rock (Aus) and a weanling colt by Kingman {GB}, is the first of three foals out of an unraced full-sister to multiple Group-winning GI Canadian International runner-up and G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. third Dartmouth (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). The January-foaled chesnut's dam Desert Breeze (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is also kin to dual Group 2 winner Manatee (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), Listed Prix du Carrousel victrix Gaterie (Dubai Destination) and to the dam of dual stakes-winning GIII Red Sea Turf H. third Siskany (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). His fourth dam is the G2 Prix de l'Opera-placed matriarch Albertine (Fr) (Irish River {Fr}), whose swathe of stakes descendants is headed by GI Breeders' Cup Classic and G1 Prix d'Ispahan hero Arcangues (Sagace {Fr}).

Dubawi’s New London Battles To Gordon Success

Godolphin's highly regarded 3-year-old colt New London (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Bright Beacon {GB}, by Manduro {Ger}) bounced back from a first reversal in May's G3 Chester Vase to annex a 10-furlong Newmarket handicap last time and continued on an upward trajectory with victory in Thursday's G3 John Pearce Racing Gordon S at Goodwood. The 6-4 favourite, who had garnered 10-furlong tests at Newmarket last October and in April on seasonal return, settled off the tempo in sixth until inching closer in the straight. Coming under pressure with three furlongs remaining, he bounded to the front passing the quarter-mile marker and, having subdued G1 Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) inside the final furlong, was driven out for a 1 3/4-length career high as that rival was collared for second by G3 Bahrain Trophy victor Deauville Legend (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the dying strides.

“New London is a lovely horse and has done nothing but improve,” said assistant trainer Alex Merriam. “He ran in the Derby trial [at Chester] and then Charlie thought to miss the Derby, which I think paid the dividends. I am not sure of plans. He is not in the [G2] Great Voltigeur and Charlie said that we will let the dust settle and see how he comes out of it. We will make a plan next week to see where everything goes. I am sure Charlie will come up with the best plan. It is very hard to say [which is the best of the Godolphin St Leger hopefuls]. New London has won the Group race, the others have won handicaps and they are all nice, progressive horses. Dubawis tend to improve and are tough, and that is what you need. I think Will came a bit wide with his run, but he didn't mention anything untoward. Charlie's horses are in great order and long may it continue.”

Buick added, “New London is a proper horse, he always has been, and he is very exciting. The Derby prep didn't go well, but we are delighted to get him back and Charlie and his team have done a great job. He is a very good horse. We went a good pace and I wasn't following the horse I wanted to, so we were in front earlier than ideal. However, he is a strong galloper and saw it out well. This was always going to be a challenge for him and he has come through it with flying colours. He's got plenty of class, I'm delighted and there's plenty more to come. It's hard to be confident, but we can be hopeful about the [G1] St Leger trip. Those [additional] two furlongs are a long two furlongs, so we'll see. He relaxes well and gives himself every chance. Hopefully he will [stay the extended 14-furlong trip]. That was a deep Gordon field with the Derby second, he has passed the test and let's see if he can do it.”

Daniel Muscutt, rider of Deauville Legend, commented, “It was a good run and he found a rhythm behind the [eventual] winner. There was plenty of pace early doors and he cruised into the race nicely. He couldn't quite match New London's turn of foot, but he ground it out well. The last 100 yards he stuck on past Hoo Ya Mal and it was a gutsy effort with the penalty. I thought that [the penalty] was maybe the difference.”

Hoo Ya Mal's trainer George Boughey said, “We took the hood off, he relaxed and has run a great race. The plan has always been the [G1] Melbourne Cup and this is a stepping-stone to that. Ryan [Moore] was delighted, Gai [Waterhouse] is very happy and the owner who has come over to watch the race is very happy. Ryan said that he has run a very good race and that he did it all the right way round, which is what we wanted to see. Ryan lost his stick with about two-and-a-half furlongs to go, which might not have helped. It's all about just looking after him because he has a big career ahead in Australia.”

New London is the fourth of five foals and one of three winners produced by a daughter of G2 Falmouth S. runner-up Waldmark (Ger) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a full-brother to stakes-winning G2 Queen's Vase third Al Dabaran (GB) and half to a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB). Descendants of Waldmark include her G1 St Leger-winning son Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning grandson Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).

Mogul Swoops For Gordon Triumph

Off the board in three starts since claiming last term’s G2 Champions Juvenile S. at Leopardstown, Coolmore’s Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was one of the main closers when sixth in last month’s G1 Epsom Derby and stepped back up to the plate to gain compensation in Thursday’s G3 John Pearce Racing Gordon S. at Goodwood. Steadied off the clear leader in fourth after an alert getaway, the 9-2 chance was coaxed forward once leaving the three-furlong marker behind and swooped late under a power drive to provide a third success for Aidan O’Brien in this renowned stepping stone to elite-level glory. The April-foaled bay’s late surge carried him 3/4-of-a-length beyond Highland Chief (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) with the same margin back to the game pacesetter Subjectivity (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) in third. “These horses are in good form, he was tough there and Aidan always said he’d be just right for his third run,” said winning rider Ryan Moore, whose win left Frankie Dettori behind on four as he moved to within one of Sir Gordon Richards and Willie Carson’s joint-record haul of six in the contest. “We’ve always thought a lot of him and I’m very happy with what he’s done today. He’s still a bit babyish and can only progress further,” the rider added.

“We always thought that Mogul was going to take two runs and we were hoping to get that into him before the Derby, but obviously the Derby was only his second run and this was his third today,” explained Aidan O’Brien, who saddled Yellowstone (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) to win this in 2007 and Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2015. “We said this race would suit him, we’re delighted with him and think there is more to come. We were thinking of going to the [Sept. 13 G1] Grand Prix de Paris [at ParisLongchamp] with him next, maybe, and that was the plan if everything went well today. We always thought he was a lovely horse and a horse that was going to suit the Derby, but we thought it would take a couple of runs to get him there. When you look at him he’s built like a miler. He’s a big, strong, powerful horse and carries a lot of muscle and weight so he was always going to take racing to get him tuned up. We weren’t really sure about this horse at a mile-and-a-half, but he toughed it out and it looks like he got it today.”

Fitri Hay’s homebred Golden Gates H. winner Highland Chief (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) was a never-threatening 10th in the G1 Epsom Derby and bounced back from that disappointment with a career-best effort here. “We are very, very pleased with the horse,” said trainer Oliver Cole. “I would have to see the race again, but [rider] David Probert thought Mogul came up and he went again. Ryan has obviously ridden a peach and we are very happy to know that we have a very good horse. The advantage we had today was that there weren’t many runners so there wasn’t much hustle and bustle. He could relax and enjoy it without being cramped, which played to his advantage. Maybe the [G2 Great] Voltigeur [at York] next, although it might come a little bit quick.” Bjorn Nielsen’s G1 Epsom Derby fifth English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) went off for this retrieval mission as the 5-4 favourite, but was the first to come under pressure in the straight before staying on without troubling the leaders to finish fourth. “He came off the bridle too early and he was staying on at the end,” said Frankie Dettori. “We are toying with the idea of the [G1] St Leger [at Doncaster].”

Mogul, who was the second-highest priced transaction at Tattersalls’ 2018 October Book 1 yearling sale when knocked down to M V Magnier for 3.4-million guineas, is one of six winners out of Listed Pontefract Castle S. second Shastye (Ire) (Danehill), herself half to G1SW sires Sagamix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) and Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}). He is thus a full-brother to G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Juddmonte International hero Japan (GB), GSW G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 German Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture (GB), G3 International S. victor Sir Isaac Newton (GB) and a yearling filly. From a family also featuring G1 Prix d’Ispahan-winning sire Sageburg (Ire) (Johannesburg), Mogul is also a half to MGSP Listed Ipswich Cup winner Maurus (GB) (Medicean {GB}) and to the unraced dam of Listed Height of Fashion S. runner-up Shaherezada (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}).
