Frankel’s Inspiral Dominates Sandown Feature

Cheveley Park Stud's homebred 2-year-old filly Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a daughter of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk), overcame a slow start to prevail in a June 26 maiden going seven furlongs at Newmarket on debut last time and laid down a marker with an impressive 3 1/2-length win in Thursday's Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Star S. over the same trip at Sandown. Anchored at the tail of the field after a deliberate break, the even-money favourite made rapid headway on the bridle in the straight and powered clear once gaining the upper hand approaching the final furlong to outclass her eight rivals in taking fashion. At the line, she was clear of Godolphin's dual winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) with a neck back to her stablemate Sunstrike (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third.

“She's always been a classy filly and has just done normal work on the bridle at home,” explained winning trainer John Gosden after claiming a first win in the contest. “Her mother was with us, and she had a lot of ability, and we know all about the father. We thought this was the race to come for, they went pretty strong up front and she won very nicely. Frankie [Dettori] was out the back before coming around them and said he hit the front far too soon. I think it was a pretty hot event and she's not been in front like that before so she did well. She'll have no problem getting a mile and we'll go one step at a time. The [G2] May Hill S. at Doncaster would be an obvious place to go and gives her five or six weeks between races.”

Inspiral is one of four winners from as many runners produced by G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk), herself a half-sister to Listed Rosemary S. victrix Solar Magic (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Starscope, who is out of a half-sister to MG1SW sire Medicean (GB) (Machiavellian), has also produced last term's Listed Cocked Hat S. third Celestran (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and a weanling colt by Siyouni (Fr). Inspiral's MGSP third dam Mystic Goddess (Storm Bird), who annexed the Listed Sweet Solera S., is a half-sister to G1 Gran Criterium-winning sire Sanam (Golden Act) and MG1SP dual Group 2 winner Shaybani (Al Nasr {Fr}).

‘Time Is Precious!’: Dettori Hoping US-Trained Extravangant Kid Can Land Him Elusive July Cup Victory

Jockey Frankie Dettori is hoping Extravagant Kid can finally fill the only major gap on his British racing CV by landing the Darley July Cup on Saturday (July 10th) at Newmarket.

The six furlong contest is the only domestic Group One race the 50 year old has yet to win, although he has ridden the runner-up on three occasions – Iffraaj (2006), Advertise (2019) and Sceptical (2020).

Dettori said: “I have been living in Newmarket since 1985 and outside of the Guineas this is our biggest race, so I would of course love to be able to win it. I have won races all over the world and it is this one in my hometown that is proving the most difficult.

“I thought I was finally going to do it a couple of years ago on Advertise but he was no match for Ten Sovereigns in the finish and Sceptical ran a great race last year.

Hopefully, I can finally get a July Cup winner – I am 50 years old and so time is precious!”

Extravagant Kid is trained by US-based Brendan Walsh and is a 12-1 chance with bet365 for the race. Winner of the Group One Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan, UAE, in March, the eight year old has stayed on in Britain since finishing third on his British debut behind Oxted in the Group One King's Stand Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 15th.

Oxted won the Darley July Cup in 2020 and lines up again on Saturday, when he will bid to become the first back-to-back winner of the prestigious sprint since Right Boy in 1958 and 1959.

Assessing the chances of Extravagant Kid on Saturday, Dettori said: “I am not sure he is the best horse in the race but he is the best ride that I could get.

“Oxted thrashed us at Royal Ascot and we have it all to do to reverse the form with him. However, my horse will like the ground and is an honest performer who stays six furlongs well.

“With 19 runners it should hopefully be a strongly run race which will suit and we are drawn in stall 12, which is quite close to Oxted (drawn 16) and that is hopefully where the pace is going to be.”

Dettori was present at Wembley for Italy's Euro 2020 semi-final victory in a penalty shootout over Spain on Tuesday night, which he described as an “emotional rollercoaster”.

However, he will not be at Wembley for Sunday's final against England. He added: “England are going to have the advantage of having the home crowd on their side on Sunday but unfortunately I won't be able to attend as I am going away for a few days with my wife.

“We booked this a while ago and I owe her some time away after approaching two years when it has not been possible to go on holiday!”

Walsh-Trained Extravagant Kid ‘In His Prime’ Ahead Of Saturday’s Group 1 July Cup

USA-based trainer Brendan Walsh insists it would be “quite something” if he could re-establish his links with Newmarket and saddle Extravagant Kid to glory in the Darley July Cup at Saturday's Moet & Chandon July Festival.

Having spent time working in the town for Godolphin and former trainer Mark Wallace before heading to America, Walsh will now bid to capture the prestigious six furlong Group One on Saturday, July 10 with the globetrotting 8-year-old.

The Kiss The Kid gelding took his form to new heights earlier this year when capturing the Group One Al Quoz Sprint over six furlongs at Meydan in March ahead of finishing third back over five furlongs in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 15.

With a return to six furlongs not expected to pose any problems for Extravagant Kid, who is currently housed at Abingdon Place Stables in Newmarket, the Kentucky-based handler is confident he can make his presence felt.

“I spent a lot of time working in Newmarket back in the day as I worked three or four summers for Godolphin then four years for Mark Wallace before that so I know the place very well,” said Walsh.

“I always liked the July Meeting and it would be quite something if I could go back there and win the July Cup with this lad.

“I don't think going back up to six furlongs will be a negative. Although it is a little stiffer than Dubai, you are going downhill a lot of the way. It is probably as far as he needs to go but I think he will be fine.

“We gave him plenty of time to get over his travelling turnaround but you would think he would be in a better position now having had that run at Ascot.”

Extravagant Kid will again have the services of top jockey Frankie Dettori, who rode the gelding at Royal Ascot.

Up until this year Extravagant Kid had been campaigned exclusively in North America, but Walsh believes his recent spell racing abroad has helped rejuvenate his career.

He added: “The first target this year was Dubai and that worked out well so we thought why not go to Ascot now and now here we are.

“He ran really well at Ascot and justified us taking him there. I think that was a tougher spot than Dubai. He showed he belonged there and I was happy with him.

“Travelling with him is a new dimension and he seems to like it. It has brought out the best in him. As an older horse travelling just adds something a bit different.

“He is eight now and is probably in his prime. He is not going to be up to this standard forever so we will just enjoy it.”

There are 23 confirmations for the Darley July Cup, which takes place over six furlongs on the July Course and forms part of the British Champions Series.

Defending champion Oxted, from the Roger Teal yard, will bid to defend his Darley July Cup crown on the back of tasting victory in the King's Stand Stakes. If successful again in 2021, Oxted would become the first back to back since Right Boy in 1958/1959.

Charlie Appleby is responsible for two entries of Glorious Journey and Jersey Stakes scorer Creative Force.

Ed Walker is represented by impressive Duke Of York Stakes scorer Starman and Came From The Dark, while fellow Lambourn handler Archie Watson is another double handed after leaving in both Glen Shiel and Dragon Symbol.

Lope Y Fernandez could bid to give Aidan O'Brien a record breaking sixth victory in the race, is one of three remaining Irish-trained entrants that remain alongside the Ken Condon-trained Miss Amulet, and Thunder Moon (Joseph O'Brien), winner of the Group One Vincent O'Brien National Stakes last season.

Commonwealth Cup Result Stands

Connections of Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) have lost their appeal to have the colt's disqualification from victory in Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup overturned.

Dragon Symbol and the American-trained filly Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) fought out a thrilling stretch duel in the six furlong contest, with Dragon Symbol crossing the wire a head the better, but the placings were reversed on account of Dragon Symbol bumping Campanelle on numerous occasions during the run and taking her off her line. Stewards on the day deemed the interference was enough to have prevented Campanelle from winning, and a British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel agreed on Thursday.
