Cazoo Derby Festival and Coral-Eclipse Day Receive Prize Money Boosts

The Cazoo Derby Festival on June 4-5 and Coral-Eclipse Day on July 3 both received an increase in prize money, The Jockey Club announced on Tuesday. Limited spectators returning to racecourses, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, was cited for the increases.

Held at Epsom Downs Racecourse, the Cazoo Derby Festival's purses were increased 12% across the 11 non-Group 1 races. None of the races over the two-day stand will be run for less than £40,000 and no handicaps will be worth less than £50,000. The Cazoo Derby is still worth £1,125,000, the G1 Cazoo Oaks will keep its purse of £375,000 and the G1 Coronation Cup S. has an unchanged prize money of £315,000.

At Sandown Park, prize money has been raised 18% to £900,000 for the entire card. The G1 Coral-Eclipse, part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, has an increased purse of £600,000, and the Coral Charge H. is now worth £75,000, an increase of £25,000. In addition, two races normally run the day prior to Coral-Eclipse Day have been moved to July 3-the £40,000 Coral Day H. and the £25,000 coral.co.uk H.

Andrew Cooper, Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs and Sandown Park, said: “It has been a difficult time for us at The Jockey Club, as it has been for everyone, and in several ways that remains the case. Racegoers generate around 50% of our revenues and so with them away from our 15 racecourses for so long our finances have been significantly impacted and remain so as the pandemic continues.

“However, now we are starting to be allowed a very limited number of spectators back, we are immediately taking the opportunity to boost prize money. Therefore I am pleased to confirm we are able to increase the value of the non-Group 1 races across both days of The Cazoo Derby Festival by 12% and with the prospect of more spectators at Sandown Park, we're committing to boost prize money for Coral-Eclipse Day by 18% above currently advertised values.

“Owners who put so much into the sport have been incredibly patient during the pandemic and this period of huge uncertainty. All of us at The Jockey Club are keen that as soon as the financial picture improves we see that reflected in prize money funding, which is always a top priority at Jockey Club Racecourses.”

Enable One of Eight in Vintage Coral-Eclipse

Juddmonte’s Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is set for a stern test on her eagerly-awaited return to the track on Sunday, with Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) one of her key rivals in an eight-strong entry for the G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner is set to reappear for the first time since she lost her 12-race unbeaten sequence when runner-up to Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in pursuit of her hat-trick in Paris last October.

John Gosden’s brilliant mare will be defending her Sandown crown, having begun her campaign last summer with an odds-on victory in the Eclipse. At six, she is due to face a tough challenger in Charlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath–a year her junior and a dual winner since finishing only 10th of 12 at ParisLongchamp last October. Ghaiyyath made virtually all for emphatic victories in the G3 Dubai Millennium S. at Meydan and then the re-routed G1 Coronation Cup at Newmarket earlier this month. William Buick is set to team up with the Dubawi horse again and he is anticipating a thorough test for his mount.

Buick said, “It is obviously a tough race, but he is a horse I’m looking forward to riding again as he was great at Newmarket last time in the Coronation Cup. It looks like a real highlight, but that is the Eclipse for you. It has been billed as that before and it is a great race. I know it is only a small field, but it is a very select field and there are world champions in there. This could be the race of the season.”

Among Ghaiyyath and Enable’s potential opponents at Sandown are the mare’s stablemate Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), an impressive winner of the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. at Royal Ascot. Adding further intrigue is the Japanese mare Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB), winner of the G1 Nassau S. last season. Aidan O’Brien’s chief hope is last year’s G1 Juddmonte International winner Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who was below-par at Ascot on his reappearance, and he may be joined by stablemate Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Regal Reality (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}) complete the field.

Eclipse Remains Enable’s Target

The G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown remains the most likely comeback target for superstar mare Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The two-time G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine was just denied in her bid for an historic third consecutive victory in the ParisLongchamp showpiece at the end of last season. Less than a fortnight later, Enable’s owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah delighted racing fans by confirming his charge would stay in training as a 6-year-old–with a return to Paris in the autumn top of the agenda. Connections decided against an appearance at Royal Ascot, but the owner’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe reports the John Gosden-trained mare to be firmly on course for the Eclipse on July 5 following a pleasing workout under Frankie Dettori last week.

“It’s been a gradual build-up–she’s a 6-year-old mare, so I don’t think John wants to do anything too quickly,” Grimthorpe told Sky Sports Racing. “She’s always told us when she’s ready to go, rather than the other way round. She’s had a couple of good works on the Limekilns on the Round Gallop–nothing too strenuous, but Frankie [Dettori] sat on her on Friday, and I think was very happy with her.”

Enable won the Eclipse, Ascot’s G1 King George and the G1 Yorkshire Oaks en route to the Arc last year–and a similar campaign may be in the offing.

Grimthorpe added, “She’s coming [to hand]. I think Prince Khalid is happy that we go to the Eclipse. She’s been in good form. I think it’s fair to say she will build-up towards the Arc. How she gets there will be up to her and John. I imagine it will be a fairly similar pattern [to last year]–there are only so many races that fall at the right time for her to get to ParisLongchamp. The Arc is the main target, and we’ll be guided by that.”
