Group 1 Fillies Star At Arqana December

DEAUVILLE, France-the sales caravan has rolled into its final stop of the season, the European bloodstock community having made its annual descent upon Deauville, France over the past two days for the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale. With an expected deluge of rain remaining at bay through the first part of Friday, the usual suspects from across Europe and further afield were out of full force inspecting the cross section of fillies, broodmares and foals that will take their turns in the ring beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

“People seem very happy with the horses we have here,” said Arqana's Executive Director Freddy Powell. “It's always a good sign when agents that have been here for the last couple of days tell you that their clients, that were not supposed to come, are coming because of the shortlists that they're sending. So it's all positive.”

Arqana December has gone from strength to strength over the past decade, with last year's edition staged in the midst of the pre-vaccine pandemic one of a few exceptions to its straight upward trajectory. Last year's sale still nonetheless returned satisfactory results in the circumstances, and with the quality of the catalogue assembled it is guaranteed there will be more than few fierce bidding battles over the weekend.

“The market has been very strong at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland, and in Newmarket and Goffs as well,” said Powell. “Hopefully we'll be able to be on the same lines. There is a great demand for horses, at the top level in particular. Maybe the economy of the past two years has caused people to put some nice stock on the market, and nice stock is rare, so if you can get it in your sale it's quite good.”

In G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) and G1 Prix de l'Opera scorer Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}), Arqana offers the only current-year Group 1-winning fillies to grace a European breeding stock sale in 2021. Indeed, Arqana has firmly established its reputation as a reliable marketplace for black-type fillies from across the continent, and in addition to Grand Glory and Rougir buyers will have the chance to take home the likes of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Speak Of The Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}); last year's G2 Airlie Stud S. winner and G1 Phoenix S. third Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}); Listed Prix Panacee winner Rumbles Of Thunder (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), a descendant of champion American filly White Star Line; Criterium Arqana victress Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), who was also third in the G1 Criterium International; this year's G3 Princess Elizabeth S. winner Parent's Prayer (Ire) (Kingman {GB}); and 2020 listed winner and Group 3-placed Emoji (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}).

“We have some great race fillies here and it's very satisfying to see the likes of Rougir and Grand Glory, who were traveling not long ago; Grand Glory only came back two days ago from Japan and she looks great,” Powell said. “There are a few different marketplaces in the world where those fillies would have also done well, but I think vendors do understand that there are places that make sense to sell these fillies.”

Arqana has likewise built up momentum at its December Sale in successfully selling German fillies, and as such there is another strong presence in this year's catalogue from that nation.

A handful of bidders last week missed out on Waldlied (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) when Graham Smith-Bernal bought out partner Gestut Ammerland for a sale-topping 2.2-million gns at Tattersalls, and Dietrich von Boetticher's Ammerland brings Waldlied's 3-year-old three-quarter sister Wildfeder (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 188) to Deauville. They are out of the excellent producer Waldlerche (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), whose crown jewel is the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe scorer Waldgeist (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Another from the family on offer is Domaine de l'Etang's 14-year-old mare Waldjagd (GB) (Observatory) (lot 175), who was second in the G2 Diana-Trial, has produced two stakes winners and is in foal to first-season sire Hello Youmzain (Ire).

Ronald Rauscher topped last year's December Sale with the 4-year-old filly Durance (Ger) (Champs Elysees {GB}), who was bought by Bryant Prentice's Pursuit of Success for €750,000, and Rauscher this year brings 4-year-old filly Deia (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) (lot 202), a stakes-winning full-sister to Group 1 winner Dschingis Secret (Ger); and Amabelle (Ger) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) (lot 193), the dam of G2 Diana-Trial winner Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) carrying a full sibling. Marwell Park offers the listed-winning Tickle Me Green (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) (lot 204) on behalf of Gestut Gorlsdorf in foal for the first time to Oasis Dream (GB), while Haras d'Ombreville offers the well-related listed winning and group performer Schwesterherz (Fr) (Areion {Ger}) (lot 179) on behalf of trainer Henk Grewe. Other standouts with German connections include group winners Jin Jin (Ire) (Canford Cliffs{Ire}) (lot 142) and No Limit Credit (Ger) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 158) from trainer Andreas Suborics; last year's G2 German 1000 Guineas winner Lancade (GB) (lot 167); Group 3-winning 3-year-old filly Reine D'Amour (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) (lot 198); and the Group 3-placed Tangut (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) (lot 155), a half-sister to the dam of Arc winner Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) whose third dam is the great producer Allegretta.

“We're quite present in Germany; [Arqana's Head Of Bloodstock] Ludovic Cornuel spends a lot of time there and we've done very well with horses in training in particular for German clients,” said Powell.

The sale also features a selection of black-type broodmares including Mishhar (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) (lot 11), the dam of G2 Royal Lodge S. winner New Mandate (Ire) (New Bay) who is from the immediate family of dual Classic winner Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and in foal to first-crop covering sire Ghaiyyath (Ire); the well-related group winner Samba Brazil (Ger) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 82) in foal to Le Havre (Ire); the stakes-winning and producing Persona Grata (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) (lot 170) in foal to Night Of Thunder; and the Group 2-winning Satomi (Ger) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 177) in foal to Lope De Vega (Ire). There is a high-class selection of mares in foal to first-crop covering sire Sottsass (Fr), the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner who himself cost €340,000 as an Arqana August yearling. They include Sarvana (Fr) (Dubai Destination) (lot 80), the dam of the Group 2-winning and multiple Group 1-placed Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}); G3 Premio Dormello winner Noblesse Oblige (Ity) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) (lot 81); and Landikusic (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) (lot 116), a winning full-sister to Zoffany (Ire).

As the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale has gone from strength to strength, a constant presence has been the consignments from Wertheimer et Frere and the Aga Khan Studs, from which breeders perennially source future stakes producers. Wertheimer et Frere's 2021 draft of 20 includes the winning 3-year-old filly Ever Pink (Ire) (Anodin) (lot 133), whose second dam is the excellent producer Brooklyn's Dance; Sparklia (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) (lot 138), a winning half-sister to four stakes winners including G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and G2 Prix de Sandringham scorer Impassable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}); Panthere (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 194), a winning half-sister to G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Queen's Jewel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}); and Frontgate (War Front) (lot 207), a stakes-placed 3-year-old from the family of Group 1 winners Green Tune (Fr) (Green Desert) and Pas De Reponse (Danzig).

The Aga Khan's 40-horse draft includes Visoriyna (Fr) (Dansili {GB}) (lot 127), a stakes-placed half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning stayer Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) in foal to Persian King (GB); the unraced Ebiyanza (More Than Ready) (lot 149), a half-sister to multiple group winner Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) and listed winner Edisa (Kitten's Joy); and Daladia (Medaglia d'Oro) (lot 216), who is from the immediate family G1 Prix de l'Opera winner Dalkala.

The Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale likewise has an excellent record for selling future Group 1 winners as foals, with Cartier 2-year-old champion Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), 2021 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches victress Coeursamba (Fr) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), 2021 G2 King Edward VII S. winner Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Rougir, who cost just €14,000 in 2018, among the current stars. Among this year's standout foals on paper are a full-brother to Coeursamba (lot 145) and a half-brother to Alenquer, by The Grey Gatsby (Ire) (lot 136); a Wootton Bassett half-brother to dual Group 3 scorer Lesstalk In Paris (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) (lot 111); a Sea The Stars (Ire) filly out of the listed-winning Volshka (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) (lot 129); Lope De Vega (Ire) half-brothers to group winners Zonza (Fr) (Alex The Winner) (lot 161) and Bourree (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) (lot 215); a Kingman (GB) colt out of the aforementioned Waldjagd; a Frankel (GB) half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper) and multiple group winner Castellar (Fr) (American Post {GB}) (lot 206), and another Frankel colt out of Castellar herself (lot 226).

The Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale's select session begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. The action also kicks off at 10 a.m. on Sunday, and at 11 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

Arqana Back In Business With August Highlight

DEAUVILLE, France–As the first full day of showing got underway for Arqana's August Yearling Sale, the sales grounds gradually filled as visitors arrived from Britain and Ireland, along with a planeload of agents and owners who came straight to Normandy from Saratoga.

As if to welcome France's premier sale back to its rightful slot in the calendar, the sun also made an appearance as Arqana prepared to bring the curtain up on the European yearling season. The three-day auction begins its run on Saturday, with two select evening sessions after racing concludes next door at the Hippodrome La Touques followed by Monday's 1pm kick-off for the final, longer session.

Last year's edition, rebranded as the Select Sale when pandemic restrictions meant it had to be postponed to September, was as ebullient as any of its August predecessors and featured three seven-figure yearlings, led by Ecurie des Monceaux's predictable headline-grabber, the Dubawi (Ire) half-sister to Arc winner Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and multiple Grade 1 winner Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), who sold for €2.5 million. Now known as Pure Dignity (GB), the chestnut filly is in training in Newmarket with Roger Varian for HH Shaikh Nasser Al Khalifa and KHK Racing.

There is no yearling from her illustrious dam Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the catalogue this year, but we can once again expect the team behind Ecurie des Monceaux to play a leading role at France's premier yearling auction. Its 38-strong draft will be one of the first to take to the ring when it offers lot 3, a Lope De Vega (Ire) half-brother to the G1 Haskell Invitational winner Coil (Point Given) and G1 Hollywood Derby winner Chiropractor (Kitten's Joy).

The Lepeudry family's Elevage de Tourgeville has been well represented by graduates on the international stage in recent years including the likeable Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Lily's Candle (Fr) (Style Vendome {Fr}), and the latter's half-sister by Frankel (GB) appears early in the Saturday session as lot 16.

“This is the diamond for us, there are not many chances to have a Frankel around the farm,” said Felix Lepeudry, who returned to his family's stud in January following stints in Newmarket as assistant trainer to both Roger Varian and Marco Botti.”

Further top-class claims close-up in the family are made by Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), whose four Group/Grade 1 wins include the Arima Kinen and the Cox Plate and who shares her grandam, the Tourgeville foundation mare Miller's Lily (Fr), with this filly.

In yard B, an elegant grey daughter of Galileo (Ire) drew plenty of admirers, and it was not just for the fact that she is one of four yearlings by the late champion sire. Lot 120, offered by her breeder Haras de Montaigu, is also a half-sister to the 2017 Derby winner Wings Of Eagles (Ire), and she is not the only sibling to a Classic winner catalogued for this weekend. Haras du Logis St Germain presents lot 111, a Ribchester (Ire) half-sister to the farm's 2020 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Dream And Do (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who is now among the broodmare band at Japan's Northern Farm and is also from the immediate family of treble Group 1-winning miler Charm Spirit (Ire).

Just a few doors down from the Ribchester filly in T yard is a Kingman (GB) filly (lot 62) bred by Jose Delmotte's Haras d'Haspel who boasts one of the best updates in the book. The statuesque filly is the third foal of the Observatory (GB) mare Needleleaf (GB), a sister to Juddmonte's G1 Haycock Sprint Cup winner African Rose (GB), and is a half-sister to Godolphin's recent G2 Superlative S winner Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Among a slightly larger and well presented draft from Ballylinch Stud is one of the sale's rarities, a filly by Shadai Stud's Lord Kanaloa (JPN), whose offspring include the outstanding dual G1 Japan Cup and G1 Tenno Sho victrix Almond Eye (JPN). In early as lot 19, the Merry Fox Stud-bred filly is the second foal of the GIII Robert G Dick Memorial S winner Guilty Twelve (Giant's Causeway), whose first foal is a filly by Deep Impact (JPN).

Arqana's Freddy Powell, who flew back in with the American clients from Saratoga on Wednesday, pointed to the diversity of this year's catalogue. He said, “Our advertising campaign says 'More than just business as usual', and we really feel we have a very strong band of horses. There are a lot of new families in the catalogue–pedigrees that we are not usually selling in Deauville–and I think that is a wonderful advertisement for the investment of the French breeders over the last few years.”

He added, “Of course there are the big names like Etreham and Monceaux but there are a number of other farms who have invested to buy mares and fillies and they are sending them to good stallions around Europe. We are all quite excited about it.

We had about 55 people on the plane, including around 25 American agents or owners. Travelling has not been fun in the last year and we wanted to make it easy for everyone, to create some positive dynamism and make it easier for people to invest.”

Free Robert!

Following Hubie de Burgh's tale in yesterday's TDN of the prominent bloodstock agent who was thrown in the clink overnight some years ago for flicking the vees at the flics, Robert Nataf decided to out himself as the agent in question and provided a clarification of the story.

“I actually did it twice, each time the police drove past, and then I hid under the table,” he recalled of the incident which took place 21 years ago. “Then Paul Webber told them where I was hiding and they took me away.”

Nataf even has a fond memento of his run in with the law framed in his office after Webber launched a 'Free Robert' campaign and got his colleagues to sign up to the cause.

Listening in to the account, Charlie Gordon-Watson promised an even more lurid story for tomorrow's TDN. Watch this space.

Breeze-up Evolution Continues With Classy Arqana Offering

DONCASTER, UK–On paper, there has been clear evidence over a number of years that the breeze-up sector has collectively raised its game when it comes to the quality of product on offer. Many of the 2-year-olds who will pass through the ring in Doncaster on Friday for the relocated and slightly delayed Arqana Breeze-Up Sale would not have looked out of place in an elite yearling sale. The advantage for potential buyers now is that they don't just have the chance to watch the horses walk up and down, but can also peruse them at pace, whether they were present for Wednesday's breeze session, or watching online across the Atlantic.

Plenty of horses in the catalogue have hailed from across the sea, including two sons of American Pharoah plucked from Keeneland's September Sale. The first to be offered, lot 19, is a colt from the family of multiple top-flight winner Falbrav (Ire) (Fairy King) out of the winning War Front mare Heavenly Thought, who is consigned by Willie Browne's Mocklershill team. Later in the session, Grove Stud–regularly the leading consignor at this event–offers another colt (lot 76) by the Triple Crown winner, the second foal of the GIII Santa Barbara H winner Queen Of The Sand (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).

The sole Galileo (Ire) catalogued has been withdrawn, but Oak Tree Farm has the only Dubawi (Ire) juvenile in the sale, a colt from Kirsten Rausing's top-drawer family which has already enjoyed plenty of stakes success around the world in 2021.

Lot 130 is a son of treble listed winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the 2-year-old's half-sister A La Voile (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has embellished the immediate family further since the catalogue was printed, picking up some black type with her third-place finish in the listed Rothesay S. last week.

Freddy Powell, one of a trio of Arqana representatives to have endured the 10-day isolation on arrival in England from France, admitted that expectations are high for the sale despite the ongoing complications presented by the pandemic. He said, “The catalogue is strong and of course nice horses are always a big help. Whatever is happening in the wider economy, if you have a nice horse you have a chance.”

He was also quick to praise the breeze-up consignors, not just for their willingness to adapt and relocate over the last year, but in the expertise they have provided in lifting this sector of the sales scene to heady new heights.

Powell continued, “They are wonderful horsemen. Getting a horse ready for the breeze-up is one thing, and they are very talented at doing that, but they are also very good yearling buyers as well. So they buy a nice horse to start with and then do a good job bringing them to the breeze-up before they go on to win good races. But firstly they buy a nice horse, because that's their living.”

An early highlight may be provided by one of the Gaybrook Lodge Stud draft (lot 16) in the Siyouni (Fr) half-brother to Godolphin's talented stayer Ispolini (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The colt's dam Giant's Play (Giant's Causeway) was more than useful herself, winning the GII New York S., and she has already produced three black-type performers among her five winners. Her dam Playful Act (GB) (Sadler's Wells) is herself a daughter of the celebrated matriarch Magnificient Style (Silver Hawk), making her a three-parts-sister to the Group 1 winners Nathaniel (Ire) and Great Heavens (Ire), both of whom are by Galileo (Ire).

Another with a page with plenty of depth, class and stamina is Church Farm & Horse Park Stud's son of New Bay (GB) (lot 136) out of a multiple-winning half-sister to Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), while the second foal of the Irish 1000 Guineas winner Jet Setting (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}), a colt by Dark Angel (Ire), is consigned by Star Bloodstock as lot 22.

“It has been an evolution over the last few years, the quality of the horses they are buying,” Powell said. “I think a lot of pinhookers have realised that buying a lot of horses more cheaply and trying to make money out of them is not a business model that works well in a polarised market. And now that means that there is a lot of interest from buyers who were not buying breeze-up horses 10 years ago but who are now very active in the breeze-up market.”

He added, “Not only from Arqana but from the 2-year-old sales in general, the results on the track are now very impressive.”

Goffs UK has already conducted its own breeze-up sale this season and it was one which set new records for average and median as well as a clearance rate of 89%. Arqana will be hoping to build on its own records of last year, albeit from a much reduced catalogue when the sale had to be pushed back to July. Powell acknowledged the help that has been provided by their allies at Goffs, who have not only provided the location but a number of key personnel for the sale to take place.

He said, “Even before we had to make the call to ask to come here the Goffs team had already offered their help. It was a natural thing that they did straight away and that's really heartwarming. Eric [Hoyeau, Arqana president] and I have been working with the Goffs team for many years through the old Goffs France so we have good friends here and it was a natural partnership.”

The sale, which will feature around 130 lots after withdrawals, gets underway in Doncaster at 11am.

Arqana Renews Naas Sponsorship

For a second consecutive year, Arqana will sponsor the Listed Irish EBF Marwell S. at Ireland's Naas Racecourse July 21.

The inaugural Marwell S., contested in early August 2020, was won by the Ken Condon-trained Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}), who won the G2 Lowther S. in her next appearance before placing in the G1 Cheveley Park Stud S. and in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf.

The announcement comes ahead of next week's Arqana Breeze-Up Sale, which has been relocated from Deauville to Doncaster due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are delighted to renew our partnership with Naas Racecourse, which provides a great opportunity to showcase Arqana in Ireland,” the company's executive director Freddy Powell said. “The country has a very important place in the industry, both for breeding and racing, and it is a way for us to thank the Irish buyers and vendors who put their confidence in us throughout the year by being present at the Deauville sales. Many pinhookers will offer 2-year-olds at the Breeze-Up next week, several of whom invested in them as yearlings at Arqana.”

Added Eamonn McEvoy, general manager of Naas Racecourse: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Arqana, a sales company that continue to go from strength to strength judged on the calibre of graduates coming from their sales. Arqana is a globally recognized power house, a brand Naas Racecourse are very proud to partner with. The team at Arqana are wonderful to work with and we thank them for their continued support.”
