Owner John Harris Honored By Edwin J. Gregson Foundation

Thoroughbred owner and breeder John C. Harris will be honored at a charity fundraising dinner hosted by the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation. The event will take place Thursday, August 17, 2023, at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, located just a few miles east of Del Mar Racetrack.

“We're delighted to honor John, not only for the accomplishments of his Harris Farms Horse Division, one of the country's leading racing stables and utmost influential owner/breeder operations, for which he has been inducted into the California Racing Hall of Fame,” says Jenine Sahadi, Foundation President. “We also acknowledge him for his many years of distinguished service to this industry as a California Horse Racing Board commissioner, board member of the Breeders' Cup, Jockey Club, and the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.”

Proceeds of the event will be used for continued sponsorship of various educational and recreational programs to benefit California's backstretch workers and family members.  These programs include provision of scholarship grants, English as a Second Language courses, community-focused family social events, sports and recreation activities and outings.

PDJF Telethon Raises Over $300,000

The fifth annual PDJF Telethon, presented by Lane's End Farm, raised over $300,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Apr. 23. Since the inaugural telethon in 2018, over $1.5 million has been raised to support jockeys who have suffered serious on-track injuries.

“When everyone in the sport comes together, good things can happen,” said Kevin Grigsby, FanDuel TV executive producer. “We are grateful to our industry partners at Keeneland, Santa Anita and NYRA for their collaborative efforts to make this event a success. We are proud of all that we have raised so far but know the work is not done–we are already looking ahead to next year's telethon.”

“Being a part of this event is a great honor,” said Mike Joyce, a board member of the PDJF and on-air host at FanDuel TV. “I want to personally thank every single person who took time to donate to this worthwhile cause. No matter how large or small a donation, each one is so important.”

There were donations from supporters across the country including major donations from Jim McIngvale, Lee Einsidler, Vince Foglia and Lane's End Farm. In addition, FanDuel matched all donations up to $100,000.

“We are grateful to everyone who has been supportive of the annual telethon that has made it a success for the PDJF,” said Nancy LaSala, PDJF Board President. “It also allows the jockeys from the past and present to connect with the racing fans in a very personal way. This would not be possible without the platform provided by FanDuel TV who from the beginning supported this concept.”

Go Fund Me Page Organised For Holland’s Family

A Gofundme fundraiser for the family of the late Australian jockey Dean Holland was launched within 24 hours of the jockey's death and, at the time of writing, it has raised over A$500,000 for Holland's wife Lucy, and their four children.

The page was created by Tony Ottobre in Victoria, who made a personal donation of A$100,000, and overnight and into Tuesday it had attracted over 2000 donations. Dean Holland died as a result of his injuries from a fall on Monday afternoon at Donald. His death has incurred widespread grief across the racing industry.

On Tuesday, Racing Victoria released a statement on behalf of the Holland family, in particular from his partner Lucy and his parents, Belinda and Darren Holland.

“Grief is completely overwhelming us after losing our beloved Dean yesterday at Donald races,” the statement read. “We are aware of the thousands who are sharing our pain as we come to the reality we have lost a once-in-a-lifetime person, a much-loved partner, an amazing father of four beautiful young children in Harley, Luca, Frankie and Lily, as well as a special brother and a wonderful son.

“The outpouring of love for Dean and the care and support for us is helping us deal with our loss. We are thinking of Dean's colleagues in the jockeys' rooms, as well all in our industry that he loved so much.”

The statement requested privacy as the Holland family comes to terms with its loss and, in the meanwhile, Racing Victoria has pledged A$100,000 to the fundraising effort, with all money raised eventually going into a trust to support the family.
