Enable Faces Ballydoyle Trio

It will be a case of Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) versus Ballydoyle and Galileo (Ire) in Saturday’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot, but she’s been there before and connections are confident that the star mare is back in the right spot after her defeat in the July 5 G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown. John Gosden is expecting that comeback effort to have put her right for her historic bid for a third renewal of this prestige affair.

“I was very open with everybody that, being the age she is now, she’s found it difficult getting to race-fitness, more than ever before,” he explained. “So she’s found that challenging, but has a strong mind and has brought herself forward with the race to bring her on. She’s got older and wiser as she’s gone, but I feel she’s back in the zone now. I’m of the viewpoint that a Flat horse reaches its zenith aged five, so I still see her training beautifully for this. I just went with her ahead of the Eclipse and her work on the Limekilns has been perfect since. I’ve let her lead a couple of works too and she’s enjoyed that for a change.”

With two Derby winners in Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) and Sovereign (Ire) backing up the G1 Juddmonte International and G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Japan (GB) in the three-pronged Galileo attack, Gosden is aware that tactics could play a part but is happy to let Dettori take control of that aspect.

“Frankie likes to try and train her too, but I won’t try and ride her as well,” he added. “You have to go in with a blank canvass really and see how it pans out and see what the Ballydoyle horses do. I’ll leave that to the jockey and we’ll not tie anyone down to a plan.”

Top Stayer Stradivarius To Chase Historic Fourth Victory In Goodwood Cup

Stradivarius heads a field of seven runners entered for next weeks Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

The Stayers King has become a household name in the racing world as a whole and next Tuesday he will look to tread where no horse has trodden before – a fourth visit to the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup winner's enclosure.

A record in this race will be another glittering achievement on a CV that already consists of three Gold Cups, two Yorkshire Cups, one Doncaster Cup and one QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup.

Six rivals stand between the much-loved John Gosden-trained chestnut and a fourth victory on the Sussex Downs.

His most serious opponent appears the Aidan O'Brien trained Santiago. The progressive son of Authorized looked very smart when winning the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot before stepping up again to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby last time out.

Other notable runners in the field include Nayef Road who was beaten 10 lengths in to second by Stradivarius in the Gold Cup, and Eagles By Day who ran out a ready winner of the John Smith's Silver Cup at York last weekend.

All eyes, however, will be on one horse as he bids to further cement his name into British racing folk-law.

Lyons Hoping Siskin and Keane Partnership Continues in Sussex

Ger Lyons is increasingly hopeful Colin Keane will opt to maintain his partnership with Siskin (First Defence) in the G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood on Wednesday week–with Frankie Dettori “waiting in the wings” should he opt to stay in Ireland. Former Irish champion Keane has ridden the unbeaten G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas hero in all his career starts, but current rules in Ireland surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic mean he would have to spend 14 days in quarantine on his return home, should he travel to Goodwood.

Lyons, who teamed up with Keane for a second Classic success of the season on Saturday night with Even So in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, told Racing TV’s Luck on Sunday programme: “I’m looking forward to it–the negative is the isolation that we have here in Ireland, but it became very apparent to me last night that these races matter, and matter hugely.

“So I’d be dubious to think Colin won’t partner him. I think, subject to discussing it with Colin and without putting pressure on him, I’d like to think he’ll stay with him and we’ll go to Goodwood together, take a two-week holiday together somewhere green and sunny in Ireland and concentrate on the big races for the rest of the season.

“You’ve got to understand Colin is a young man and is being led by an old trainer with a young head, who hasn’t been here. We’ve to do the right thing, but it’s become apparent, and we’ve a lot of good people advising us, that Siskin is the horse of a lifetime.

“That’s not to say he’ll win the Sussex . by any stretch, he has to beat at least three horses to finish in the three that are rated above him. He’s a long way to go to beat the horses that are lining up in the race, but I wouldn’t swap him.”

On the high-profile substitute if Keane does not ride, Lyons said, “I think they need to stick together, but there’s a very good replacement waiting in the wings if something else happens. It would have to be Frankie [Dettori]. He has a huge association with that outfit [Juddmonte] and he’s the best in the world. He’s there in the wings if we needed him and that would be fantastic too.”

Nunthorpe S. Next for Sceptical

A trip to York for the G1 Nunthorpe S. is the next major target for Sceptical (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) following another excellent effort in defeat in Saturday’s G1 Darley July Cup. Denis Hogan’s 4-year-old has made remarkable progress since opening his account at Dundalk in November–going on to complete a hat-trick at the County Louth venue before landing a listed prize at Naas and finishing a half-length third in the G1 King’s Stand S. at Royal Ascot. With Frankie Dettori keeping the ride at Newmarket, Sceptical this time filled the runner-up spot, 1 1/4 lengths behind the Roger Teal-trained Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}). Hogan reports his stable star to have returned to Ireland none the worse and he will now be prepared for a third tilt at Group 1 glory in the Coolmore-sponsored feature on Aug. 21.

“He was back home yesterday [Sunday] and he seems to come out of the race well. He was a bit tired from all the travelling, but he’s good and sound, which is the main thing,” said the Tipperary-based trainer. “At the moment the plan is to go for the Nunthorpe. Frankie felt coming back to five [furlongs] would suit, which obviously means we’ll have to take on Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), but we’ll probably give it a go.

“There is a Group 3 at The Curragh on Aug. 9–the Phoenix Sprint S. We’ll just see how he is over the next few days and then decide whether to run him there first or just go straight to York.

“After the Nunthorpe you’ve got the Flying Five back at the Curragh [Sept. 13] and Frankie mentioned the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye at ParisLongchamp, but the obvious worry with that race would be the ground can come up pretty soft. There are plenty of options and it’s just a case of picking out the right races for him.”
