Frankel’s Jannah Rose Takes The Saint-Alary

Sent off the 8-5 favourite for a competitive renewal of ParisLongchamp's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary, Al Shira'aa Farms' Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) duly affirmed her abundant quality with a success that was as smooth as it gets in these demanding conditions. Switched off early by Christophe Soumillon, the unbeaten G3 Prix Vanteaux winner was coaxed to the front 300 metres from the line and asserted for a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), who in turn avenged her G3 Prix Cleopatre defeat by Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a short head.

“She is a top filly,” trainer Carlos Laffon Parias said of the €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase. “To win that group 3 last time out on only her second start was already an accomplishment and I knew she would have no problem staying an extra furlong. She looked the winner two out and I had some thoughts earlier in the week to run her in the Pouliches, but this race looked weaker and obviously the winner of the Guineas is a very good one. If the Guineas winner runs in the Diane, we will meet her there and it will be a sensational Classic. She is learning and is more relaxed–she is gaining experience and this will only make her stronger.”

Pedigree Notes
Jannah Rose is a half-sister to the G2 Lanwades Stud S. winner Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) out of the unraced Sophie Germain, who is also responsible for the listed-placed Silver Spear (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). A daughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Hydrion (Critique) from the family of the GI Breeders' Futurity hero and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie (Smart Strike) and the GI Personal Ensign H. heroine Pompeii (Broad Brush), she also has a 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) who was bought by David Redvers for €280,000 at last year's Goffs Orby.

American Pharoah’s Above the Curve Best In The Saint-Alary

Second best in the May 4 Listed Cheshire Oaks, TDN Rising Star Above the Curve (American Pharoah) made sure she was front and centre where it mattered in Sunday's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp. Sent up to track the steady pace by Ryan Moore in a close second, the 7-5 favourite was committed with 300 metres remaining and stayed on to deny Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by a length, with Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) the same margin away in third. “They went steady and that was against her–it turned into a sprint, she's still babyish and is still learning and there is plenty to come,” Moore said of the Joseph O'Brien-trained winner.

Above the Curve, who had earned TDN Rising Star status at the expense of Thoughts of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a maiden over this trip at Leopardstown Apr. 6 before losing out to that rival on easier ground tackling an extended 11 furlongs at Chester, could be heading back to Ireland for next start according to Hermine Bastide, representing Coolmore. “She has entries in all the big fillies' races including the Prix de Royallieu and the Prix de Diane, but her next race is likely to be the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh,” he said. “She is a lovely filly and Joseph is delighted with the performance. Maybe she will be bred to St Mark's Basilica in the future. She is lightly-raced and there is probably more room for improvement, she has a lovely temperament and ticks all the boxes.”

Trainer Yann Lerner said of Queen Trezy, “She is so cold it's unbelievable. We fitted her with sheepskins to motivate her, but still she was caught for speed and doing the bare minimum. On the other hand, it is sometimes an advantage for a horse to be so relaxed and it helps on big occasions when you have to deal with the pressure. There is no doubt that a mile and a half will be her game, but I think we will try the Prix de Diane first.”

Above the Curve's dam is an unraced daughter of the revered Mariah's Storm (Rahy), which makes her a half-sibling to Giant's Causeway. Already responsible for the G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 Weld Park S. third Thinking of You, Fabulous is a half to the “Iron Horse's” G2 Cherry Hinton S.-winning sister You'resothrilling which links her to the Galileo clan of Gleneagles (Ire), Happily (Ire), Joan of Arc (Ire) and Marvellous (Ire). Also connected to that sire's G1 Irish Champion S.-winning sire Decorated Knight (GB), she has been bred to Justify for the past three seasons, with 2-year-old and yearling fillies followed by a colt foal.

Arc Hero Torquator Tasso Returns At Baden-Baden

The last time the Baden-Baden faithful had an eyeful of Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), the Gestut Auenquelle flagbearer was upstaging the G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) in the picturesque venue's flagship G1 Grosser Preis von Baden. While that was notable enough at the time, what came next as he marauded among the more tantalising reputations assembled for the Arc assured him legendary status in the nation that had been forced to wait nearly half  a century for Star Appeal's follow-up act. Racing proved there it is no respecter of rank and so it is here in Sunday's G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft as the Marcel Weiss-trained 5-year-old starts all over again. Winning the Arc ensures a certain aura, but it does not confer mythical powers and the combination of a four-pound penalty and potential rustiness means there is not as much between him and one or two of these including Stall Nizza's Deutsches Derby runner-up Alter Adler (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}).

The Way Back

At ParisLongchamp, France's very own version of Torquator Tasso, Le Haras de la Gousserie and Guy Pariente's Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), runs in the feature G1 Prix d'Ispahan which probably because of its proximity to Royal Ascot has failed to draw the strength in depth expected of a top-level contest staged here. First advertising his wares when a surprise fifth in the German raider's Arc, the chestnut embarked upon Ascot to top that effort by carrying off the centrepiece G1 QIPCO Champion S. but it is safe to say that things have not been straightforward since. Beaten in three subsequent efforts, he has ground to make up on the re-opposing Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}), who had him a place behind when runner-up in the G1 Prix Ganay here at the start of the month.

All In Place

Ballylinch Stud have already had a big week thanks to Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) and the Co. Kilkenny establishment could cap it with the Andre Fabre-trained Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary. Owned in equal partnership with Al Shaqab Racing, the impressive Apr. 22 G3 Prix Cleopatre winner faces unknown quantities in the May 4 Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Above the Curve (American Pharoah) and Ecurie Melanie's unbeaten Rouget project Sippinsoda (Fr) (War Front). She misses a date with Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) after that 1000 Guineas runner-up was forced to turn back due to heavy delays at the English Port of Dover. In a fascinating G3 Prix du Palais-Royal, Jean-Claude Seroul's G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero Marianafoot (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) is tackled by Everest Racing, Barbara Keller and David Redvers's Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) who seeks to bury the memory of a deflating effort when down the field in the 1000 Guineas at the start of the month.

Travel Issues Derail Prosperous Voyage’s Saint-Alary Bid

Ralph Beckett trainee Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) has been withdrawn from Sunday's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary due to travel issues en route to France. Second in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas on May 1, the filly and Beckett's staff are stranded in Dover. The market leader for the 10-furlong contest prior to her defection, the race is now wide open and sees Charlie Appleby and Godolphin hunting for their second edition of the race with Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Appleby saddled Sobetsu (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to win in 2017.
