Ouija Board, Classic Winner and Producer, Dies at 21

Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), the brilliant racemare and dam of Derby winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), has died at the age of 21.

Confirming the dual Classic winner's passing on Tuesday, her breeder Lord Derby said, “In our wildest dreams, we never imagined we could breed a horse that would be a global record-breaker and inspire so many people with so many happy memories. She was simply the best and always had the most wonderful temperament. She loved a hug and a polo mint every time we walked around the stud. We were so lucky to have her in our lives as she brought us so much joy. The fun and the pleasure that she gave us in a four-year journey around the globe will give us happy memories forever.”

Trained by Ed Dunlop, Ouija Board won the Oaks and Irish Oaks and rounded off her Classic season with victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. At four, she added the Hong Kong Vase to her Group 1 haul and then remained in training at five to win the G1 Prince of Wales's S. and G1 Nassau S. before a repeat success at the Breeders' Cup.

Retired home to her owner's Stanley House Stud in Newmarket, Ouija Board produced five winners, led by Australia, who now stands at Coolmore in Ireland, while his half-brother, the Group 2 winner and Group 1 runner-up Frontiersman (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is at Overbury Stud in England. Another son, Voodoo Prince (GB) (Kingmambo) won a Group 3 in Australia.

Stud manager Peter Stanley, the brother of Lord Derby, said, “It has been a privilege to be associated with such an extraordinary and remarkable filly. Even in one's wildest dreams one dare not dream of a filly such as Ouija board. She danced every dance and more beside. Her stud career was equally inspiring, producing in the same year a Derby winner with Australia, and the Melbourne Cup favourite at the same time. She followed this up with Frontiersman finishing second in the Group 1 Coronation Cup. If I have one sadness, it is that she left us only one daughter, but the truth is she was a joy from beginning to end.”

Ed Dunlop added, “What a champion she was. I was so, so lucky to be entrusted with such a great horse. There were so many happy and great moments with her that is impossible to single out one. Winning the Oaks was so special for me as a trainer, and the iconic Nassau battle will live long in the memory. Putting it simply she changed my life and I owe her a huge, huge debt.”

Ardad Heads Overbury Roster As Golden Horn Set At 8k

Ardad (GB), the sire of G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Perfect Power (Ire), will head the Overbury Stud roster at an unchanged £12,500 while new recruit Golden Horn (GB) has been set at £8,000.

The brilliant G1 Derby winner and European Horse of the Year in 2015, Golden Horn joined Overbury Stud in July after being sold to new investors from Darley and Anthony Oppenheimer.

He will stand alongside 2015 Irish Derby hero Jack Hobbs (GB), whose fee has not been decided upon, and Frontiersman (GB), who will once again stand for just £1,000. Also on the Overbury team is Schiaparelli (Ger) at £2,000.

Overbury Stud's manager Simon Sweeting said, “I think we've got stallions for most ambitions and most tastes–certainly they are all showing they can sire horses you'd be proud to have bred.

“We're really looking forward to talking to breeders about their mares and we'll be doing our best for them in the season ahead. I hope we can have as lucky a run in 2023 as we've had in the past year or two.”

Overbury Stud Trims Fees For 2021

Overbury Stud has announced reduced stud fees for three of its five stallions for 2021.

Ardad (Ire), who will have his first runners next season, will stand at £4,000 having stood his first three seasons at £6,500. Cityscape (GB) will also stand at £4,000, while Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs, another with first 2-year-olds in 2021, has also had his fee reduced by £1,000 and will stand at £3,000.

The fee for Schiaparelli (Ger) will return to £2,000 after he stood last year at £1,500, while Frontiersman (GB), whose first foals were born this year, will remain at £1,000. A regally-bred son of Dubawi (Ire) and Ouija Board (GB), Frontiersman covered more than 60 mares in his first season and just over 100 this year.

Commenting on the fee adjustments, Overbury Stud’s Simon Sweeting said, “Our stallions have actually enjoyed many successes in 2021, and we certainly wouldn’t be reducing their fees if it weren’t for the pandemic. But just about every business is having to be cautious about the future, and we hope breeders will find our fees as good value as ever.”

He continued, “Take Cityscape, for instance: his best horse so far is rated 124 by Timeform—there are plenty of stallions at far higher fees who can’t boast that. And we can hardly wait to see the first Ardads get to the racecourse next spring. His yearlings went down very well with proper judges, and it’s exciting to see so many trainers who are famed for their Royal Ascot 2-year-olds stocking up on them.”

Sweeting, who retired Overbury Stud’s 11-time leading British National Hunt sire Kayf Tara (GB) earlier this year, added, “Jack Hobbs is, we hope, his ready-made replacement. He’s been patronised by top breeders and his stock certainly look the part. As for Schiaparelli, well, his offspring are doing so well, they share the same head-down attitude to racing that he had, and it’s particularly fortunate they seem to excel at Cheltenham. His Stayers’ Hurdle runner-up, Ronald Pump, and Indefatigable, who won the Martin Pipe off top-weight, are two of his flag-bearers, and are horses any jumps breeder would be thrilled to have produced.”
