£400k Raised During Royal Ascot at Home

A total of £400,000 was raised by frontline charities during Royal Ascot this year. Approximately £166,000 was contributed by the #StyledWithThanks programme, and Ascot Racecourse’s direct fundraising benefitted The NationalEmergencies Trust Relief Fund, NH Charities Together, The Care Workers Charity and the Berkshire Community Foundation Coronavirus Fund. Prizes were awarded for Most Elegant, Most Uplifting and Most Original as judged by a panel of fashion industry experts. An online auction of rainbow-themed hats-in partnership with the British Hat Guild-generated £24,000, and the campaign was given another £30,000 boost when 2020 Royal Ascot Champion Jockey Frankie Dettori signed and donated his commemorative ’70th Royal Ascot win’ saddlecloth. Other charitable contributions were raised by the sale of 2020 Ascot Jockey Bears, a £5 donation from the sale of each Royal Ascot Afternoon Tea and 20% of sales from the new Ascot Wine Club. Betting and Gaming council members, among them many of the UK’s leading bookmakers also pledged £250,000 to be distributed between Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie, The Care Workers Charity and the Berkshire Community Foundation Coronavirus Fund around an initiative that centred on the Britannia S. on Gold Cup Day. Jockeys riding on the final day of Royal Ascot donated all of their riding fees.

“We are delighted with the response of the public and the racing, betting and fashion industries to all the charitable initiatives that took place during and around Royal Ascot,” said Ascot Racecourse Director of Racing & Public Affairs. “The rainbow montage tribute of photos sent in as part of our #StyledWithThanks campaign will be a permanent reminder of the year when all elements of what makes Royal Ascot so special came together to support a range of national and local charities.”

French Aim For English King

A day removed from the G1 Investec Derby, trainer Ed Walker said English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), fifth as the early favourite, had come out of the race well and could target the G1 Grand Prix de Paris in September.

“We’ll let the dust settle and mull over it for a few days,” Walker said. “I think an obvious target would be the Grand Prix de Paris, because he’s French-bred and qualifies for the premiums. I wouldn’t rule out the St Leger, but I wouldn’t want to run him on ground any slower than it was at Epsom–rattling quick ground and a nice, even tempo is his gig.”

Walker said he was disappointed with how the race played out, but not with his horse.

“He’s come out of the race good,” he said. “It was an unsatisfactory race, from our point of view, but fair play to the winner [Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}]–he’s obviously a very good, well-bred horse who got loose on the front end and won well on the day. I’m very proud of our horse. It was frustrating, because there’s only one Derby and it didn’t go our way, but I’m pleased with the way he ran and excited for the future.

“We were never going to ride him aggressively. I thought Frankie [Dettori] gave him a very good ride, and I have no regrets whatsoever. I think if you ran the race 10 times he might come out on top a few times, but it wasn’t to be. He finished faster than any other horse in the race, and hopefully there are big days ahead for him.”

Dettori reflected on Sunday afternoon, “I was trying to put a brave face on, but when Ed told me I was drawn one I knew we had a mountain to climb.

“As the stalls opened he jumped left and then I was playing catch up, basically. I was relying on Mogul and Ryan [Moore], the one horse I thought I had to beat, to take me into the race but coming round Tattenham Corner he couldn’t lay up. I had Oisin [Murphy, on Kameko] and Ryan in my reach, but the winner had gone and I think the winner’s was a good performance. I wasn’t far away from being second and perhaps if things had gone better I’d have been second or third.

“It was just one of those things, the Derby is like that, and I think the horse has got a nice future.”

Champion Racemare Enable On Target To Begin 2020 Campaign In Sunday’s Coral-Eclipse

Star mare Enable is on course to begin her 2020 campaign with a defense her Coral-Eclipse crown this Sunday at Sandown, but it will be no easy task with an eye catching field unveiled at the entry stage on Monday.

The 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel will be partnered by regular rider Frankie Dettori for trainer John Gosden, and faces a likely field of seven other talented contenders.

Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup winner Ghaiyyath, who beat both 2019 Investec Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck and Stradivarius at Newmarket. looks the principle challenger on paper.

However, the supporting cast is littered with talent, including Enable's stablemate Lord North. John Gosden's colt has risen through the handicap ranks all the way to winning the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes a fortnight ago at Royal Ascot in impressive fashion.

Japan, who disappointed that day, but has a Juddmonte International win to his name, is also slated to take his chance. And the field is given an International flavor as Group 1-winning Japanese-superstar mare Deirdre in the line-up.

Magic Wand, Regal Reality and Bangkok make up the entry list.

Classic Winner Kameko Tops 17 Early Entrants For Saturday’s Investec Derby

QIPCO 2,000 Guineas hero Kameko was the headline act amongst the 17 entries submitted Monday for Saturday's Group 1 Investec Derby at Epsom, as he seeks to double up his Classic success.

The son of Kitten's Joy will be partnered by regular rider Oisin Murphy for trainer Andrew Balding.

The pair look to face a stiff challenge, most notably from impressive Lingfield Derby-trial winner English King, who will be the mount of Frankie Dettori. He won't be the only threat, however.

As is customary, Aidan O'Brien has entered a sizeable raiding team from Ireland including Mogul, Vatican City and Royal Ascot hero Russian Emperor. It will be fascinating to see which mount their number one rider Ryan Moore will be on board, and Saturday's impressive nine-length maiden winner Serpentine is among the possibilities.

Fairy-tale entrant Pyledriver will aim to complete his own Cinderella story; having been unsold at 10,000 guineas at the sales as a 2-year-old, before winning at Royal Ascot a fortnight ago. Veteran rider Martin Dwyer partners him, and will be looking to emulate his win in the race 14 years ago aboard Sir Percy.

Amhran Na Bhfiann, Armory, Emissary, Gold Maze, Highland Chief, Khalifa Set, Max Vega, Mohican Heights, Mythical, Serpentine and Worthily complete the entries.

In the Investec Oaks Aidan O'Brien holds a strong hand with four entrants – Peaceful, Passion, Ennistymon and most notably QIPCO 1000 Guineas heroine Love.

She could face up to 10 rivals, with hugely impressive Ribblesdale Stakes winner Frankly Darling appearing the most dangerous contender; especially as she's being handled by the red-hot Frankie Dettori and John Gosden partnership.

Bharani Star, Dubai Love, Gold Wand, Oriental Mystique, Queen Daenerys and Tiempo Vuela make up the other entries.
