Chop Chop Becomes City of Light’s First Stakes Winner at KYD

No wind, no rain, no summer storm was stopping Chop Chop from securing a first career stakes victory for herself and her freshman sire (by Quality Road) in the Aristocrat Gaming Juvenile Fillies S. She was also the second winner on the card for City of Light, following in the hoofsteps of impressive graduate Gaslight Dancer.

A stalk-and-pounce winner on debut at Ellis Park Aug. 14, Chop Chop rated kindly from third here and drafted into the turn behind a pair of dueling leaders through :24.11 and :49.99 splits. Shifting out and making a three-wide rally leaving the turn, she locked horns with Towhead as the fillies battled to the wire in the driving rain. Chop Chop was on the winning end of the bob as the pair nine lengths ahead of C C Cruise Control.

“We've always liked her a lot,” Cox said by phone. “We had a lot of confidence in her today. [Jockey] Reylu [Gutierrez] didn't have much experience there, but, hey, it worked out. He had a lot of confidence in the filly. He actually breezed her last week as well and thought that she was set up for a big effort and she gave us one.”

A half to one other to the races, Chop Chop is the first stakes horse for her young dam, a half-sister to GISW, and track-record setter Rail Trip (Jump Start). She has a yearling half-sister by Omaha Beach and a 2022 half-sister by Constitution. She went to Liam's Map for 2023. This is the female family of MGISW Palace Malice (Curlin) and GISP Justin Palace (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Justify’s Aspen Grove Shocks The Flame Of Tara

Craig Bernick's twice-raced maiden Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify–Data Dependent, by More Than Ready) went postward as an unconsidered 66-1 outsider for Saturday's G3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF S. at the Curragh and pounced late in the one-mile former Flame Of Tara S. to secure a first win of any kind. The January-foaled bay debuted with a fifth over six furlongs at the Co. Kildare venue in May, but slipped to 12th when upped to seven at the same track in June last time. The eventual winner settled off the pace in rear through halfway. Coming under pressure to close approaching the quarter-mile marker, she quickened smartly to launch her challenge out wide with 100 yards remaining and kept on in impressive fashion from there to win by 1 1/4 lengths going away from Shelton (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

“She ran well here [on Irish] Guineas weekend and we always knew she wanted further,” said winning trainer Fozzy Stack. “The ground was then lightning fast here on the Friday of [Irish] Derby weekend and she just didn't let herself down on it. We'll see whether we run her again [this year] or not.”

Aspen Grove, the third pattern-race winner for her first-crop sire (by Scat Daddy), is the first foal out of GIII Jimmy Durante S. runner-up Data Dependant (More Than Ready), herself kin to G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) and Listed Denford S. victor Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her second dam Daneleta (Danehill), who ran third in the G3 Railway S., is the dam of G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway). Aspen Grove's third dam is Listed Athasi S. and Listed Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial S. victrix Zavaleta (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}), herself kin to G1 Gran Criterium hero Sholokhov (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who is also the dam of Daneleta's G3 Noblesse S.-winning full-sister Danelissima (Ire). Data Dependant has also produced a yearling colt by No Nay Never and a weanling full-brother to Aspen Grove.

Freshman Sire Hawkbill Off The Mark At Musselburgh

Alice Haynes trainee Harry's Hero (GB) (Hawkbill–Flora Medici {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}) became the first winner for his Darley Japan freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy) when dominating his rivals in the closing stages of Wednesday's British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden S. over an extended seven furlongs at Musselburgh.

1st-Musselburgh, £8,000, Mdn, 8-24, 2yo, 7f 33yT, 1:33.50, gd.
HARRY'S HERO (GB) (c, 2, Hawkbill–Flora Medici {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}), an Aug. 4 debut third going a shade over six furlongs at Great Yarmouth last time, was well away from an outer gate to chase the leaders in fifth and was left in third after two rivals failed to negotiate the home turn. Sent to the front with three furlongs remaining, the 6-1 chance was urged ever clear inside the final quarter mile before gearing down late to easily outpoint Devil's Kingdom (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) by 2 1/2 lengths, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy). Harry's Hero is the latest of three foals and second scorer produced by a multiple-winning daughter of Florentia (GB) (Medicean {GB}), herself a multiple-winning  half-sister to Listed Preis des Casino Baden-Baden third Clarion (GB) (First Trump {GB}). Sydneyarms Chelsea A Stakes First For Sioux Nation At Deauville

Charles Hill trainee Sydneyarms Chelsea (Ire) (Sioux Nation–Wedding Dress {GB}, by Tamayuz {GB}) ran fourth in Deauville's July 10 Listed Prix Roland de Chambure last time and was back over the same seven-furlong strip to register a career high in Tuesday's G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing, whilst also providing her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy) with a first black-type success. She had previously snagged her May 31 debut at Newbury and posted a fifth contesting Royal Ascot's June 17 G3 Albany S. in her penultimate start. Isolated in third as those in front went clear, the 67-10 chance made continued progress in the straight to launch her challenge passing the furlong marker and was ridden out to subdue the other British raider Ipanema Princess (Ire) (Kessaar {Ire}) before holding the late threat of Roland de Chambure runner-up Terrestrial (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) by 3/4-of-a-length. Ipanema Princess finished a length back in third, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of 'TDN Rising Star' Gain It (GB) (De Treville {GB}), who raced too freely through the early fractions and was a spent force at the business end.

“She is still a big baby, but she's a very nice filly indeed,” commented Ryan Moore. “She had run a very good race over course and distance last time, but she does have a tendency to idle and pull up when she hits the front. She stuck at it today and finished off the race well.”

Sydneyarms Chelsea, half-sister to a yearling colt by Zoffany (Ire), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by a winning half-sister to Listed Prix des Lilas third Delhi (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's second dam Dream Day (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) ran second in the G3 Fred Darling S. and is one of three black-type performers out of Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr victrix and G3 Fred Darling third Capistrano Day (Diesis {GB). Capistrano Day, in turn, is a daughter of GI Beverly Hills H. heroine Alcando (Ire) (Alzao).
