Kodiac’s Indestructible Continues Amo’s Flying Start In The Craven

Beaten twice by Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at two but evidently unbowed, the aptly-named Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Shareva {Ire}, by Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) marked his debut for the Karl Burke stable with a win in Newmarket's G3 Craven S. to continue Amo Racing's strong start to the current campaign on Thursday. Able to get into some kind of fight with Andrew Balding's leading 2000 Guineas hope in York's G3 Acomb S., he was put in his place when last seen in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster in September but re-emerged to underline the strength of that peer and further his own case for the imminent course-and-distance Classic.

Keen early for Kevin Stott, the 8-1 shot who was trained by Michael O'Callaghan as a juvenile pulled his way to the front after the first two furlongs with another Balding runner in The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) tracking his every move away from the remainder. Tackled by that G2 Royal Lodge S. winner heading towards the dip, the bay pulled out more to gain the upper hand in the last 150 yards and score by 1 1/4 lengths, with Dancing Magic (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) 1 3/4 lengths further behind in third and Godolphin's 15-8 favourite Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) a disappointing last of the seven.

“This is a lovely, scopey horse,” Burke said. “I got a phone call just before Christmas asking if we'd take him and I'm not going to turn down horses like him. We had a couple of niggles with him physically after he arrived, nothing major, but because of those niggles I'm sure he's having a good blow today and he'll improve. I'd say I'd have to fight Kia [Joorabchian] now not to come back here in two weeks' time. He deserves his chance, I'm sure.”

King Power's racing manager Alistair Donald said of The Foxes, “This was always going to be a prep for the Dante and the Derby is the main focus. Today he's travelled great, looked like he was going to win the race and just got tired. I think he was a bit lonely out in front there as well. It's quite exciting and we're perfectly on track for the plan.”

Pedigree Notes

Indestructible's dam Shareva was a fairly fast maiden herself, although her Aga Khan family offers the usual element of stamina to complement the speed influence of Kodiac. She is a daughter of Shareen (Ire) (Bahri), who was successful in the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies S. before producing the dual G2 Blandford S. scorer Shamreen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who is in turn the dam of last year's G2 Railway S. winner and G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Phoenix S. third Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Shareva, who is also a half to the G3 Singspiel S. scorer Shahroze (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), has a 2-year-old full-sister to the winner who was sold for 320,000gns to Cheveley Park Stud at the Book 2 Sale and is now named Summit (Ire), while her yearling filly is by Ghaiyyath (Ire).

Another Shadwell Star To Shine In the Craven?

There is no doubt that, in general, Newmarket's G3 Craven S. has lost much of its former relevance as a 2000 Guineas trial, but in the last two years it has enjoyed a revival with winners Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) going close in the mile Classic. Godolphin and Charlie Appleby have another leading man this time in the GI Summer S. and G3 Prix Francois Boutin scorer Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), but the one that really catches the eye is Shadwell's Kempton novice winner Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). A half-brother to the G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire) and four-time group winner Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the John and Thady Gosden-trained grey is tested earlier than that pair with extra precocity from the sire.

“They've all been happy with him at home, so with the season starting we need to know where we are with him,” Angus Gold said. “He's still entered in the Guineas and I'm imagining that will come too quick for him, but let's see how we get on Thursday. He's the least experienced in the field and it will tell us a lot more in terms of his class and the track and all those things. It's a learning curve.”

The Case For Chaldean…

He may not be running until Saturday, but Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is indirectly involved in the Craven with Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) just half a length behind Juddmonte's leading 2000 Guineas contender in York's G3 Acomb S. and 3 1/2 lengths in arrears in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster, where Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was behind. Now with Karl Burke, Amo Racing's big Guineas hope is up to a mile for the first time and racing and operations manager Tom Pennington believes that will see improvement.

“His pedigree suggests he will get a mile and he got seven furlongs well last year as a two-year-old,” he said. “The form is there. He has to make the improvement from two to three, but he definitely has the scope to do that and the form is in the book so he will be a nice three-year-old going forward hopefully.”

King Power's course-and-distance G2 Royal Lodge S. winner The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) will provide Chaldean's trainer Andrew Balding with more of an idea where he stands ahead of the May 6 Classic, while Isa Salman Al Khalifa's G3 Horris Hill S. third Ancestral Land (GB) (Sioux Nation) can not be left out of equations.

“His whole demeanour gives us the impression he will get a mile and we hope that will be possible,” trainer Clive Cox said. “I trained his dam to win over five furlongs, but he is a horse that has done exceptionally well physically and he hit the line well over seven last year.”

On The Trail Again

Charlie Appleby has two strong hands to play in the upcoming 2000 Guineas and one of them, the European champion juvenile Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream (GB), enjoys a surprise if welcome prep in Wednesday's G3 bet365 Craven S. at Newmarket. It's the age-old question, can the one who was at the apex the previous year maintain his dominion after the winter sojourn? It is necessary to go back to the mid-nineties and the likes of Alhaarth (Ire) (Unfuwain) and Xaar (GB) (Zafonic) to recall reigning champions taking in this trial en route to the first Classic and Godolphin's chief sophomore provides the race with a shot in the arm. There is nothing in his trainer's recent emissions to suggest that he has any concerns about the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Dewhurst S. hero, with this being more of a wake-up call than anything else.

“We are very confident at the moment and the team is in good form,” he said. “He has wintered very well and we have been pleased with his preparation, so we don't have any negatives going into this. It's only two and a half weeks until the 2000 Guineas, so we feel he is not going to need the run in the Craven, but it will help click his racing brain back into gear. It's of more benefit mentally rather than physically.”

TDN Rising Stars Assembling

Taking on Native Trail are two TDN Rising Stars in Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Al Mubhir (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who represent Ballydoyle and William Haggas respectively. The former took the eye when scoring on debut over seven furlongs at Leopardstown in October, while Al Mubhir beat a clutch of subsequent winners in a maiden over that trip on this course earlier that month.

Tom Marquand takes the mount on Al Mubhir and said, “He is a beautiful model, but he has done well for having that break. It is a stiff task second time out to try and win a Craven, but there is a reason he is in there and that is because William likes him and the team likes him. Our lad will be learning on the job a little bit and hopefully we will learn a bit more about him at the same time and what will be will be with Native Trail.”

A River Runs Through It

In the six-furlong G3 Connaught Access Flooring Abernant S., Al Shaqab Racing's Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) is the main player following his success in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh in August. With no stand-out older sprinter in attendance, Hugo Palmer's stable star will be a warm order to get his campaign off to a flyer.

“We've decided to put a line through trying to make him stay, but I'm just really looking forward to running him at Newmarket. It wouldn't surprise me if we ended up going back to five for the King's Stand if he's good enough.”

Nell Gwyn Headlines Craven Meet’s Day 1 Card

The Classic trials caravan rolls into Newmarket today with the Rowley Mile venue primed and ready to host a seven-race card and open its three-day Craven fixture. Sophomore fillies take centre stage on day one with nine set for another competitive edition of HQ's G3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn S. over a straight seven furlongs. Middleham Park Racing's 2012 victrix Esentepe (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) is the only winner since the turn of the century to have undertaken a preparatory run, so the trends are not in favour of Scuderia Archi Romani & Partner's hitherto undefeated Ribbon Rose (GB) (Time Test {GB}), who makes her stakes bow coming back off seven-furlong score at Kempton last month. She had previously graduated over this course and distance in October.

Top billing in this G1 1000 Guineas trial is shared by familiar rivals Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), with the former leading their ongoing series 2-1. Amo Racing's Hello You placed ahead of Cachet in Royal Ascot's G3 Albany S. and was too good for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's 'TDN Rising Star' when best in September's G2 Rockfel S. over this strip.

“Hello You might just need her first race,” admitted trainer David Loughnane. “If she does, she does, but if she doesn't, she'll be there in the business of things. It is a long season ahead and we didn't want to overcook her. She has grown nicely, she has done very well and we are very happy with her. She did a nice piece of work 10 days ago at Wolverhampton and we are very pleased with her. She has proved she goes on any ground and has handled most tracks. She was very consistent last year and you never know until you run them whether they have trained on or not, but she has certainly shown the right signs.”

Cachet gained a small measure of revenge when a close-up fourth, one place and 3/4-of-a-length ahead of Hello You, in Del Mar's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last November. “That [Breeders' Cup] form was given a good boost when Francis-Henri Graffard's horse [Malavath] won [the G3 Prix Imprudence] in France and that was nice to see,” said trainer George Boughey. “Although Cachet was busy at two, she had a good break in the middle of the summer and had a proper break at the National Stud in the winter. Fortunately, she has come back and not missed a day's training, so it is one of those things where she has been pretty straightforward. If she had missed, she would be behind the kick, but she hasn't. She looks great, she is a filly who got physically better as the year went on and I think she will do that again. I think her career best was on firm ground at Del Mar and I have never really worried about the ground with her. She has a fast-ground action and seems to handle anything. This is a good stepping stone [to the G1 1000 Guineas] and looks a race where she should be very competitive.”

William Stone trainee Romantic Time (GB) (Time Test {GB}) is better than her seventh to Hello You and Cachet in the Rockfel and had Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's Perfect News (GB) (Frankel {GB}) back in eighth when annexing Salisbury's G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. earlier in September. British bookmakers rate Perfect News, who has since finished third in the Oct. 8 G3 Oh So Sharp S. over course and distance, as a 5-1 chance and Romantic Time at much higher odds of 16-1.

Five have been nominated for the first stakes heat of the day and Godolphin's Listed Pat Eddery S. winner and G3 Prix La Rochette fourth New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) will be a warm order for the Listed European Free H., another Guineas trial over seven furlongs.

The €260,000 Arqana Select yearling has the benefit of match fitness this term, having posted a staying-on third tackling one mile in Meydan's Feb. 3 Listed Jumeirah Classic when last seen, and Charlie Appleby is hopeful of a good effort in this European return. “New Science has definitely come forward from his run in Dubai,” the trainer revealed. “If he brings the best of his 2-year-old form to the table, it will make him very competitive.”

He is confronted by Shadwell's homebred Ribhi (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who bookended a fifth in September's Listed Flying Scotsman S. at Doncaster with victories in six-furlong contests at Salisbury, Listed Prix Zeddaan victrix Honey Sweet (Ire) (Adday {Ire}), the Richard Hannon-trained G3 Horris Hill S. third Tacarib Bay (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and Listed Stonehenge S. second Power of Beauty (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}). “Ribhi seems to be going there in good form, he is in good shape and I'm looking forward to seeing him run,” said trainer Marcus Tregoning. “Hopefully he will run well and we gauge something from the race, although it is difficult to gauge things in a small field. It is a fact-finding mission, but going back up in trip should help.”

Godolphin's G1 2000 Guineas second Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who snagged this meet's G3 Craven S. last year, has been gelded since finishing seventh in Ascot's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. and encounters six rivals in the bet365-sponsored G3 Earl of Sefton S. over nine furlongs. His chief threat is Anthony Oppenheimer's G2 Dante S. runner-up and G3 Sovereign S. victor Megallan (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who comes back off a fifth in October's G2 Prix Dollar at ParisLongchamp.
