Dettori Memorabilia Auction Led By Signed Oaks Trophy

The online sale of 126 racing items from jockey Frankie Dettori's private collection–offered by Cheffins in Cambridge from July 5 through July 18–was highlighted by a trophy from his victory aboard Soul Sister in last month's Betfred Oaks. Likely his final career Classic victory, the signed trophy brought £5,000 from an undisclosed U.K. buyer.

Also sold were a pair of signed boots from a race in Saudi Arabia for £2,800, a signed racing saddle used by Dettori at Epsom for £1,400 and a set of the royal blue Godolphin silks which went for £4,600 to a buyer from Japan. Dettori's weighing scales, which were given to him by Steve Cauthen and which Dettori claims he has been “jumping on and off for over 30 years”, were sold for £550.

The 52-year-old, who retires at the end of this season, indicated some of the proceeds of the auction–which are estimated to total over £75,000–will go to the charity Direct Aid For Africa (Dafa), and some will go to his five children.

Captain Dettori Steps Up For Shergar Cup

In his final year of riding, Frankie Dettori will captain the European team at Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Twelve jockeys from eight countries will take part in the unique team contest, with Dettori set to be joined by Olivier Peslier and Kazakh-born Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, the multiple champion jockey in Germany who is now stable jockey to Andre Fabre.

“The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is always a fun event and I was keen to be involved in my final year riding,” said Dettori.

“Ascot does an excellent job attracting some of the biggest names from around the world, while the prize-money and incentives for owners, trainers and stable staff are fantastic. I like the look of our team. Myself and Olivier were on the winning side in 2014 and hopefully we can repeat the feat this year.”

The GB & Ireland team consists of captain Luke Morris, Tom Marquand and Declan McDonogh, while Hayley Turner, the most successful rider at the Shergar Cup, will be joined by Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne on the Ladies team.

Hong Kong star Vincent Ho returns as captain of Rest of the World, and is joined by Brazil's Joao Moreira and Kazuo Yokoyama, a multiple Group 1 winner in Japan.

With owners benefiting from free entry for their horses, each race at the Shergar Cup is worth £80,000, with prize-money down to 10th place. There is a further £25,000 available in bonuses split between the day's three leading trainers and their staff.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot, said, “With the continued support of Dubai Duty Free, we are delighted to unveil one of our strongest and most varied lineups of jockeys for this year's Shergar Cup.

“Frankie is captaining Europe as part of his farewell tour, while it's great to welcome back Vincent Ho, who has made such an impression when riding in the UK previously.

“We are also excited to have Joao Moreira pencilled in for his third Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup appearance, in what could be his final year in the saddle. There will be debuts for Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, Luke Morris, Tom Marquand, Saffie Osborne and Kazuo Yokoyama.

“Of course, no Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup would be complete without Hayley Turner, who has such a tremendous record at Ascot and is synonymous with this event.”

Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Dubai Duty Free, added, “Once again the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will deliver a line-up of international stars who will have the opportunity to shine on one of horseracing's greatest stages.

“I am delighted that Frankie has chosen the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup as one of his final showcase events in the UK and we can expect the competition to be as fierce as ever.”

Frankie Dettori And His Manager, Peter Burrell, Part Ways

Jockey Frankie Dettori and his manager of over 30 years, Peter Burrell, will no longer be working together according to published reports.

Dettori, who is retiring at the end of the year, began working with Burrell in 1987, besides a brief split in 2007 and 2008. Dettori's career has been highlighted by a trio of champion jockey titles and big-race wins on an international scale, but also for his 'Magnificent Seven', where he won all seven races at Ascot in 1996. Besides assisting Dettori with his storied career on the track, Burrell has also aided the Italian with his career away from the races. Among other projects, the jockey released a film, Dettori, in 2021.

Burrell told The Sun, “I've not too much to say other than we both felt that we wanted to explore other avenues. I have other projects that I now want to spend more time on and I'm looking forward to it. It's been a great thirty year run and we remain great friends.”

Murphy To Replace Dettori Aboard Chaldean In Sunday’s Prix Jean Prat

Oisin Murphy will take over from the suspended Frankie Dettori aboard 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville.

Dettori will miss the ride after receiving a nine-day careless riding ban at Royal Ascot last month and that suspension will also rule him out of riding Emily Upjohn in the Coral-Eclipse on Saturday.

Murphy has never ridden Chaldean in public before but Barry Mahon, racing manager for Juddmonte, the owners of the top-notch colt, said once the Irishman was available to replace Dettori, connections were left with a straightforward decision.

“If everything is going okay with the horse and Andrew [Balding, trainer] is happy with him, the plan will hopefully be to run at Deauville and, as far as I am aware, Oisin Murphy will take the ride,” Mahon told the Nick Luck Daily Podcast.

He added, “Oisin is a top-class jockey and is part of Andrew's stable and we'll be delighted to have him on board. [Chaldean is] good, he came out of Ascot in great form and has only had two runs this year so is relatively fresh and he's in good shape.”
