Half-Sisters To Poetic Flare And Mother Earth For Goffs Orby

Half-sisters to both of this year's Guineas winners in England have been catalogued for the Goffs Orby Sale, which takes place on Sept. 28 and 29.

A total of 444 yearlings-all of which will be eligible for the Goffs Million, Europe's richest 2-year-old race, in 2022–have been assembled for Ireland's Premier Yearling Sale, which returns this year to its usual home at Goffs's Kildare Paddocks.

Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire})'s half-sister from the first crop of U S Navy Flag will be consigned as lot 120 by Clare Castle Stud, three lots after the half-sister to Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) (lot 117), who is by another Coolmore first-season sire in Sioux Nation and is offered by Whitehall Stud. Mother Earth is herself an Orby graduate, having cost MV Magnier €150,000 in 2019.

Others with Classic connections in the catalogue include a Kingman (GB) filly (lot 29) out of champion 2-year-old filly and dual Guineas winner Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr Greeley) and a Saxon Warrior (Jpn) half-sister to G1 Prix de Diane scorer Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) (lot 110). Both Finsceal Beo and Channel are also Orby graduates. Saxon Warrior is also the sire of a colt (lot 397) out of the recently deceased Cassandra Go (Ire), who is the dam of Classic winner and Group 1 producer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and Group 1 producer Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Lot 347 is a full-brother to champion and Classic winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and a half-brother to G1 Coronation S. winner Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}).

Leading sires Frankel (GB), Galileo (Ire), Siyouni (Fr), Lope De Vega (Ire), Dark Angel (Ire), Dubawi (Ire) and Sea The Stars (Ire) are all represented. There are six catalogued by the late, great Galileo including a filly who is the first foal out of the GI Frizette S.-winning $3-million mare Nickname (Scat Daddy) (lot 152) and a colt out of the dual Group 1 winner and multiple stakes producer Simply Perfect (GB) (Danehill) (lot 242). Lot 408 is a full-sister to G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Persuasive (Ire) and a half-sister to this year's G3 Jersey S. winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), while lot 289, also by Dark Angel, is a full-brother to group winner Angel's Hideaway (Ire).

Lot 338 is a Kingman (GB) colt out of champion mare and stakes producer Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Gold Away), while lot 250, also a Kingman colt, is the first foal out of the stakes-winning and Group 1-placed Snowy Winter (Elusive Quality). Kingman's barnmate Frankel (GB) has four catalogued including lot 377, a half-brother to two group winners and from the family of the Group 1-winning siblings With You (GB), Call The Wind (GB) and We Are (Ire). Lot 216 is a Starspangledbanner (Aus) half-brother to this year's G1 Prix Jean Prat scorer Laws Of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}).

The lure of the Goffs Million should put an added premium on 2-year-old types, and the Goffs Orby catalogue includes a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-brother to last year's G1 Phoenix S. victor Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) (lot 196); a full-sister to this year's G2 Queen Mary S. winner Quick Suzy (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) (lot 247); a Kodiac (GB) three-quarter sister to this year's G2 Norfolk S. winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) (lot 214); and a Footstepsinthesand half-brother to last year's Norfolk winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) (lot 167). Also catalogued are siblings to 2021 2-year-old stakes winners Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {Ire}), Beauty Inspire (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Agartha (Ire) (Caravaggio), as well as a Belardo (Ire) half-brother to last year's G2 Gimcrack S. winner and G1 Middle Park S. third Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) (lot 168).

“We could not be happier to be back in Ireland at Kildare Paddocks for the 2021 Goffs Orby Sale and even more delighted to present an Orby catalogue that is simply unmissable for international buyers,” said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby in announcing the publication of the catalogue on Friday. “We are so grateful to those Irish breeders who have entrusted us with such a strong selection of potential classy winners and have worked with them to focus on the individual so that we can recommend every Orby yearling on merit to potential purchasers.”

He added, “The Goffs Million, with a guarantee of at least €1,000,000 in prize money and a potential €100,000 3-year-old Group 1 bonus, has been met with resounding enthusiasm by prospective buyers, while the success of Orby graduates over the past year has proven once again why Orby is a must-attend event. Another Classic winner in Mother Earth graphically illustrates the point alongside yet more Group 1 winners in the U.S., South Africa, France, Ireland and more Royal Ascot success.

“The Irish National Yearling Sale is back where it belongs, in the right place at the right time, and the Goffs team looks forward to welcoming vendors and buyers to the Orby for a stellar selection of many of the best yearlings Ireland has to offer, and the only candidates for Europe's richest 2-year-old race next year.”

Logician Retired To Shade Oak Stud

Juddmonte's St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Scuffle {GB}, by Daylami {Ire}) has been retired from racing and will take up stallion duties at Shade Oak Stud in Shropshire from 2022.

The 5-year-old has been bought by a partnership with includes Shade Oak's owner Peter Hockenhull, Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning breeder Bryan Mayoh and Grand National-winning trainer Dr Richard Newland. Juddmonte will also retain some breeding rights in the son of the Daylami (Ire) mare Scuffle (GB), a listed-placed treble winner who is a half-sister to the stallions Bated Breath (GB) and Cityscape (GB).

“The purchase of Logician is the culmination of a four-year search to bring another top-class stallion prospect to Shade Oak, one with all the qualities needed in a champion National Hunt sire. Logician ticks every box,” said Peter Hockenhull, who currently stands Dartmouth (GB), Telescope (Ire), Scorpion (Ire) and Recharge (Ire).

He added, “He is by Frankel, the best racehorse I have ever seen and now succeeding his own sire, Galileo, as the world's best stallion, from a black-type mare that has bred six winners from six runners, including four black-type horses, and is herself a half-sister to Cityscape and Bated Breath. He stands 16.2hh with great bone, plenty of strength and substance, a lovely walk and a fantastic temperament.”

Unraced at two, Logician was faultless in a five-start 3-year-old campaign, which saw him break his maiden at Newbury in May over 10 furlongs and culminated in back-to-back wins in the G2 Great Voltigeur S. and G1 St Leger, in which he beat future classy stayers Sir Ron Priestley (GB) and Nayef Road (Ire), as well as subsequent G1 Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet (Ire). He returned to the track almost exactly a year later, having survived a life-threatening attack of peritonitis and pleurisy at the end of his 3-year-old season.

Despite Shade Oak Stud and the horse's new connections being predominantly active in the National Hunt sphere, Hockenhull said that he hopes to encourage Flat breeders to send mares to Logician.

He continued, “I am encouraged that Juddmonte were keen to retain breeding rights in the horse for use on their own mares, so I look forward to some high-class runners by him not only over jumps but also on the Flat. I am extremely grateful to the Abdullah family for supporting British breeding by selling Logician to a stud in this country, and to Grant Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock, whose long-term association with Juddmonte, Prince Khalid's family and this pedigree helped us greatly in this transaction.”

Hockenhull added, “The Great British Bonus and NH Elite Mares Schemes, championed by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association and supported by the Levy Board, are transforming the prospects for British breeders, making it possible for studs here to purchase stallions of the quality of Logician.”

As a 3-year-old, Logician, who became Frankel's first Classic-winning son, earned a Timeform rating of 126p. He won on his comeback at four in a Doncaster conditions race, and has been placed in his only starts this season, in the G3 Al Rayyan S. and listed Fred Archer S.

His former trainer John Gosden said, “Logician was still improving when he won the St Leger, quickening in the style of his sire. We planned a major Group 1 campaign over 10 and 12 furlongs as a 4-year-old–he was that good——but unfortunately illness got in the way. As well as fantastic physique and tremendous stride, Logician has a great mind. Nothing fazes him and he puts everything into his racing. He has all the ingredients to be an outstanding dual-purpose sire.”

Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon added, “From the start, Logician was a special horse, a standout yearling among the Juddmonte crop that year. His size, strength and beautiful action, combined with good conformation, had everyone excited from an early stage and he didn't disappoint. His unbeaten 3-year-old season ended with a dominant victory in the St Leger.

“We have no doubt he was one of the very best middle-distance horses around. Being by Frankel, and given his exceptional physique and performance, Logician is a huge asset to British breeding. Shade Oak have guided many top-class stallions through their careers and I'm sure they have another top-class prospect on their hands.”

A fee for Logician will be announced at a later date.

Frankel Colt Hurricane Lane Adds Second G1 To His Resume In Grand Prix De Paris

The Irish Derby winner, who'd just lost his unbeaten record when third in the Epsom Derby, smashed the field in a hot Grand Prix de Paris (G1) on Wednesday which, probably more than ever, looked like the Derby of all Derbies.

Hurricane Lane (Frankel), for Godolphin, led the field behind the front-runner of the Aidan O'Brien squad, The Mediterranean (Galileo). He came by entering the last straight and simply went away to win by six lengths over Wordsworth (Galileo), third in the Irish Derby and second here with a length over King Edward VII Stakes (G2) winner Alenquer (Adlerflug), who had beaten him in the Royal Ascot Derby.

Hurricane Lane was bought for £200,000 (about US$236,000) as a yearling at Tattersalls, a few months before his dam Gale Force (Shirocco) was consigned there in foal to Australia and sold for £300,000 (about US$350,000) to Charlie Gordon-Watson. Trained in Britain by James Fanshawe, Gale Force came to France to crown her career with a Listed win in the Denisy, a two-miler run at Saint-Cloud in November on a very heavy turf.

At stud, Gale Force first gave Frankel's Storm (Frankel), a Listed-placed also fifth in the Prix des Réservoirs (G3) at 2, then Hurricane Lane, and a Sea the Stars colt. It is a family originating from the Aga Khan studs.

WHAT CONNECTIONS SAID

William Buick (jockey of Hurricane Lane, 1st)

“I would like to start by thanking France Galop, who have worked with the BHA. Their collaboration has made sure that everything was in place so that I could come and ride the horse. On Monday weren't even sure it would be possible! That was already a small victory. This horse is a superstar. He really had the perfect race today, unlike at The Curragh. The layout of the racecourse, the ground, the rhythm… Everything was perfect for him. He has a good cruising speed and a strong acceleration. Even more so, he is a very relaxed horse in his head! Off the back of that I think that the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe has to be a serious option for the autumn time.”

Charlie Appleby (trainer of Hurricane Lane, 1st)

“He's obviously been a very exciting horse to deal and he's only been beaten once in his life and that was in the Derby when I felt inexperience caught us out. Today's performance has franked him as one of the best three-year-olds in Europe and he's an exciting horse. As we always do we'll allow the dust to settle but you would have to be thinking about him as a serious contender for the Arc. We'll give him a bit of a break now because he's run in an English Derby, and Irish Derby and then backed it up two and a half weeks later in a Grand Prix de Paris. He deserves to have a break but whether he can give himself a break is another thing. He ran in the Grand Prix because he'd come out of the Irish Derby so well. He has a great constitution. He has a great mind and he show his wellbeing in the morning. A huge team effort goes into the way the horses are running at the moment and I'm delighted for his Highness Sheikh Mohammed.”

Olivier Peslier (jockey of Wordsworth, 2nd)

“He has ran well, despite not taking me along early. I had to shake him along to get him to follow the winner, to make sure I didn't get caught for toe. After that, he was very courageous and put in an excellent effort to finish second. He will be better suited by something a bit longer like the St Leger. He needs a little time to get going but he is quite talented.”

James Doyle (jockey of Alenquer, 3rd)

“The draw wasn't ideal. As we know it's not easy historically from the wide draw at Longchamp over a mile and a half. I rode him to come home and he's finished off very well. We were on the back foot a little bit and I had a little look up around the 800 metres out and I thought we had a bit of a mountain to climb. If the pace had held up it would have given me a chance but they did sort of steady at half way and made it very difficult for me to get into it. But I'm very proud of him, he's run a solid race and he's got the trip well. ”
