Westover to Gallop at Epsom Prior to Derby

Juddmonte's Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on Apr. 22, will forego another start prior to an intended run in the G1 Cazoo Derby on June 4, according to Barry Mahon, Juddmonte's General Manager of Ireland and European racing. The colt will have a workout over the Epsom Downs however, during the Cazoo Derby Gallops Morning on May 23.

“He's a beautiful looking horse, by Frankel who is excelling at present and [trainer] Ralph [Beckett] is very happy with him,” said Mahon. “If he continues to be in good form over the next week or two, we'll take our chance in the Derby.

“Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) ran at Sandown and went on Lingfield but because he didn't win he didn't have a penalty, whereas if we'd done that we would have.

“Ralph is happy and all being well, he'll go to Epsom for the gallops morning, [what was] Breakfast With The Stars when he can have a look around the track and hopefully we'll be on our way to Epsom.”

Juddmonte Mares Sell Well At Inglis Chairman’s

Friday's Inglis Chairman's Sale offered a trio of Juddmonte mares, and the priciest lot, Ludisia (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 48), showed the way at A$650,000. Snapped up by James Harron on behalf of Morningside VIC, the Twin Hills Stud-consigned daughter of crack French sprinter African Rose (GB) (Observatory) is in foal to Juddmonte stallion Kingman (GB). African Rose, in turn, is a full-sister to G3 Prix d'Aumale heroine Helleborine (GB) (Observatory), herself the dam of sensational G2 Coventry S. winner and now Coolmore sire Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}). Another of African Rose's half-sisters, Needleleaf (GB) (Observatory), foaled European champion juvenile Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who ran second in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas on Apr. 30.

Harron tweeted, “Delighted to secure [a] beautiful Frankel mare Ludisia for Morningside in foal to Kingman at Inglis from Twin Hills Stud and Juddmonte Farms. An absolute queen from an outstanding family of 2-year-olds, including current Godolphin star and last year's European Champion 2-year-old Native Trail.”

Team Lucky Vega acquired the other two Juddmonte mares, paying A$400,000 for Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}) (lot 47) and A$260,000 for lot 31, Escapement (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Both are carrying to fellow Juddmonte luminary Frankel and were also offered by Olly Tait's Twin Hills. The former is out of a half-sister to G1 St Leger victor Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and two other black-type winners, while the latter is related to Group 1 winner's Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar) and Passage of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}), with the last named the dam of exciting young stallion Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Coronation Cup First Up For Alpinista

Three-time Group 1 winner Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will step out in the June 3 G1 Cazoo Coronation Cup at Epsom for her first start of the year, according to trainer Sir Mark Prescott. Raced by breeder Kirsten Rausing, the 5-year-old delivered five victories in five starts in 2021, including three straight German Group 1s: August's Grosser Preis von Berlin, September's Preis von Europa and the Grosser Preis von Bayern on Nov. 7.

Prescott said, “She is fine and we intend to run her in the Coronation Cup. We have no intention of running her before–but as you know, it always goes wrong–our intention is to start in the Coronation Cup and end in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and what we do in between we are not quite certain, but that is the aim.

“I don't think she is particularly ground dependent, but I would avoid extremes.”
