More Commonwealth Clues on Monday

After Tiber Flow (Ire) (Caravaggio) and Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) advertised their claims for Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup this weekend, it is the turn of Al Shaqab Racing's Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) to put his name in the hat in Monday's G3 Prix Texanita at Chantilly. The G1 Phoenix S. hero was a disappointing fifth on his return in the six-furlong G3 Abernant S. at Newmarket Apr. 13, but he has plenty in hand on his seven rivals on his best form. One who could make a jump is The Aga Khan's Apr. 27 Fontainebleau maiden winner Haziym (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), a major eyecatcher on pedigree in a sprint as a Francis-Henri Graffard-trained relative of Harzand (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).

Royal Ascot Is Next For Lusail

Dual group winner Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) is pointing to Royal Ascot, trainer Richard Hannon revealed on Tuesday. A start in the one-mile G1 St James's Palace S. or the six-furlong G1 Commonwealth Cup S. are both being considered for the Al Shaqab Racing colourbearer, as is the G3 Jersey S. Successful in both the G2 July S. and G2 Gimcrack S. last term, Lusail resumed with a second in the G3 Greenham S. in mid-April and was a close sixth in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Apr. 30.

“We've put him in the St James's Palace S., the six-furlong race [Commonwealth Cup] and the Jersey S.,” said Hannon.

“It looked like he definitely got a mile at Newmarket, so you may well see him in the St James's Palace. I thought he ran a super race in the Guineas, I was delighted with him.

“I doubt [he will run again], he'll go straight there and at the moment it's looking like the St James's Palace S.”

Fahey Reveals Commonwealth Plan for ‘Power’

Richard Fahey has revealed that Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) will be aimed at the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot with the trainer of the opinion that the colt failed to stay the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas trip at Newmarket on Saturday.

Perfect Power, who won the Greenham S. over seven furlongs at Newbury on his seasonal bow, failed to cope with the extra furlong in the Guineas when seventh behind Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

However, Fahey said he believed a return to six furlongs, a distance at which he won two Group 1 races–the Prix Morny at Deauville and the Middle Park at Newmarket–as a juvenile over will reap rewards.

“It looked that way [didn't stay the Guineas trip], so we'll regroup,” Fahey said. “He travelled well through the race but, just when they picked up, he didn't go with them.

“We had to have a go. It's one of those where you regret it when they run that way, but we can't change it and there's still plenty to look forward to hopefully. He's come out of the race grand, no issues.”

Speaking about future targets, Fahey identified the Commonwealth Cup as the main aim, and added: “We've got to look at that. He's showing plenty of speed, so we'll see. If he goes for that he'll go straight to Royal Ascot.

“There's plenty of races for us, races like the Prix Maurice de Gheest. As we get further on into the year there's plenty of Group 1s to be had.”

Also on Saturday, stablemate Umm Kulthum (Ire) (Kodiac {Ire}) made a successful return from 11 months off the track in the Listed Kilvington S. A tilt at the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. at the Royal meeting could be next.

Fahey said: “I was delighted with her. She's the sort of filly that would prefer it if they went flat out in front as she's always coming home, which is always a huge bonus.

“She finishes her races well and seems to go on any ground, so we'll see how she is. The Duke of York might just come a bit quick, but I'd definitely be thinking about Ascot if conditions turned up on the easy side. The Jubilee might be a race she could run well in.”

Commonwealth Cup Beckons For Castle Star

Craig Bernick and Antony Beck's Group 3 winner Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) will target the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, according to trainer Fozzy Stack. The colt broke his maiden in his third start, the Listed First Flier S. at The Curragh on May 3. He followed that effort with a two-length come-from-behind victory in the G3 Marble Hill S. there later that month. Second in the G2 Railway S. in June, Castle Star was fourth in the G1 Phoenix S. on Aug. 8. He improved to run Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) to just a half-length in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket in his 2-year-old finale on Sept. 25.

“He is in good order,” said Stack. “I'm happy with how he has wintered and the prime objective will be the Commonwealth Cup. We will probably give him a run or two beforehand. There are a couple of options at Naas and Navan, or there's a race at Ascot [Commonwealth Cup Trial] beforehand. It will be one or two of those.

“I don't think the plan will be to run in the Irish 2000 Guineas. I can't see that. I think he is a sprinter. He ran a cracker at Newmarket on his last run, but I don't see him getting a mile at that level.

“The race at Navan at the end of April is a possible starting point and there is a race at Ascot at the end of April. It will probably be one or two of those and if he ran at Ascot, he will probably just do Ascot and then Royal Ascot.”
