Raise Cain Perfectly Timed at Wire in Keeneland’s Perryville

Snapping a six-race slide and returning to the winner's enclosure for the first-time since his GII Gotham S. win in the spring, Raise Cain (c, 3, Violence–Lemon Belle, by Lemon Drop Kid) nipped Dr. Venkman (Ghostzapper) in the shadow of the wire to score in the Perryville S.

The aforementioned GI Kentucky Derby prep race has been his only victory in 2023, and in pairing with a nose runner-up effort in the GIII Indiana Derby July 8 to familiar foe GSW & MGISP Verifying (Justify), has been the only time the son of Violence has been on the board this year. The 6-1 distant third choice here for the cut back in distance behind that returning rival and the eventual runner-up, Raise Cain was content to stalk from fourth as a leading trio battled it out on the front. Riding the rail into the turn but moved to the outside at the five sixteenths pole, he was rolling in the six path with a full head of steam entering the lane. Locking horns with Dr. Venkman after catching him late in the stretch, he nailed that rival in the shadow of the wire by a head as Post Time (Frosted) rallied from last to round out the trifecta.

 

“I think it's probably what he wants to do. His only wins were around one turn. He got us to the (GI Kentucky) Derby and he's been such an over-achieving horse, he really deserved it,” said Ben Colebrook. “I think (jockey) Luis Saez made the difference. He rode him great. I mean, all the riders have ridden him well, but Luis gives you that just extra little bit. That's probably what we needed today.”

The first black-type runner for his dam, Raise Cain joins a trio of siblings to get their picture taken on the mare's tally. Lemon Belle, out of MGSW Queenie Belle (Bertrando)–making her a half-sister to GISW & MGISP Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), dam of two-time champion MGISW Unique Bella (Tapit)–has a 2-year-old Frostelle (Frosted) as well as a 2023 Constitution colt and visited red-hot Justify for 2024. Cody’s Wish, Proxy, Join Darley 2024 Stallion Roster Headed by Nyquist

With a fee of $85,000, Nyquist (Uncle Mo) will lead the way among a total of 13 stallions who will stand at Darley's Jonabell Farm in 2024, including two new additions in GI winners Cody's Wish (Curlin) and Proxy (Tapit), according to Darley America.

Cody's Wish, out of GI winner Dance Card (by Tapit), is expected to make his final start in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile after winning the race in 2022. A winner of 10 of 15 career starts, Cody's Wish has never finished out of the first three during his career. He heads into the Breeders' Cup boasting additional GI victories in the Met Mile, the Churchill Downs S., and the Forego S. He matched his career-high Beyer of 112 in this year's Met Mile, the same figure he achieved in last year's Forego, which is the co-top Beyer in 2023, along with Echo Zulu (Gun Runner). In addition, his 112 Beyer last year was bettered only by Flightline and future Darley stud mate Speaker's Corner.

Proxy is expected to make his next appearance on Breeders' Cup Saturday in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. By Tapit, he has won or placed in a total of 10 graded stakes, including a victory in the GI Clark S. and was within a nose and a neck of two additional Grade I wins in the Santa Anita H. and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He is out of multiple GI winner Panty Raid (Include), making him the only son of Tapit out of a multiple Grade I-winning mare. The dam has also produced Grade II winner Micheline, a daughter of Bernardini.

Fees for Cody's Wish and Proxy will be announced following the Breeders' Cup.

The champion first-crop sire of 2020, Nyquist, who stood for $55,000 in 2023, has had a strong 2023 as the sire of GI Alabama S. winner Randomized, GI Awesome Again S. winner Slow Down Andy, GII Amsterdam S. winner New York Thunder–where he ran a 110 Beyer–and the Royal Ascot-winning two-year-old Crimson Advocate. Randomized and Xigera both head next to the Breeders' Cup Distaff, while Crimson Advocate is expected in the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado {Ire})'s stud fee will be $75,000 for 2024, down from $100,000 in 2023. The stallion is North America's leading active sire of worldwide stakes winners with 176. His son Golden Sixty (Aus) is currently the highest-earning horse in training with a bankroll of nearly $19 million. He was the sire of a $1.1 million yearling at Keeneland September, bringing his career total to 55 million-dollar sales horses.

Multiple Eclipse champion Essential Quality (Tapit) and dual Grade I winner Maxfield (Street Sense) will stand at fees of $65,000 and $35,000, respectively, next year. Their first foals will sell at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton next month.

Street Sense (Street Cry {Ire})'s fee will be at $60,000, Hard Spun (Danzig)'s at $35,000, while second year stallions Speaker's Corner (Street Sense) and Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) will stand for $17,500 and $12,500, respectively.

Leofric’s Canigetaloan Becomes Sire’s First Stakes Winner in Aspirant

Canigetaloan (Leofric) had to lay it all down, but gamely managed to fight off a familiar foe in a wild finish to break his maiden, score his first black-type victory in the Aspirant S., and tally the first stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) all at once.

Debuting in the same Aug. 11 state-bred maiden at Saratoga as Trust Fund (Practical Joke), who would go on to win by 2 1/4 lengths, Canigetaloan came out on the better end of the photo for second and would have to face that foe again here. In hand early as he coasted along from fourth, he took to the rail through the turn and was cut loose to gain a slim advantage by the sixteenth pole. Canigetaloan turned the table on Trust Fund on the wire while Tall Paul (Frosted) would lose second to the latter in a blanket finish.

Canigetaloan is the most recent winner to the races for his dam, who also produced the winning Avid Sucinori (Ironicus) as her first offspring. The winner has a uearling full-sister as well as a 2023 half-brother by Unified. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

‘A Lot of People, a Lot of Energy & a Lot of Activity’ – Bolt d’Oro Filly Leads Way During KEESEP Book 5 Finale

A filly by Bolt d'Oro brought $127,000 from Choctaw Racing to lead the way during Thursday's Book 5 finale at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. A son of Frosted was the highest-priced colt on the day and the session's second-highest priced yearling, realizing $110,000 from the Korea Racing Authority.

Ten yearlings brought $100,000 or more during the session while 13 hit that mark last year.

Keeneland sold a total of 289 yearlings through the ring Thursday for $9,276,500, good for an average of $32,099 and a median of $25,000. The gross was down 10.24% from last year's $10,335,000 when 308 horses sold. The average decreased 4.34% from $33,555 in 2022, while the median stayed the same.

Cumulatively, a total of 2,392 yearlings have changed hands for $388,649,700, good for an average of $162,479 and a median of $85,000. The gross is 2.82% below the same period last year when 2,488 horses sold for $399,940,000. The average price of $162,479 is slightly above $160,748, while the median of $85,000 is equal to last year.

Calumet Farm acquired five yearlings for a total of $390,000 to be the session's leading buyer. Taylor Made Sales Agency was Thursday's leading consignor with gross sales of $795,000 for 25 horses sold.

“Today has been amazing,” Taylor Made's Mark Taylor said nearing the end of Thursday's session.

“I don't know what the final numbers will bear out. But it's just been amazing–the activity. Horses got shown more than they ever have in Book 5 and they've gotten vetted more than they ever have in Book 5. And generally speaking, if they vet, they are selling very well. To me, it feels like a lot of people, a lot of energy and a lot of activity. A lot of it is driven by the pinhookers, who have been shut out along the way. I expect Book 6 to be better than usual.”

Airdrie Stud freshman sire Complexity led all sires on the day with eight yearlings sold, including a pair of six-figure sellers, for a total of $402,000 ($50,250 average). Taylor Made Stallions's fellow first-crop sire Instagrand checked in third on the day with eight yearlings bringing $369,000 ($46,125 average). Darley's Frosted split the pair with seven yearlings realizing $399,000 ($57,000 average).

Bred in Kentucky by Gabriel Duignan's Springhouse Farm, Thursday's Bolt d'Oro session topper was consigned as Hip 3590 by Paramount Sales, Agent LXXXIII. The daughter of the unraced Tale of the Cat mare Tigress Tale is a half-sister to last summer's Coronation Cup S. heroine Empress Tigress (Classic Empire).

The aforementioned son of Frosted was produced by the Forest Wildcat mare Streaker, a half-sister to Phipps GISWs Pine Island (Arch) and Point of Entry (Dynaformer). Consigned by Brookdale Sales, agent, as Hip 3572, he was bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Oliver S. Tait.

The September Sale has two sessions remaining on Friday and Saturday, both beginning at 10 a.m. ET.

Nothing But Net…

DeJuan Smith, a ringman for Keeneland and also a show person for Taylor Made Sales, enjoyed a fantastic return on investment with a colt from the first crop of Instagrand on Thursday.

Purchased for just $15,000 earlier this year as a FTKFEB yearling, the New York-bred brought $105,000 from Don't Stop Me Now Stable at KEESEP.

Out of the winning More Than Ready mare Sistas Ready, the dark bay received a very timely update when his 2-year-old half-brother Vote No (Divisidero) captured the Pepsi Juvenile Sprint S. at Kentucky Downs last week.

He was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent XXVII, as Hip 3552.

“DeJuan started pinhooking last year, had some success and did very well,” Taylor said. “This was his only one that he had this year and just did a great job raising the horse. It was a New York-bred and he got a very timely update right before the sale. It all came together and he did very well.”

Instagrand has also been represented by a $350,000 colt (Hip 1524) and a $125,000 colt (Hip 1174) so far during this Keeneland September sale. He stood for $7,500 this year.

“Instagrand has been great and a lot of people are talking about him,” Taylor said. “He's throwing really nice-looking horses. He's got a lot of momentum right now.”
