Fall MSW Purses At Churchill ($120k), Keeneland ($100k) To Be Level With ’22 Money

Both Churchill Downs ($120,000) and Keeneland Race Course ($100,000) are projecting maiden special weight (MSW) purses this autumn to be level with the money paid out at the same meets in 2022.

Those figures were revealed by representatives of the two tracks Thursday during a meeting of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF) advisory committee.

The Churchill MSW purses for this year's two fall meets (Sep. 14-Oct. 1 and Oct. 29-Nov. 26) have been unchanged since 2020.

In 2020, Churchill offered split MSW purse values in September-$97,000 during the pandemic-rescheduled GI Kentucky Derby week, then $75,000 for the balance of that month. In November 2020, Churchill's MSW races were $85,000.

Keeneland's fall meet this year spans Oct. 6-28. The MSW races there were worth $84,000 back in 2021. In 2020 they were $70,000 after the track lost the entire April meet to COVID-19 and instead ran during July.

The KTDF is funded by three-quarters of 1% of all money wagered on both live Thoroughbred races and historical horse race (HHR) gaming, plus 2% of all money wagered on Thoroughbred races via inter-track wagering and whole-card simulcasting.

The KTDF advisory committee approved the recommendation of the fall meet allotment requests that the Churchill and Keeneland MSW purse estimates were based on. The full Kentucky Horse Racing Commission still has to vote on final approval of that funding.

Riding A Dream Academy Gains Funding From Racing Foundation

The Riding A Dream Academy has been awarded three years' funding by the Racing Foundation to expand its programmes. The year-long Khadijah Mellah Scholarship for talented riders and a rider-based Residential Week which acts as an introduction to British horse racing is already operating under the Riding A Dream Academy umbrella. Plans for the expansion include a non-rider Residential Week to cater for the large numbers of young people who have applied, but lacked access to horses and sufficient riding experience, and Regional Weeks to take the Academy out to local communities. The programmes will be conducted by the British Racing School.

Rob Hezel, Chief Executive of the Racing Foundation said, “The Racing Foundation would like to congratulate Naomi Lawson and Oli Bell, two individuals with a genuine desire to drive change in the racing industry, on launching the next stage of the Riding a Dream Academy. We are delighted to fund the Academy as it builds on the success of its pilot year and delivers tangible, life-enhancing opportunities for young people passionate about racing.”

New York Legislators Introduce Bill To Shift $230 Million Away From Horse Racing

New York State Sen. Zellnor Myrie (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) have introduced new legislation to divert $230 million in slots funds away from horse racing to schools and human services, reports the Times-Union. The bill would eliminate the direct payments to New York racetracks as well as to breeders.

“The state has been propping up this industry for decades and there is no reason for that to continue, especially when we need the money the state has been giving to the industry,” Rosenthal told the Times-Union.

“NYRA (the New York Racing Association) will vigorously oppose this legislation in order to protect jobs for working families, preserve the horse racing economy and ensure the sport's success now and in the future,” countered NYRA spokesman Patrick McKenna. “Racing support payments are not subsidies. The payments from [slot machine] revenues are made to the Thoroughbred industry in part because NYRA transferred land and other intellectual property to the state in 2008, and has acted as the steward of the properties in the years since.”

Proposals Related To Colic Research Sought; Funding Available

Morris Animal Foundation is now accepting proposals for research studies on equine colic, with a specific focus on the intestinal tract. Grant applications are due by Monday, September 27, 2021, 4:59 p.m. EST., and will be funded in the 2022 fiscal year.

Proposals should advance the knowledge and understanding of one or more of these areas for colic: risk factors, prevention or early detection, feeding and nutrition, and pathophysiology. The Foundation is not accepting new proposals or resubmissions on other topics under this request for proposals.

[Story Continues Below]

Morris Animal Foundation is one of the largest nonprofit organizations worldwide that funds health studies benefiting horses, cats, dogs, llamas, alpacas and wildlife. The Foundation currently is funding 150 studies encompassing a broad spectrum of species and diseases, with approximately $3.3 million in new research funds disbursed annually.

Each year, the Foundation opens four separate calls for its major funding areas – equine, feline, canine and wildlife. This year's equine topic is based on responses to recent surveys of both horse owners and veterinarians which indicated colic as the area most in need of further research.

To be considered for funding, applications are reviewed and rated based on scientific rigor and impact for veterinarians and horse owners by the Foundation's scientific advisory board, comprised of leaders in the international equine research community.

Grant types awarded by the Foundation include Established Investigator, First Award, Fellowship and Pilot Study.
