Starspangledbanner’s Aristia Wins The Romanet

There was no fairytale at Deauville on Sunday as Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) failed to fire on her European bow in the G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet won from the front by Elizabeth “Bunny” Roberts's Aristia (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Aristia had found only Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) too strong in the G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood last time July 28 and that form saw to it that the Richard Hannon trainee traded at only 4-1 as Sean Levey sought to dictate to suit. Kept company by Rosscarbery (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) throughout, the bay ultimately had too much pace where it counted and found the line a neck ahead of that rival, with another 1 1/4 lengths back to Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) in third. The 12-5 favourite Verry Elleegant went to post with positive vibes surrounding her, but was detached early and failed to get out of last place at any stage.

“It's amazing. Winning a Group 1 race here in France is hard to achieve–we've had many places, including an hour ago, but she is a very brave and tough filly,” Hannon said. “She can dictate the pace or come from behind, but from the one draw, Sean did well to let her go on. She's had her ups and downs, but she came in her coat very late in the season and that is why she is doing real well only now. She is a genuine filly. Jamie Magee had her for a period over the winter and he has done an excellent job and deserves a mention. The Opera on Arc day is a possibility, but also the Fillies' and Mares' race on Champions day.”

Roberts, president of Jersey's race club and sister of Robert Barnett whose Time Charter (Ire) achieved renown in the '80s, has had offers to refuse along the way for the winner, whose career began with a win at 20-1 at Newbury last April. Third in that track's Listed Haras De Bouquetot Fillies' Trial before upsetting Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in York's Listed Lyric Fillies' S. either side of an eighth in the G2 Ribblesdale S., she rounded off her 2021 campaign with a below-par ninth in the G2 Prix de la Nonette here 12 months ago. Returning to be second in the G2 Middleton Fillies' S. back at York May 12, she threw in another bad one when ninth in Royal Ascot's Listed Wolferton S. June 14 before taking it to a new level in the Nassau and this prize which often falls to an improver.

Pedigree Notes:

Aristia's dam Aloisi (GB) (Kalanisi {Ire}), who also produced the Australian stakes winner Glorious Sinndar {Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}), is a daughter of the Listed Prix Rose de Mai winner and G3 Prix Penelope-placed Bellona (Ire) (Bering {GB}). She is in turn responsible for Es Que (GB) (Inchinor {GB}), whose four stakes winners are headed by the G1 Hong Kong Vase hero Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}) and the G2 Lennox S.-winning sire Es Que Love (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). The third dam is the G3 Prix de Royaumont scorer Bellarida (Fr) (Bellypha {Ire}), whose G3 Prix de Flore-winning daughter In Clover (GB), also by Inchinor, produced a trio of top-level winners in Dansili's We Are (Ire) and With You (GB) and Frankel's Call The Wind (GB). Aloisi's 2-year-old colt by Aclaim (Ire) was a 52,000gns purchase by Rabbah Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale, while she also has a yearling colt by Bungle Inthejungle (GB) due to sell at the upcoming Goffs Orby and a filly foal by Gregorian (Ire).

Olympic Glory’s Grand Glory Upsets The Romanet

Deauville's G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet has a habit of producing shock winners and there was another to add to the list on Sunday as Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) got up late to deny last year's heroine Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in a thriller. Last seen enjoying a confidence-boosting success in the July 21 G3 Grand Prix de Vichy, Albert Frassetto, John d'Amato and Mike Pietrangelo's G3 Prix de Flore and Listed Prix Zarkava winner who was third in the 2019 G1 Prix de Diane was anchored in rear early by Cristian Demuro. Making her move wide on the home turn, the 23-1 shot needed all of the straight to get past the reigning GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf title-holder but managed it on the line to prevail by a short head, with the G1 Pretty Polly S. scorer Thundering Nights (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. “This is a dream really–these races personally I used to watch on TV and they were not for me, but here I am winning a group 1 in Deauville, it's such a thrill,” trainer Gianluca Bietolini said. “I knew I had the filly in great form and she was doing very well after Vichy with a much less complicated season this year than last. We made the right choices for her and she has come through this season more straightforwardly, so I felt it was a really good time to try her again in a group 1 race.”

Much water has flown under the bridge since Grand Glory was beaten a head and half a length when making the frame in the 2019 Diane and despite maintaining an admirable level of consistency, few would have predicted that the bay would make the requisite jump required to get to this esteemed level. Her efforts last season included the aforementioned wins in ParisLongchamp's Prix Zarkava and Saint-Cloud's Prix de Flore, a second to Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Corrida staged at Lyon-Parilly and a third behind Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) in the 12 1/2-furlong G2 Prix de Pomone here. Third to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) on her comeback in the 10-furlong G3 Prix Exbury on heavy ground back at Saint-Cloud Mar. 21, she was uncharacteristically disappointing when last of six in the G3 Prix Allez France at ParisLongchamp May 2 before finishing third in the latter venue's G3 La Coupe again over this trip June 13.

Buoyed by her success at Vichy, Grand Glory showed what a sudden uptick in self-belief can do as she mastered a strong field of fillies and mares including the ultimately disappointing 9-5 favourite Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) without a hint of fluke. Bietolini is considering the G1 Prix de l'Opera de Longchamp now Oct. 3. “It looks to me that she is back to the level of her Diane run as a 3-year-old, but she's not in the Arc and I wouldn't want to go there anyway,” he said. “The Opera is enough for us and maybe we'll have another great day there. She'll head to the farm after that.” James Fanshawe said of the runner-up, “She's run a great race and was beaten narrowly, but that's the game–you win and you lose so hats off to the winner. I'm very happy that she's come back to her best after Goodwood and we'll take it race-by-race with the plan to come back for the Opera and then go to the Breeders' Cup like last year.”

Grand Glory's dam Madonna Lily (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}), whose final foal is the useful 4-year-old gelding Bois d'Argent (GB) (Toronado {Ire}), is a daughter of the listed-placed Maria de La Luz (GB) (Machiavellian) who produced the GII Canadian S. winner Minakshi (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). She is also the second dam of the Scandinavian juvenile champion and Listed Meydan Classic-placed Irish Trilogy (Ire) (Gregorian {Ire}) hailing from the family of the Australian group 1-winning mother and daughter Arapaho Miss (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) and the Preakness S. hero and champion sire Tom Rolfe (Ribot {GB}).

Wootton Bassett’s Audarya In Romanet Upset

There was a surprise in store in Sunday’s G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet as the James Fanshawe-trained Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) took a significant jump in class to provide her trainer with a third renewal of this 10-furlong Deauville feature since 2014. Coming off a Newcastle handicap win over this trip Aug. 2, the 48-1 shot tracked the pace travelling easily and when committed by Ioritz Mendizabal grabbed the advantage before the furlong pole. Challenged by Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) all the way to the line, the bay who sports the silks of Alison Swinburn held her at bay to score by a neck, with four lengths back to Romanciere (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) in third. “I thought I was riding for a place, but this is a nice bonus,” Mendizabal admitted. “The trainer asked me to get a good position, but more importantly to get her to relax. She wasn’t supposed to like the ground, but she was very comfortable and travelled very well on it. I’m not sure how she won like that and it’s a nice story that Francois Doumen bred her, as I know him very well.”

Having saddled Ribbons (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) to win this six years ago and Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) to follow up two years later, it is safe to say that the Newmarket-based handler has previous form where this race is concerned but it took a leap of the imagination to suggest that Audarya could add to his tally. No great shakes at three, she took four starts to break her maiden and when she did it came at lowly Redcar in June before winning a mile Goodwood handicap and finishing runner-up in the Listed Prix Coronation at Saint-Cloud in two of her remaining outings last term. Returning to finish an encouraging eighth behind this race’s 7-10 favourite Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in Kempton’s Listed Snowdrop Fillies’ S. over a mile June 3, she backtracked when sixth in the Listed Pipalong S. also at that trip at Pontefract July 7 before enjoying a class drop to regain confidence on Newcastle’s Tapeta.

With that performance confirming her stamina, Audarya was placed prominently as Bolleville (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) cut out the fractions with Romanciere acting as her lead. With the latter left in front upon straightening for home, she had the ideal target and quickly took her measure dragging Ambition with her approaching the furlong marker. Nazeef was paddling at this point and the first two had the race between them as they stayed on strongly to draw away from the remainder.

Audarya’s dam Green Bananas (Fr) (Green Tune) was a modest performer over middle distances for the Francois Doumen stable and did race at this meeting, finishing runner-up in a 12 1/2-furlong handicap in 2013. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix Minerve and G3 Prix d’Aumale-placed Anabaa Republic (Fr) (Anabaa). Things get more interesting under the fourth dam Jimka (Fr) (Jim French), whose son Jim and Tonic (Fr) (Double Bed {Fr}) proved one of the Doumens’ finest flat performers when taking the G1 Hong Kong Cup, G2 Dubai Duty Free and G2 Hong Kong International Bowl as well as a clutch of group 3 contests in his native France. Jim and Tonic’s full-sister Jimkana (Fr) was responsible for Mauralakana (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}), who captured the GI Beverly D. S., GII New York S. and GII Sheepshead Bay H., and also the dual listed scorer and G3 Prix de la Grotte runner-up Petit Calva (Fr) (Desert King {Ire}).

Campanelle Bids for Prix Morny Glory

Having conquered Royal Ascot, Stonestreet Stables’ Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) has dead aim at Sunday’s G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville. Kept company by Frankie Dettori after the Italian was denied the chance to ride at York this week due to new quarantine measures, the June 20 G2 Queen Mary S. winner has pole position in the six-furlong test after Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) boosted that form on the Knavesmire on Thursday. Already successful here with the Queen Mary heroine Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) in 2016, having garnered the race with another Royal Ascot scorer No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) three years before, Wesley Ward is hoping for a rare treble and said, “She’s doing great. She’s been working real good–just cruising up and doing things nicely. I hope she’s got a good chance, hopefully the ground won’t be too soft. It’s great Frankie has stayed in France for the week so he can ride. He must fancy her chances, I guess, and it’s always good to have Frankie in your corner.”

Campanelle meets one of the most talented of the precocious colts around in The Queen’s Tactical (GB) (Toronado {Ire}), who took the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot June 17 before following up in rain-eased ground in the G2 July S. at Newmarket July 9. His owner-breeder’s racing manager John Warren said, “Tactical left Kingsclere on Friday morning, with Andrew [Balding] reporting that he couldn’t be happier with the horse. He has been aimed at this Group 1 since winning the July S. and, up to this point, everything is going to plan. We are very hopeful he remains on target to give the Queen great pleasure with this cracking homebred.”

Marie McCartan’s Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) is the third winner on show from the Royal meeting, having shook Berkshire with a 150-1 success in the June 20 G2 Coventry S. Trainer Clive Cox is looking for him to show that was no fluke. “I’m very pleased with him. Obviously his Coventry success was very pleasing and we’ve had a nice healthy time in between,” he said.  “We had an entry in the Papin. He wasn’t quite right for that and I’m pleased he’s in very good order and he’s heading over to France on Sunday. He won’t mind getting his toe in.”

In a renewal with the potential to be dominated by the foreign contingent, John Dance’s impressive July 17 Haydock novice winner Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is a fascinating contender and his owner commented, “We’ve only ever really done this with Laurens–who went from novice to group company also at Deauville–so to be doing this again and going two rungs higher, it feels very exciting but also incredibly scary at the same time. We were looking at the races we were in and we just felt this was an opportunity. Richard [Fahey] obviously really likes the horse and felt that we should shoot for the stars.”

Mick Channon saddles the unbeaten Cairn Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who has vital experience of the course and distance having already tackled the Aug. 2 G3 Prix de Cabourg and his trainer said, “He knows how to win, which is always a good thing. He’s always been a good horse, but it is a good race. He’s won at the track before, so we’ll see how we get on.”

Perhaps the main contender for France is Alain Jathiere, Alain Chopard and Guy Pariente’s unbeaten Livachope (Fr) (Goken {Fr}), but he has stamina to prove stepping up from five furlongs for the first time having taken ParisLongchamp’s G3 Prix du Bois July 2.

Supporting the Morny is the 10-furlong G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet, with Dettori teaming up with Shadwell’s Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who followed wins over a mile in the June 16 G2 Duke of Cambridge S. and July 10 G1 Falmouth S. with a third placing over this trip in Goodwood’s G1 Nassau S. July 30. Deep ground is an unknown, but it was soft at Newmarket in the Falmouth and John Gosden’s son Thady is at least confident of her stamina. “She’s in good form and this looks the obvious race,” he said. “I’d say you can be fairly confident that she stays 10 furlongs.”

Joseph O’Brien’s July 23 Listed Silver S. winner Bolleville (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) returns to France, having been previously trained by Pascal Bary, while Alain de Royer-Dupre supplies The Aga Khan’s July 19 Listed Prix de la Pepiniere scorer Dariyma (Fr) (City Zip) and James Rowsell and Steve Ashley’s Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) tries her hand following her career-best win in the G2 Prix Corrida at Lyon-Parilly June 6.

George Strawbridge’s Call the Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is the star turn in the G2 Darley Prix Kergorlay, while the G2 Darley Prix de Pomone sees Frankie partner the Corrida runner-up Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) for the Gianluca Bietolini stable as she bids to confirm the form of that race with the third-placed Spirit of Nelson (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}), who has subsequently won the July 22 G3 Grand Prix de Vichy.

At Sandown, the G3 Atalanta S. sees ‘TDN Rising Star’ Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) reappear after a break having finished third in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 20. Also third in the G1 1000 Guineas, the G1 Fillies’ Mile heroine does not have far to go to get back to her prime. “She’s run two very good races in fairness, to be third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation,” Teddy Grimthorpe commented. “It appeared afterwards that she had a sinus infection and an infected tooth, so we’ve let her recover from those and had them sorted out. She’s been in good form since and even though she hasn’t won, you could argue that she still sets the standard.”

Her rivals include the Falmouth runner-up Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) from the Richard Hannon stable, which also supplies the likely favourite for the G3 Betway Solario S. as the impressive July 23 course-and-distance scorer Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}).

Naas’s card features the G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Stanerra S., in which The Aga Khan’s Kastasa (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) can continue her ascent up the ranks among the country’s stayers following her successful seasonal return in Gowran Park’s Listed Vintage Tipple S. over this 14-furlong trip July 25. Also on the fixture is the Irish EBF Ballyhane S., a €320,000 median auction race for 2-year-olds whose sires had a median of no more than €75,000 last year. Turned out quickly having run second in Thursday’s £180,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling S. at York, Russell Jones’s Devious Company (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) who was also runner-up in Newmarket’s G2 Superlative S. July 11 and the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood July 28 meets Johnny Murtagh’s Measure of Magic (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), who was third in this track’s Listed Marwell S. last time. The form of that five-furlong Aug. 3 contest looks stronger now that the winner Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) has won the G2 Lowther S. and the runner-up Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) has taken the Listed Curragh S.
