Delicada Beats The Boys in Final Derby Points Race

Delicada (Jpn) (Pyro) went for a gap from between horses in the dying strides and it proved a decisive move, as she was along for a neck victory in Saturday's Fukuryu S. (allowance) at Nakayama Racecourse. Facing no other rivals that had previously accumulated points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby, Delicada has the right of first refusal for a berth in the race, having earned 40 points to shoot to the head of the class. She was not an original nominee to the Triple Crown series.

Perfect in two starts at Hanshin last term, each over the same 1800-meter distance, Delicada–the only filly in a field of eight– lined up here as the 7-1 third choice to fellow previously unbeaten Ho O Roulette (Jpn) (Roses In May). Away cleanly from gate four, the gray filly settled three wide and not far from the speed as the rail-drawn 3-10 favorite showed the way. Traveling without cover throughout, Delicada was scrubbed on three deep at the quarter pole, but appeared flat-footed in upper stretch. Ho O Roulette backed out of it abruptly with 150 meters to race, but Delicada responded to jockey Ryuji Wada's urgings and was up in the final few strides (see below). Notturno (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}–Sheikh's Serenade) was second ahead of 241-1 outsider Peisha Es (Jpn) (Espoir City {Jpn}).

The winner, a daughter of Bronx Silver (Jpn) (Kurofune), is unlikely to take up the Derby assignment. The series leader, with 38 points, is Godolphin's Combustion (Jpn) (Discreet Cat), who was to run in Saturday's G2 UAE Derby at Meydan. The homebred was not an original nominee to the Triple Crown and would need to be supplemented for $6,000 at the upcoming second closing stage.

God Selection Too Strong In Final Derby Points Race

Prominent every step of the 1800-meter journey despite a somewhat awkward draw, God Selection (Jpn) (Novellist {Ire}) took command in the straight and drew clear to win Saturday's Fukuryu S. (allowance) at Nakayama, earning 40 points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby in the process.

Ridden for speed from the 13 hole in a field of 14, God Selection was down into the two path and prompted the pace from second as Lord Strom (Jpn) (Makfi {GB}) galloped them along. Ridden cold on the turn and into the final quarter-mile, God Selection put a couple of lengths on his rivals when asked to sprint in upper stretch and proved easily best, as market leaders Meisho Murakaumo (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) and favored Gold Higher (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) ran on for minor prizes.

God Selection, a maternal grandson of 2007 champion Japanese older mare Koiuta (Jpn) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}), was winning for the third time in five career starts and was exiting an eight-length allowance score at Chukyo Feb. 7.

The victory earns the connections of God Selection a guaranteed berth in the May 1 Kentucky Derby, but he was not an original nominee to the Triple Crown and would need to be supplemented. Should they decline the invitation, the offer would be extended, in order, to the connections of the three next-highest points-getters. Currently second on 30 points is La Perouse (Jpn) (Pelusa {Jpn}), who was among the early entries for the Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby Berth For The Taking in Fukuryu S.

Nakayama Racecourse plays host to the $315,808 Fukuryu S. Saturday afternoon, an allowance race that serves as the last of the four legs on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby and carries a total of 68 points for the first four finishers. The winner of the 1800-meter test earns 40 points, and with none of the horses who saluted in the first three legs taking part, a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May is all but assured.

Your History (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}), a debut second going this distance at Hanshin Dec. 5, backed up on two weeks' rest to take out his maiden over that course and trip before finishing off the board in a lone try on the grass. The bay colt, bred on the same cross as G1 Dubai World Cup starter Chuwa Wizard (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) was back to winning ways with a seven-length tally on the Hanshin dirt Mar. 7 and has longshot claims.

Gold Higher (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) has also been campaigned exclusively over this distance and was runner-up in his first two appearances before breaking through when heavily favored Jan. 5. He followed up with a five-length success at the 1-win allowance level at Hanshin Feb. 20 and is the overnight favorite on the Japanese tote.

Four fillies take on their male counterparts here, including the unbeaten Giuditta (Jpn) (Danon Legend {Jpn}), who defeated recent maiden romper Portafiglio (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}–Unlimited Budget) on Hanshin debut Nov. 7 and added a Jan. 24 Chukyo allowance in strong time Jan. 24.

Taisei Again (Jpn) (Pyro), a two-time winner from four starts, picked up two Kentucky Derby points when fourth to Alain Barows (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) in the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun in December and the $414,900 JRHA Select Yearling purchase makes his first start since.

None of the 10 male entrants in the Fukuryu S., won in 2019 by Triple Crown participant Master Fencer (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}), was nominated to the Triple Crown at its first closing in January. Connections may add their horses for a fee of $6,000 at the late Triple Crown closing Monday, Mar. 29.
