Santa Anita-Based ‘Free Animal Doctor’ Continues to Help Pet Owners

Now entering its second year, Santa Anita-based Free Animal Doctor, a non-profit that provides free veterinary services to dogs and cats, has paid out more than $300,000 in veterinary care on pets based in Southern California and throughout the United States. Additionally, Free Animal Doctor will have spayed or neutered approximately 825 dogs or cats by year's end and will have vaccinated and/or micro-chipped more than half of them.

Free Animal Doctor (FAD), conveniently located in Santa Anita's parking lot 7, opened its doors to the public Sept. 15, 2020. FAD utilizes crowdfunding to raise monies for specific pets and provides itemized cost accounting which is directed by each animal's attending veterinarian.

“During the past year, our relationships with the Pasadena Humane Society and the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society have blossomed,” said Sam Bernardo, FAD co-founder. “This is in large part due to the fact that our respective missions complement each other. Both of these organizations refer us to individuals who can't afford their pet's unexpected veterinary care.

“We are also listed as spay and neuter alternatives on their websites. In return, we offer fund raising services to both PHS and SGVHS.”

Bernardo, a practicing attorney who is based in Sierra Madre, explained that through crowdfunding, costs are limited to each specific veterinary procedure.

“Once the money is raised for each individual animal's procedure, no additional money is accepted,” he said.

Santa Anita's backstretch community has also benefitted from FAD, as the clinic has twice provided special days on which spay and neutering is available for just $25 per pet.

“As we had hoped, our spay and neuter clinics have also become popular with [animal] rescues and other non-profits,” said Bernardo. “For example, last month, we teamed up with a rescue sponsored by Kacey Montoya, a reporter with KTLA Channel 5, to provide a free spay and neuter clinic. And we have agreed to have similar clinics with two other Southern California non-profit rescues early next year.”

Santa Anita ‘Good Neighbor’ Policy Provides Spacious Grounds For Community Organizations

In what has been an incredibly challenging year for all segments of society, Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., has been quick to assist a number of schools, local service organizations and others in need of open space for a wide variety of needs, including fund raising, small animal veterinary care, driver training, fire evacuation, E-Waste collection and much more.

One recent example of Santa Anita's community service came this past September, when the track assisted the American Red Cross and the city of Arcadia by serving as an evacuation site for the  Bobcat Fire which was raging in the nearby San Gabriel Mountains.

“Being a good neighbor is something we take great pride in,” said Pete Siberell, Santa Anita's longtime Director of Community Services and Special Projects.  “With the on-going Covid crisis, there has been an increased need for open space and we're very fortunate to be in a position to assist a number of local entities, including schools, Arcadia Fire, Methodist Hospital, the Girl Scouts of America, small animal veterinary needs and many more.

“Horse racing is obviously our core business and although we remain open for training and look forward to our traditional Winter/Spring Meet opener on Dec. 26, we are still not allowed to admit the general public, so this has opened up our parking lots and Grandstand areas throughout the year for a variety of projects and community oriented events.”

One very significant recent development has been the on-site establishment of not-for-profit Free Animal Doctor, which began operating a small animal veterinary clinic in Santa Anita's parking lot 7 this past September.

“Free Animal Doctor (FAD) has been a great addition for us,” said Siberell.  “Our backside community is populated by hundreds of animal lovers and FAD recently performed 30 low cost spay and neuter procedures, primarily for those folks that work in the Stable Area.  FAD is going to be partnering soon with the Pasadena Humane Society, so their positive impact on the community at large is going to become even greater.”

In terms of fund raising activities, in the month of November alone, Santa Anita has hosted a Drive-in Movie Night for the Sierra Madre-based Gooden School (K-8), a Family Gratitude Drive Through Event for Highland Oaks (middle school) PTSA/Arcadia, a Food Distribution Event for Girl Scouts of America/Arcadia, a Crystal Ball Fundraiser Drive-Through for the (Arcadia) Methodist Hospital Foundation and a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills, sponsored by the Fellowship Monrovia Church.

Santa Anita has always served as a year-round Driver Training facility for the Arcadia Fire Department and has traditionally provided acreage for Rose Parade Band training for out-of-town universities.  This past December, Pasadena City College and the Alhambra Unified School District also came to Santa Anita to help train their respective bands in advance of Pasadena's annual New Year's Day extravaganza.

This past February, Santa Anita facilitated Driver Training for the Sierra Madre Fire Department and did the same for Monrovia Fire July.

Additionally, Santa Anita assisted the LA County Sanitation Department this past August as they hosted an E-Waste collection event in the track's Infield parking lot.

Santa Anita To Provide Home For Non-Profit ‘Free Animal Doctor’

With an estimated 25 percent of America's pet owners unable to afford necessary veterinary care for approximately 24 million dogs and cats, Santa Anita Park will now provide a home for the non-profit Free Animal Doctor, which provides free veterinary surgeries for at-risk animals. Santa Anita management will also be working with Free Animal Doctor to extend its services to the track's backside community and other community groups in need, at no or low cost.

“There is a need for this type of small animal veterinary assistance locally and nationwide,” said Santa Anita's Aidan Butler, Acting Executive Director, CA Racing Operations for The Stronach Group. “We are well positioned to provide the assistance needed for the Free Animal Doctor clinic to administer necessary care for these precious animals, and we're honored to do so. We've let them know we are here to help in any way that we can.”

Free Animal Doctor (FAD), utilizes Crowdfunding to raise monies for specific pets and provides detailed itemized cost accounting which is directed by each animal's attending veterinarian.

“This serves to self-authenticate the cost of each surgery,” said FAD co-founder Sam Bernardo, who hopes to have FAD's veterinary “bus” fully operational in Santa Anita's parking Lot 7 by Sept. 15. “Once the money is raised for each individual animal's procedure, no additional money is accepted.”

Although a wide variety of surgeries will be performed, spaying and neutering will comprise the majority of the procedures taking place at Santa Anita. This important work also helps to assist community shelters from being overwhelmed by dogs and cats that do not have homes.

Bernardo, who is a practicing attorney, founded FAD four years ago with Ryan Boyd, who works in the local real estate industry.

“Our 'bus' is actually a 43-foot long mobile surgical hospital on a bus frame,” said Bernardo. “The facility was originally designed and used by the Spay, Neuter Action Program of San Diego. They donated it to us and we are so thankful that Santa Anita is providing us a home with independent sources of electricity and water, which are vital for surgical procedures.

“We've been operating for four years now and 80 percent of the animals that we've displayed on our website have gotten the required funding. With average costs ranging from $800 to $3,000, thirty percent of families that own these pets cannot afford the surgeries.”

Those interested are encouraged to visit FAD's website at www.freeanimaldoctor.org, where a photo and detailed description of each at-risk pet is provided.
