TDN Rising Star Les Pavots Impresses In Deauville’s Prix du Calvados

'TDN Rising Star' Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never) encountered G1 Prix Morny contender Ramatuelle (Justify) when hitting the board in June's G3 Prix du Bois at Chantilly and backed up a win in last month's Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at Vichy with an impressive performance and a career high in Saturday's G2 Prix du Calvados at Deauville.

The 22-5 chance was steadied to race at the tail of the field and found a comfortable rhythm tracking all seven rivals through the early fractions. Making smooth headway from halfway, she quickened in impressive fashion when shaken up with 300 metres remaining and kept on strongly under urging in the closing stages to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths from British challenger Ornellaia (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}). Last month's G3 Prix Six Perfections victrix Laulne (Fr) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was prominent throughout and finished 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

“She is a talented filly and improving with every race,” said trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. “I had some concerns today about the [very] soft ground, but she handled it beautifully. She is in the [G1] Marcel Boussac and that is a logical next step, but we also have in mind to take her to the [GI] Breeders cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita.”

Pedigree Notes
Les Pavots, a private purchase from Coolmore, is the fifth of six foals and one of four scorers from as many runners produced by G3 Ballyogan S. third Sparrow (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself out of G3 Middleton S. victrix and G1 Oaks second All Too Beautiful (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). All Too Beautiful,  a daughter of storied matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki), is the dam of G1 Oaks, G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Yorkshire Oaks placegetter Wonder Of Wonders (Kingmambo) and the stakes-winning sire Victory Song (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Her descendants include stakes-winning G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third So Wonderful (War Front) and stakes-winning G1 Epsom Oaks third Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The March-foaled chestnut, who becomes the 32nd pattern-race winner for her sire, is a half-sister to G1 Cox Plate and G1 Tancred S. hero Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), dual stakes-winning G3 Gordon S. and G3 N E Manion Cup placegetter Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and a yearling colt by Camelot (GB).

Group Schedule Outlined for Night Of Thunder’s Ornellaia

Ornellaia (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), winner last out at Goodwood Aug. 3, will target a series of group tests over the coming weeks, according to Tom Pennington, racing and operations manager for Amo Racing. The Dominic Ffrench Davis-trained filly is slated to make her first foray into group company Saturday in the G2 Prix du Calvados at Deauville.

Prior to her seven-furlong score, the 2-year-old finished third behind Sacred Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})–subsequent G3 Princess Margaret S. winner–in a six-furlong Newmarket maiden July 13.

“We went to Newmarket on debut knowing she would benefit from the experience and we were encouraged when the winner went on to win the Princess Margaret,” said Pennington. “I was a bit disappointed to see the Godolphin filly that finished second [Dubai Treasure {Ire}, by Exceed and Excel {Aus}] get beat at Yarmouth [Aug. 9], but we knew our filly had a good deal of ability. We went to Goodwood pretty confident that she would get the job done at seven furlongs being by Night Of Thunder and with there being some cut in the ground. She went and did it nicely.”

As for her upcoming itinerary, he added, “She's in the Prix du Calvados at Deauville and that is on the radar at the minute, but she's also in a lot of nice races. She's in the [G1] Moyglare Stud S. [Curragh, Sept.  10], she could go to the [G3] Prestige [Fillies' S.] at Goodwood [Aug. 26] at the end of the month. She's potentially a very nice filly who we think is probably group class.”

Profitable’s Wed Strikes For Prix du Calvados Triumph

Mohammed Al Shahi's 2-year-old filly Wed (Fr) (Profitable {Ire}–Eaton Street {GB}, by Discreet Cat) snagged two of three prior outings and continued on an upward trajectory with a decisive success in Saturday's G2 Prix du Calvados at Deauville. The Maurizio Guarnieri trainee debuted with a June 17 win at La Teste de Buch before running second over the same seven-furlong strip back there the following month and lined up for her first black-type start returning off an impressive 4 1/2-length tally at Dax last week. The 13-2 chance was handily placed in sixth after the opening exchanges of this third straight attempt at the seven-furlong distance. Taking closer order once past halfway, she was ridden to launch her challenge passing the quarter-mile marker and extended clear under continued urging inside the final furlong to hit the line with a two-length advantage from Sparkling Beauty (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Deauville Beckons Dandalla

Group winner Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})’s next target will be either the G1 Prix Morny on Aug. 23 or the G2 Prix du Calvados the day prior, both at Deauville in France. Unbeaten in three starts, including the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot on June 19 and the July 10 G2 Dutchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket, the Nick Bradley Racing silksbearer is trained by Karl Burke.

“She’s in the two races, but if she goes anywhere it will be the Morny,” said Burke. “We just put her in the other one in case it looked a very weak race, or we weren’t 100% happy going to the Morny. So it’s one or the other–she can’t do both–but we’re very happy with her.

“Her form couldn’t look any stronger–with Nick’s other filly Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) winning since, and I believe she’ll run in the Group 2. Even the third from Newmarket [Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}] has won a group race since.”
