Alkumait Enters Dewhurst Picture

Group 2 winner Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) is likely for the G1 Dewhurst S. on Oct. 10, but would need to be supplemented. A winner at Goodwood at second asking on July 28, the Shadwell colourbearer won the G2 Mill Reef S. by 3/4 of a length at Newbury on Sept. 19.

“We were absolutely thrilled with him,” said Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager Angus Gold of the Marcus Tregoning trainee. “He showed a really nice turn of foot and won very nicely. The Mill Reef/Middle Park double has never really worked out for us, so we were never going to go down that route.

“His action would suggest he prefers top of the ground. That’s not to say he wouldn’t handle cut in the ground, but I certainly don’t think he would want it heavy.

“Marcus would like to run Alkumait again this year–and as he said on Saturday, the only race for him really is the Dewhurst, which we didn’t enter him for because he’d only won a maiden at that stage.

“We’ll see how the land lies. We also have [G2 Champagne S. runner-up] Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal) as a possible for the Dewhurst–I think he was undone by his inexperience as much as anything at Doncaster.

“There would be a question mark over the trip for Alkumait–but if he settled well, like he did on Saturday, he’d give himself a chance. Seven furlongs at Newmarket is a different test to six at Newbury, so we’ll see.

“It wouldn’t be the end of the world if he didn’t run again this year, [but] the Dewhurst is the best 2-year-old race in England, so if you can give yourself a better chance of winning it, maybe you should. “

Thunder Moon Possible for Dewhurst

Group 1 winner Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who won the G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. at The Curragh on Sunday for Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez, is under consideration for the G1 Dewhurst S. on Oct. 10, trainer Joseph O’Brien revealed on Monday. The bay graduated at first asking for breeder Anne Marie O’Brien at The Curragh on Aug. 9, before being purchased privately.

“We were very happy with him,” said O’Brien of the ‘TDN Rising Star’. “It was a bit of a messy race, but he showed a great turn of foot to go away and win well. We did supplement him, so we were hopeful he’d run a nice race, but I suppose I was surprised by the manner of his victory.”

“If he was to run again this year, the Dewhurst would probably be the race for him, but we’ll see how he comes out of the race on Sunday and a lot will depend on the ground as well. The Breeders’ Cup [in November] is there as an option as well, but that wouldn’t be on my radar at the moment. He’s an exciting colt.”

O’Brien also sent out ‘Rising Star’ Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) to run second in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. to Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), trained by his brother Donnacha. A start on Champions Day in the G1 Fillies’ Mile or the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc Day or a Breeders’ Cup appearance in November are all on the table at the moment for the John Oxley silkbearer. Her biggest win to date was the G2 Debutante S. on Aug. 22, beating the aforementioned Shale.

“Pretty Gorgeous ran a great race,” said O’Brien. “I think the two of them [Pretty Gorgeous and Shale] are very good fillies and whichever one of them gets the rub of the green on the day might come out on top.

“We’ll see how our filly comes out of it, but we have the option of the Fillies’ Mile or the Prix Marcel Boussac and there’s also the Breeders’ Cup. We’ll see how we go, but I’d say she probably just wants one more run this year, with Newmarket and France being the likeliest options.”

Dewhurst Next Port of Call for Etonian

Undefeated G3 Solario S. hero Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) is aiming for the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket on Oct. 10. Trained by Richard Hannon, the bay colt got off the mark on debut at Sandown on July 23 and followed up with a 1 1/4-length win in the Solario there on Aug. 23.

“The thought at the moment is to go for the Dewhurst,” said owner Julie Wood. “It is lovely to have a horse capable of performing at this level again as it has been a while. He keeps it all for his races, but he is a real trier. We thought he was nice straight away, but until they get to the track you never know, and he has now done it twice now. Obviously we would like to finish off this season as good as we can, but the dream is the G1 2000 Guineas next year. He is a lovely horse to look forward to.”
