Brother to Cracksman Unveiled at Doncaster

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Wednesday's Observations features a daughter of Oaks winner Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

FRANTASTIC (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is one of the St Leger Festival's opening card's main attractions, being a full-brother to the illustrious dual G1 Champion S. hero Cracksman (GB). One of two bluebloods from the John and Thady Gosden stable, Anthony Oppenheimer's April-foaled homebred is joined by Shadwell's Israr (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), a March-foaled son of the G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. heroine Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).

THOUGHTS OF JUNE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of three Moyglare Stud representatives from three different stables and is a daughter of the 2013 GI Del Mar Oaks winner Discreet Marq (Discreet Cat), who was bought by Moyglare for $2.4 million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky 2014 November Sale. Owned in partnership by her breeder, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor, the April-foaled grey is joined by fellow Ballydoyle newcomer Forever and Always (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-sister to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Sussex S.-winning sire The Gurkha (Ire). From the Dermot Weld stable replete with classy juveniles this term, The Aga Khan's Haroya (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) also takes the eye as a daughter of the G3 Silver Flash S. winner Harasiya (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) who scored on her 2-year-old debut.

Frankel’s Triple Time In The Ascendant At Haydock

Both Godolphin's Book 1 sensation Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's homebred blueblood Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) were breaking their maidens Aug. 6, but as the latter was doing so at the third attempt it was the 2.1 million guineas purchase Hafit that elicited the greater excitement in a fascinating renewal of Saturday's Listed Betfair Exchange Ascendant S. Triple Time, who had been started over an inadequate six furlongs when third behind the subsequent G2 Superlative S. third Dhabab (Ire) (No Nay Never) at Leicester June 1, was a touch disappointing when runner-up to Mr McCann (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) over seven here a month later but that rival went on to finish fourth in the Superlative to add some symmetry to the form.

It was only when tackling this trip returning to this venue that he was able to grow into his early promise with a 9 1/2-length dismissal of the seven-race maiden but solid yardstick Point Lynas (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) and despite a tardy break here was once again sent straight to the front by Andrea Atzeni. As the Listed Stonehenge S. runner-up Power of Beauty (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}), who had got upset and reared in the stalls, waved the white flag in midstraight it was only Hafit who was able to pose a threat. Galloping relentlessly to ward off the favourite, Triple Time had the most to give in the run to the line to decide a contest that may be used as a reference point several times in the future.

Trainer Kevin Ryan is understandably excited about Triple Time and said, “Even in the Spring, we thought he was very special but he's taken a bit of time. Physically he's there, but mentally he's just taken racing to really learn the job. He was very impressive today. We were very worried about the ground, but Sheikh Mohammed Obaid is never afraid to get them beat and we decided we'd find out if he handled it or not. He's handled it and he's probably handled it because he's a very good horse. He's done everything we've needed to do this year and he's obviously identified himself as a very talented horse.”

Future targets and optimum trip have yet to be decided, but Ryan is not in a rush to decide the next race. “We'll do what's right by the horse. He's going to be a very exciting horse for next year,” he added. “Sheikh Mohammed Obaid said about going 10 furlongs and I said that is probably as far as we want to go. We are both on the same hymn sheet. You have to think of him as a Guineas horse, as that is the best trial for any race. I would presume that is what we will be leading to next year. He has loads of speed and you need a sprinter to go with him. He is a big striding horse and that is why Andrea has let him go to the front. If you try to break his stride he will try take you on. If you let him use his stride he will switch off and settle for you.”

Triple Time is a half-brother to four black-type winners who carried these silks with distinction. They are the G1 Prix Jean Romanet heroine Ajman Princess, this year's Listed Lingfield Derby Trial scorer and G3 Gordon S.-placed Third Realm, the G3 Bengough S. winner Cape Byron and the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein winner Ostilio who all plied their trade over a variety of trips. Reem Three, who is also responsible for the G1 Prix Saint Alary third Imperial Charm and is a half-sister to the G2 Celebration Mile winner and GI Arlington Million runner-up Afsare (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), has a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire) and a filly foal by Kingman (GB) to follow.

Frankel’s Rumi Gets Up In The Nonette

It was as tight as it gets at the finish of the 10-furlong G2 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville on Saturday, with Rumi (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) inching out Penja (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) as the home-trained fillies came out on top again as they had been in the Calvados earlier on the card. Coming in off a break having finished sixth in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp May 24 and ninth in the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly June 20, Al Shira'aa Farms' Apr. 11 G3 Prix Vanteaux winner tracked the pace closely on the inside as Gerald Mosse saved ground throughout. Challenging between rivals inside the last 50 metres, the 35-1 outsider had her nose down on the line to deny the G3 Prix de Psyche scorer Penja as Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) joined in with a flourish down the outside to be a short neck off them in third. “She had run only once as a 2-year-old and was moderate first time out this year, but in hindsight it was a little bit too early to be bringing her back,” trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias said. “After her fight in the group 3, she was maybe not prepared for all that and lacked freshness and experience in her next races. She wasn't really disgraced in the Diane and was running on at the end, so I gave her a good break and she'd been working well and was very fresh so it was probably what she needed. We'll target the [G1 Prix de l'] Opera [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 3]–we have seven weeks, so that's plenty of time and we'll see how she goes there before the owners decide if they want to keep her in training as a 4-year-old.”

Rumi, who cost €700,000 at the 2019 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, is out of Secrete (Fr}) (Cape Cross {Ire}) whose first foal was the G3 Prix Noailles third Normandy Eagle (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and whose third is the Listed Bluebell S. scorer Solage (GB) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire). The second dam is the Wertheimers' Featherquest (GB) (Rainbow Quest), a half-sister to Groom Dancer who was responsible for the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and the G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Balladeuse (Fr) (Singspiel {Ire}). Plumania produced three black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Plumatic (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), as well as the dam of the Listed Prix Zarkava scorer and G1 Prix Saint Alary third Solsticia (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}), while Balladeuse is also the dam a trio of that ilk including the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Left Hand (GB) also by Dubawi. Half-Sister To Almanzor Powers To TDN Rising Stardom at Kempton

Green when runner-up in her Aug. 2 unveiling tackling one mile at Kempton, George Strawbridge's homebred 2-year-old filly Natasha (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a half-sister to Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), returned to the scene of that defeat to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with an imperious performance in Friday's Try Our New Price Boosts At Unibet Fillies' Novice S. over the same one-mile strip. Sent forward to gain an early lead after breaking fourth from the outside gate, the 8-11 favourite was untroubled on the front end throughout and powered clear of toiling rivals inside the final quarter mile to easily outclass Moon Island (GB) (Oasis Dream) by an impressive five lengths.

“She had a real good blow last time and come on a fair bit for that first run,” said winning rider Rab Havlin. “She was green when I put her in daylight the last day and was like a rabbit caught in the headlights when I took her into space. She had a wide draw here, but is a quick learner. She was getting a little bit lonely in front and I was mindful to make her work to the line. I think she will improve again and will be a nice middle-distance filly for next year.”

Natasha is the seventh of eight foals and fifth scorer from as many runners produced by an unraced daughter of Listed Prix des Tourelles victrix Darkara (Ire) (Halling). The March-foaled homebred chestnut is a half-sister to G1 Prix du Jockey Club, G1 Champion S. and G1 Irish Champion S. hero Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), G3 Prix de Guiche placegetter Another Sky (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Listed Derby du Midi runner-up Troarn (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and a yearling colt by Dubawi {Ire}).
