Observations: Half to Washington DC Debuts

2.00 Navan, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, 5f 164yT
AESOP'S FABLES (IRE) (No Nay Never) is the latest potential Royal Ascot star to appear for Ballydoyle in 2022 and a notable one as a half-brother to that meeting's Listed Windsor Castle S. winner Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Along with that sire, whose career win total included the G3 Phoenix Sprint S., this February-foaled bay is also a half to the stable's G3 Chester Vase runner-up Sandhurst (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and he meets Peter Brant's Curragh third Midnight Toker (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), the Ger Lyons-trained half-brother to the G3 Grosser Preis von Hamburg winner K Club (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) who cost €330,000 at Goffs Orby.

3.51 Leicester, Novice, £8,000, 3yo, 10fT
MAGISTERIAL (IRE) (Frankel {GB}) has sufficient draw to bring Frankie Dettori to the track, as a Bjorn Nielsen-owned Derby entry beginning his 3-year-old campaign under a penalty having won at Haydock in October. A half-sister to Coolmore's queen Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the John and Thady Gosden trainee has a Godolphin newcomer to give seven pounds to in the Charlie Appleby-trained Ruling Dynasty (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), a half-brother to the stable's Old Persian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Frankel’s Westover Prevails In the Classic Trial

Last year's G3 Sandown Classic Trial was a momentous renewal and Friday's is another to keep a close eye on after a trio of likely types finished clear led home by Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Last seen finishing runner-up in Pontefract's Listed Silver Tankard S. in October, Juddmonte's imposing bay raced freely for Rob Hornby tracking the 6-5 favourite Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) throughout the early stages. Edging ahead a furlong from home, the 5-1 shot was initially wayward but honest enough to give extra and hold off the late surge of the highly promising TDN Rising Star Cash (Ire) (Shamardal) by a short head. Fellow TDN Rising Star Goldspur, whose juvenile form included a win in the G3 Zetland S. and a third placing in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, provided the ballast to the form, a length further away in third. “He's a beast, a serious unit, and we always thought he'd be better at three,” Hornby said. “He had a roll around in front, but got his head down on the line when it mattered. For a big horse, he's pretty well-balanced and is quite light on his feet.”

Westover, whose debut resulted in a success over a mile here in August, was also second to Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in Newbury's renowned Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions S. prior to the Silver Tankard. He had a distinct experience edge over the eye-catching runner-up as a result and Cash's trainer David Simcock was understandably buoyed by the performance of Earle Mack's exciting prospect. “He's come home strong, stayed the 10 furlongs well and showed a good turn of foot,” he said of the second, who had missed the break after proving difficult to load. “We've got a long time to go [until the Derby] and things like having another run first to think about. I'm not going to make any calls now, but it looks like we've got quite a nice horse on our hands and it looks like he'll stay well.”

Pedigree Notes:

Westover is the 10th foal out of Mirabilis (Lear Fan), who captured the GIII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile and was placed in the G1 Prix de la Foret, GII Jenny Wiley S. and GII Buena Vista H. His full-brother Monarchs Glen (GB), who was a disappointing fourth as the odds-on favourite in the 2017 edition of this race, went on to prove that form all wrong with successes in the G3 Darley Club S., Listed Wolferton S. and Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial S. The GII Buena Vista H.-winning second dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) is the producer of a former Juddmonte star in Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), heroine of the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, while the family also features the G2 Prix Eugene Adam scorer Burning Sun (Danzig) and group and graded-stakes winners Mallory (Aus) (Not a Single Doubt {Aus}) and Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy). Also connected to the G3 Earl of Sefton S.-winning sire Phoenix Tower (Chester House), Mirabilis's 2-year-old filly Jalapa (GB) is by Expert Eye (GB).

Frankel’s Mostahdaf Back With A Win At Sandown

Shadwell Estate Company's 4-year-old colt Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) endured his only defeat in six prior starts when a badly-hampered 12th of 13 in Royal Ascot's G1 St James's Palace S. last June and went postward as a strong odds-on favourite for Friday's G3 bet365 Gordon Richards S. at Sandown coming back off a win in October's G3 Darley S. at Newmarket. It was not all plain sailing in the three-runner affair and he was made to earn his corn by King Power Racing's G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner Foxes Tales (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Mostahdaf occupied the two slot as Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's G2 Superlative S. victor Juan Elcano (GB) (Frankel {GB}) set the tone from flagfall. Inching ever closer in the straight, the 1-2 lock came under pressure to challenge between both opponents approaching the quarter-mile marker and ran on strongly once subduing the persistent late threat of Foxes Tales by 2 1/2 lengths to double his pattern-race tally in ultimately comfortable fashion.

“He ran well throughout last season,” said Thady Gosden. “The St James's Palace didn't quite go according to plan, but we stepped him up to a mile-and-quarter here for the first time and he stayed it quite well. He won over nine furlongs last year, it is a stiff mile-and-quarter and the ground is riding a little bit dead at the moment, but he stayed well and it was a competitive enough race. There were three horses, but they are three solid horses and he did well. It can always be a bit trappy with three runners, but they went a fairly solid clip the whole way and he put up a good fight when he had to. We are hopeful he will come on for that run and the [G1] Prince of Wales's [at Royal Ascot] or a [G3] Brigadier Gerard [back here] will come under consideration.”

Mostahdaf, the fifth of seven foals, is one of four scorers out of Listed Garnet S. victrix Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a half-sister to GSW GI Frank E Kilroe Mile third Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and G3 Earl of Sefton S. third Euginio (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The March-foaled homebred is full to a yearling colt and a half-brother to G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). His second dam Starstone (GB) (Diktat {GB}) is an unraced half-sister to G1SW sires Pastoral Pursuits (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and Goodricke (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}).

Daughter Of Dar Re Mi Leads Blueblood Blitz

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features a full-sister to Group 1 winner and young sire Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

16.10 Sandown, Nov, £11,000, 3yo, f, 9f 209yT
Lord Lloyd Webber's untried DARMOISELLE (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a daughter of MG1SW distaffer Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and thus a homebred full-sister to MG1SW sire Too Darn Hot (GB), MG1SP G2 Middleton S. victrix Lah Ti Dar (GB) and stakes-winning G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB). She is set to load alongside Qatar Racing's John and Thady Gosden-conditioned stablemate Emotion (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is kin to dual Group 1-placed stayer Morgan Le Faye (GB) (Shamardal) out of G1 Prix du Cadran victrix Molly Malone (Fr) (Lomitas {GB}). Harry and Roger Charlton also multitask and send out Time Lock (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is a granddaughter of G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Passage of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}) produced by a full-sister to MG1SP sire Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}); and Merry Fox Stud's homebred Golden Sheen (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is the first foal out of a full-sister to G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin victor Second Step (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Of those with prior experience, Sir Michael Stoute trainee Crystal Estrella (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) is a contender of note coming back off a debut seventh at Newmarket in October. Her stakes-placed sibling Crystal Hope (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) backed up a debut seventh in the October of her juvenile campaign with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in the 2018 edition of this on seasonal return. Crystal Estrella and Crystal Hope are out of a half-sister to ultra-consistent G1 Prince of Wales's S.-winning sire Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Other Newmarket nominees set to venture south include Chris Wright's homebred Tequilamockingbird (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), who is out of a half-sister to G1 Prix du Moulin-winning matriarch Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill), from the Charlie Fellowes stable; and Roger Varian incumbent Oblong Song (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who is a twice-raced half-sister to G1 Sun Chariot S. victrix Spinning Queen (GB) (Spinning World). With the aforementioned Emotion slated to sport the number one silks, Qatar Racing's second colours will be carried by the Ralph Beckett-trained New Year Honours (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who is out of a half-sister to G1 1000 Guineas demotee Jacqueline Quest (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), herself the dam of three black-type performers headed by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Line of Duty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
