Florida Sire Series Wraps Up With My Dear Girl, In Reality Saturday At Gulfstream

The $1.4 million FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series will wrap up Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., with the $400,000 My Dear Girl, a 1 1/16-mile stakes for fillies, and the $400,000 In Reality, the 1 1/16-mile open division.

The FSS series finals for 2-year-olds sired accredited Florida stallions will be supported on Saturday's program by the $125,000 FSS Wildcat Heir, a mile stakes for 3-year-olds and up sired by accredited Florida Stallions, and the $100,000 Hollywood Beach, a five-furlong turf sprint for 2-year-olds.

LNJ Foxwoods' Outfoxed, a breathtaking 13 ½-length winner of the $200,000 FSS Susan's Girl Aug. 28 at Gulfstream, is the star attraction in the My Dear Girl. The Bill Mott-trained daughter of Valiant Minister has subsequently had a pair of half-mile breezes at Gulfstream.

Outfoxed broke her maiden in the seven-furlong Susan's Girl while coming off a third-place finish behind Echo Zulu in a Saratoga maiden special weight race July 15. Echo Zulu came right back to capture the Sept. 5 Spinaway (G1) at Saratoga.

Stonehedge LLC's Cajun's Magic, the winner of the $100,000 FSS Dr. Fager, and Arindel's Octane, who captured the $200,000 FSS Affirmed, are slated to clash in the In Reality around two turns. Octane led throughout the Affirmed while finishing 3 ¼ lengths clear of runner-up Cajun's Magic.

Gulfstream will also host the Taste at the Track event Saturday Bourbon & BBQ. The unlimited testing event begins at 1 p.m. in the Flamingo Room. Guests will be able to enjoy a variety of southern-style dishes, paired with your favorite premium bourbons, whiskeys and handcrafted cocktails.

Octane Powers To Victory In Affirmed At Gulfstream

Octane set a quick early pace, but the Arindel homebred had plenty left in the tank for the stretch on his way to a commanding 3 ¼ -length victory in the $200,000 Affirmed at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Affirmed, a seven-furlong open-division sprint, and the $200,000 Affirmed, a seven-furlong sprint for fillies, co-headlined Saturday's second leg of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida.

Octane, one of four Arindel homebred sons of Brethren in an 11-horse field, broke alertly from his rail position and rushed up to lead along the backstretch, pressed by Lightning Larry and stalked by Big and Classy, $100,000 FSS Dr. Fager winner Cajun's Magic, and King Cab. Octane set fractions of :22.50 and :45.24 for the first half-mile with Cajun's Magic looming prominently in pursuit turning into the stretch. The Dr. Fager winner gave it his best shot, but Octane kicked clear through the stretch under Emisael Jaramillo to complete the seven furlongs in 1:25.16.

Cajun's Magic, the 7-5 favorite, finished second under Jesus Rios, three lengths ahead of Big and Classy and jockey Edwin Gonzalez.

Octane, who finished second in his June 18 debut, was coming off a July 17 maiden victory in which he overcame traffic and fractious behavior at the starting gate.

“I love this little horse. He's small but he has a ton of heart,” trainer Carlos David said. “He was a little bit nervous prior to his second start. He was a little wild behind the gate. I had to put a lot of gate work into him and teach him to stand right. He's got some growing up to do, but I think he's going to be all right.”

Octane, who was sent to post at 10-1, was stretching out two furlongs from his five-furlong maiden score.

“I think the workout he had about a week ago was key. It was five furlongs, galloping out three-quarters in 1:13. That told me that he can definitely get the distance. I was very confident coming into this race,” David said.

The 2021 Florida Sire Stakes series will conclude Sept. 25 at Gulfstream with the open-division $400,000 In Reality and the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies. Both races will be run around two turns at 1 1/16 miles.

“I know the next leg is a mile-and-sixteenth, so it is challenging. I'll have to talk to the connections. Arindel has been great. They've given me the opportunity to train for them,” David said. “We have great communication. We'll talk about it and make a plan.”

Gulfstream Park: With Mandatory Payout, Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Pool Could Reach $3 Million

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 pool is scheduled for Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where the $100,000 Desert Vixen and $100,000 Dr. Fager will kick off the 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series.

The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for 13 consecutive racing days since a June 30 mandatory payout. Rainbow 6 wagering will start Saturday with a carryover jackpot pool of $500,634.97.

Saturday's pool is expected to reach approximately $3 million.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory-payout days, the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 8-13, including the Desert Vixen, a six-furlong sprint for juvenile fillies, in Race 10, and the Dr. Fager, a six-furlong open division for 2-year-olds, in Race 12.

In the Desert Vixen, Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Noble Dreamer, an impressive 7 ½-length winner in her second career start, will seek to even the score with Demurely, who defeated her in her debut.

Joe Orseno-trained Hope in Him, a dominating five-length winner in his debut, is rated as the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the Dr. Fager. Jeff Engler-trained Lightening Larry, who finished second behind Hope In Him in his debut, will try the favorite again Saturday after scoring by two-lengths in his second career start.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will kick off with a mile event for $6250 claimers in Race 8, in which the ultra-consistent Gilberto Zerpa-trained Candy Crushem is narrowly favorite in the morning line over tough-as-nails Green Mansions, who returned to winning form last time out against similar company.

A wide-open $25,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on turf, which will likely be a popular 'spread' race in Rainbow 6 betting, follows in Race 9. The Desert Vixen will be followed by an optional claiming allowance at 7 ½ furlongs on turf in Race 11 that should prove challenging to Rainbow 6 bettors. Plenum, who is rated as the 2-1 morning-line favorite, will seek his seventh-straight in-the-money finish since joining trainer Oscar Gonzalez's barn.

The Dr. Fager will be followed by the $60,000 Harbor Islands overnight handicap, a highly competitive five-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares that will anchor the Rainbow 6 sequence. Steven Dwoskin-trained Choose Joy is rated as the 2-1 morning-line favorite on the strength of a victory in the Golden Beach and a narrow loss in the Biscayne Landing in her last two starts. Amador Sanchez-trained Lagertha, who won the Biscayne Landing after finishing second behind Choose Joy in the Golden Beach, is rated second at 5-2 in the morning line.

Hope In Him, Lightening Larry Square Off Again In Dr. Fager

Breeze Easy LLC's Mike Hall and Sam Ross made a considerable leap of faith when they bought a modestly bred son of Chitu for $190,000 at this year's OBS March sale for 2-year-olds in training.

Hope in Him rewarded their confidence in his stakes potential with a sensational debut victory that instantly established him as a leading prospect for the 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes. The annual series for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida gets under way Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where a mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 carryover pool will also be held.

The Joe Orseno-trained Hope in Him, the 8-5 favorite, is scheduled to meet eight other juveniles in the $100,000 Dr. Fager, a six-furlong sprint that will co-headline Saturday's program with the $100,000 Desert Vixen, a six-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies.

“The owner, Mike Hall, and the fellow who picks out our horses, Tom McGreevy, did all the work [in Ocala]. When I got there, they said, 'Meet us at the barn. We want you to take a look at this colt. We like him and want to know what you think,'” Orseno said. “I went over there, and I just fell in love with him.”

Hope in Him made an auspicious debut in a 4 ½-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream June 4, breaking sharply from the gate to set the pace before drawing away to a five-length triumph.

“He lived up to our expectations. He really did. I thought he was a nice horse when we bought him,” Orseno said. “We took him down here and he trained forwardly with everything he did. He's a natural out of the gate.”

Samy Camacho has been named to ride Hope in Him, replacing the recuperating Edwin Gonzalez.

Hope in Him's victory became even more impressive when runner-up Lightening Larry came back to score a solid maiden special weight win June 18. Lea Farms LLC's Lightening Larry is slated to take on Hope in Him again in the Dr. Fager.

The son of Uncaptured chased Hope in Him in his debut, finishing 2 ¼ lengths clear of the third-place finisher. Two weeks later, the Jeff Engler-trained Florida-bred graduated by two lengths, drawing clear after pressing the early pace in the five-furlong sprint.

“We knew we had a nice horse. I was pleased with his first start. Obviously, the other first-time starter left there running and never stopped,” Engler said. “I thought Larry ran on well and got a lot of education from that race. It showed in his second race, because he ran much better and finished better.”

Engler said he expects Lightening Larry, 6-1, to appreciate the six furlongs of the Dr. Fager.

“I think the added-distance in the stake will help us against Hope in Him. We'll just have to see, but I know he's doing really well,” Engler said.

Romero Maragh has the return mount aboard Lightening Larry

Stonehedge LLC's Gil and Marilyn Campbell, who have won 15 Florida Sire Stakes races, will be represented by homebreds Dean Delivers (4-1) and Cajun's Magic (5-1) Saturday. Dean Delivers won his debut by 7 ½ lengths June 26, kicking away to an impressive score after pressing the early pace in a five-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream.

“I expected if he ran back to his breezes, he'd run well,” Yates said. “He kind of showed himself, with a couple others, early on in their training. We were probably pretty conservative bringing them up to their races. They didn't have a lot of fast works.”

Cajun's Magic, who finished a close second in his May 29 debut, graduated by 4 ¾ lengths July 3 at Gulfstream.

Miguel Vasquez has the call on Dean Delivers, while Jesus Rios has the return mount on Cajun's Magic.

Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's Big and Classy (8-1) is also coming off a dominating victory, breaking his maiden in his second career start by 5 ¾ length at the seven-furlong distance June 18. The David Fawkes-trained son of The Big Beast had finished an even fourth in his five-furlong debut a month earlier.

Emisael Jaramillo has the return mount.

Bella Inizio Farm's Laki Lio (10-1), a debut winner at Gulfstream April 16 by 3 ½ lengths; Arindel's Merlin (15-1), who has finished second in all three career starts; Amalio Ruiz-Lozano's Gold Special (20-1), a six-length winner in a maiden $35,000 claimer in his second start; and Joseph Imbesi's Palimonium (15-1), who finished fourth in his recent debut; round out the field.

The Florida Sire Stakes series will will continue Aug. 28 with the $200,000 Affirmed and the $200,000 Susan's Girl for fillies, both slated for seven furlongs, and Sept. 25 with the $400,000 In Reality and the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies, both to be run around two turns at 1 1/16 miles.
