Group 1 Winner In Swoop to Stand Under Coolmore NH Banner

German Derby winner In Swoop (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}–Iota {Ger}, by Tiger Hill {Ire}), who was runner-up in the 2020 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, will stand under the Coolmore National Hunt banner in Ireland, the stud announced on Thursday. A fee will be announced later.

“In Swoop is the 19th German Derby winner owned and bred by the Von Ullmann family who also bred and raced both his German Derby-winning sire and German Oaks-winning dam,” said Coolmore's Joe Hernon who negotiated the purchase. “He's a striking horse from one of Europe's leading farms and was rated the best 3-year-old of his generation over a mile and a half. The Von Ullmann family also provided us with Getaway (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) who has proven a resounding success with Irish breeders and we are very grateful to them.”

Bred by the Von Ullmann Family and raced in their Gestut Schlenderhan colours, the bay was third in the G2 Prix Greffulhe in only his second start and won the 2020 G1 Deutsches Derby on his third appearance last July. In Swoop was second again in September, this time in the rescheduled G1 Grand Prix de Paris before just missing in the Arc last October.

The Francis-Henri Graffard trainee made his 4-year-old bow in April, with a second in a ParisLongchamp listed affair, before adding the G3 Prix d'Hedouville and G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly in quick succession in May and June. His final race was a fourth in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. In Swoop was retired with a tendon injury earlier this month and had been preparing for another Arc tilt.

The eighth foal of German Oaks heroine Iota, In Swoop is a full-brother to G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern victor Ito (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and a half to both the New Zealand Group 3 winner Igraine (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Iniciar (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}).

Tarnawa Greenlighted For Irish Champion

Three-time Group 1 winner Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), who won the G3 Ballyroan S. at Leopardstown on Aug. 5, will make her next start in the Sept. 11 G1 Irish Champion S., trainer Dermot Weld revealed to Racing Post on Tuesday.

A winner of last year's G1 Prix Vermeille, G1 Prix de l'Opera and the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, the chestnut has been in good order since her Ballyroan appearance. After the Irish Champion, the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 3 is High Highness The Aga Khan homebred's long-term goal.

“A decision has been made and Tarnawa is will have her next start in the Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown,” Weld told the Racing Post. “Colin Keane will ride her. Once it's good ground, that's where she will go. She will run in the Irish Champion S. and then, all being well, she will head into the Arc.”

He added, “The standard of the top horses is exceptional and the ratings prove that. It's going to be an exciting race [the Irish Champion], as will the Arc, and hopefully Tarnawa can continue to progress.”

Fall Plans Revealed For Shadwell Stars

Shadwell group winners Raabihah (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) are targetting the Oct. 3 G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and Sept. 5 G1 Prix du Moulin, respectively, Shadwell Racing Manager Angus Gold revealed on Monday.

A 4-year-old filly, Raabihah was fifth in the 2020 Arc after taking the G3 Prix de Psyche last August and running second in the Sept. 13 G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille. Prior to her victory in Sunday's G2 Prix de Pomone, the chestnut was second thrice as the favourite in the May 2 G3 Prix Allez France Longines, the May 26 G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud and in the Listed Prix du Pays d'Auge at Clairefontaine on Aug. 1. She is also a possible for the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille on Sept. 12.

“I'd love to think we can have another crack at the Arc–that was the reason she was kept in training,” said Gold. “She got beat a couple of times earlier this season. But as (trainer) Jean-Claude (Rouget) said to me yesterday, sometimes with these fillies who have a relatively hard time at three–she was racing at the top table–it can just take them a while to get back to that level.

“We gave her a break at the stud, and it's just taken her three runs to get back up to speed. The distance yesterday is exactly what she should be running over on pedigree.

“It was great to get her back on track, and I don't see any reason why she wouldn't go for the Arc. Jean-Claude just wants to see how she comes out of it first before deciding whether she runs in the Vermeille first or not.”

Undefeated G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. hero Baaeed is in good form for trainer William Haggas. A half-brother to triple Group 3 winner Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the colt won a maiden at Leicester on June 7 and doubled up in a Newmarket novice on June 19. Given a first taste of stakes company on July 8, he captured the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. over a mile at HQ by four lengths. His winning margin in the Bonhams Thoroughbred S. was 6 ½ lengths, also at a mile at Goodwood.

“At the moment we are probably going to the Prix du Moulin, that was the latest from the last conversation I had with Sheikha Hissa and William Haggas,” Gold said of Baaeed. “So the number one plan is to go to the Moulin if all is well.

“Obviously before the horse had run it would have been a silly thing to say this is what he would do, but he was a well-bred horse going into it. It just took him a bit of time to come to himself.

“What probably has surprised me is the speed he's shown–maybe it's just class. Before he'd ever ran I'd have thought he was probably going to be a mile-and-a-quarter to mile-and-a-half horse, so to see him doing all this over a mile is hugely encouraging.

“It's a not problem to have but he's showing too much speed, if that makes sense. He's a very exciting horse so we'll see if he can take the next step up.”

German Derby Hero In Swoop Retired With Tendon Injury

German champion In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}–Iota {Ger}, by Tiger Hill {Ire}), a winner of the 2020 G1 Deutsches Derby, has been retired from racing with a tendon injury, Equidia reported on Monday. Stud plans are pending for the Francis-Henri Graffard trainee.

The Gestut Schlenderhan colourbearer kicked off his career with a win at Lyon Parilly in May of his 3-year-old year and was third in the G2 Prix Greffulhe last June before his German Derby score. Second to Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp in September, the Stall Ullmann-bred filled that spot again in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 4. His 4-year-old bow was a second in a French listed race, before adding the G3 Prix d'Hedouville and G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly to his ledger. He was a last out fourth in the July 4 G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. In Swoop, who had been pointing toward another Arc attempt, retires with a mark of 9-4-3-1 and $1,654,289 in earnings.

In Swoop is the eighth foal of his dam, who scored her biggest victory in the 2005 G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks). Besides In Swoop, she has already produced German champion and G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern victor Ito (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), the New Zealand Group 3 winner Igraine (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Iniciar (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}).

Although In Swoop's second dam was unraced, besides Iota, Iora (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}) had the German champion and Group 1 placed Ioannina (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and German Group 3 winner Illo (Ger) (Tertullian) to her credit.
