Poker Face Takes Wildenstein In Red-Letter Day For Crisfords

Shortly after Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) stormed to G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. success at Newmarket on Saturday, it was another group victory for the training duo of Simon and Ed Crisford, as Poker Face (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) pounced in the G2 Qatar Prix Daniel Wildenstein over 1600 metres at ParisLongchamp.

In midpack from the jump as G3 Sovereign S. winner Embesto (GB) (Roaring Lion) chaired the vanguard up front with Colombier (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the 4-year-old gelding waited patiently for his call up, and, with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, pounced on the embattled longtime leader inside the 300-metre mark. At the line, the 43-10 shot was two lengths clear of the rallying 23-10 favourite, Group 3 winner and G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains second Isaac Shelby (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}). Belbek (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}), a winner of the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere last term, was a neck behind in third and he just nipped Embesto by a head for fourth.

A winner of all three of his starts at three, the Edward Ware runner was runner-up in the G3 Earl of Sefton S. in April and earned more black-type when second in a Sandown listed affair three starts later in July. Taking the Listed Pomfret S. at Pontefract at the end of that month, he triumphed in the G3 Prix Quincey at Deauville near the end of August.

“It's been an incredible two days and I'm delighted for everyone involved,” said the Crisfords' racing manager Liam Elvidge. “It's been the plan to come here for the Daniel Wildenstein with Poker Face, expecting the ground to be a little bit softer, but he's put in a helluva performance. That's his third win on the bounce after winning a listed race at Pontefract and a Group 3 at Deauville. To come here and win on Arc weekend is an amazing achievement. We will get him home to Newmarket and see how he comes out of the race before deciding whether to give him another run this year or wait for next year.”

Pedigree Notes

Bred by Rockhart Trading, the 95,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling was snapped up by Richard Frisby Bloodstock. Poker Face is one of 122 group winners worldwide for the excellent former reverse shuttle stallion Fastnet Rock, who now resides permanently at Coolmore Australia.

A full-brother to dual American stakes winner Star Devine (Ire), who was also placed twice in Grade IIIs in the US, Poker Face is followed by full-siblings born in 2020-2022–the 3-year-old filly Star Rockette (Ire), the juvenile colt Odyssey Fox (Ire) and another yearling filly, who will be consigned by Marlhill House Stud as lot 724 during the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 in October. Stars At Night, who won at three and is a half-sister to triple Group 1 winner Blue Bunting (Dynaformer), was covered by American Triple Crown winner Justify this spring.

ParisLongchamp: Can Erevann Get His Group One?

by Tom Frary
Things may not have gone to plan with Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) on Sunday, but The Aga Khan and Jean-Claude Rouget will be looking to put that experience behind him quickly as TDN Rising Star Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) takes aim at Monday's G1 Prix d'Ispahan at ParisLongchamp. Successful in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein here in October, having finished in the frame in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August, the son of the high-class Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) enjoyed the perfect sharpener when third in the G2 Prix du Muguet over a mile at Saint-Cloud at the start of the month.

Starting Point For Onesto…
This also serves as the reintroduction of fellow TDN Rising Star Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who may find this trip shy of 10 furlongs too sharp so a win is probably asking too much of the 2022 G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero and G1 Irish Champion S. runner-up. Shadwell's G2 Prix Dollar winner Anmaat (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) will provide a pointer to the G1 Prince of Wales's S. prospects of Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), having finished runner-up to Godolphin's giant in the G3 Gordon Richards S. staged at Newmarket earlier this month.

Classic Action At Cologne...
Cologne stages the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen, or German 2000 Guineas, with Yoshiro Kubota's dual Polytrack winner (Lope De Vega {Ire}) a fascinating contender for the Roger Varian stable. Disappointingly, the home defence looks weak on paper, with the market leaders all from Britain or France.

TDN Rising Star Erevann Triumphs In The Daniel Wildenstein

In the headlines for an infamous moment of pure madness on Friday afternoon, jockey Christophe Soumillon returned to the winner's enclosure aboard His Highness The Aga Khan's Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Ervedya {Fr}, by Siyouni {Fr}) after winning Saturday's G2 Qatar Prix Daniel Wildenstein at ParisLongchamp. The 'TDN Rising Star', who had earlier annexed June's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac at Chantilly, relinquished his perfect record when beaten two necks in the Aug. 14 G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville when last seen and lined up as the 7-5 pick for this one-mile test. Settled off the pace in rear until taking closer order along the false straight, he came under pressure racing alone against the far-side rail approaching the two pole and kept on strongly once taking control with 350 metres remaining to hold the late rattle of 2019 and 2020 winner The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths.

“That was the expected outcome, but you prefer when they confirm your expectations on the track,” said trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “We had no doubt he would handle the [very soft] going and Christophe Soumillon did well to go for the inside rail. He quickened nicely, he is a very good horse and should be a grand horse next year. We won't see him again this season and [the G1 Queen Anne S. at] Royal Ascot will be his first major target next year.”

Erevann is the second of four foals and lone scorer out of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix du Moulin heroine Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). His dam is a half-sister to Listed Dusseldorf Preis victrix Elennga (Fr) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and to the dam of the dual stakes-placed Ebony (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). The April-foaled homebred bay, whose second dam is G3 Prix Vanteaux runner-up Elva (Ire) (King's Best), hails from the family which includes G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club hero Erdelistan (Fr) (Lashkari {GB}) and is half to a yearling filly by Kitten's Joy and a weanling filly by Lope De Vega (Ire).
