Frankel Filly A New Rising Star At Deauville

Leaving a deep impression on debut at Deauville on Thursday, the Wertheimers' Left Sea (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Left Hand {GB}, by Dubawi {Ire}) earned TDN Rising Star status with a five-length success in the Prix de la Reboursiere over a mile. A daughter of their G1 Prix Vermeille heroine from the family of Plumania (GB) (Anabaa), the Carlos Laffon-Parias trained bay was nobody's secret as the 8-5 favourite and was allowed to establish an instant lead by Maxime Guyon. Kicking in early straight, the homebred registered a penultimate sectional of 11.19 as she stretched to the impressive winning margin over the Freddy Head-trained Brandywine (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), with another 1 1/2 lengths back to Dschingis Grace (Fr) (Dschingis Secret {Ger}) in third. “She is a very nice filly and we always liked her,” Laffon-Parias commented. “She has confirmed what we have seen at home and is in all the major races, including the Fillies' Mile.” Video, sponsored by TVG.

The sire's second TDN Rising Star at the current Deauville August Festival after Kelina (Ire) and his 33rd in total, Left Sea is the second and currently last known foal out of the aforementioned Vermeille heroine and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Left Hand, who is a daughter of the G2 Prix de Royallieu scorer Balladeuse (Fr) (Singspiel {Ire}). Balladeuse also produced the listed scorer Bilissie (GB) by Dansili (GB) and her full-sister Romanciere (Ire), who was placed on several occasions at group level including when third in the G1 Prix Jean Romanet.

The third dam Featherquest (GB) (Rainbow Quest) also threw the aforementioned Plumania, a past TDN Rising Star who went on to glory in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud before producing the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Plumatic (GB) from a mating with Left Hand's sire Dubawi. Other descendants of Featherquest, who is a half to the leading sire Groom Dancer, include Solsticia (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) who was third in the G1 Prix Saint Alary and Frankel's smart Rumi (Fr) who captured last year's G2 Prix de la Nonette and G3 Prix Vanteaux.

Eternal Pearl Caps Another Big Day For Frankel In The Minerve

Entering Sunday's G3 Prix Minerve at Deauville off a success in the Listed Aphrodite S. at Newmarket July 16, Godolphin's Eternal Pearl (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was on top again with the class rise as less a problem as her odds of 9-10 suggested beforehand. Always travelling easily for William Buick under cover, the descendant of the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}) moved to the front with a furlong remaining and stayed on powerfully to score by two lengths from Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}).

“She's learning all the time and quickened up the straight today, whereas it became a stamina test at Newmarket last time,” trainer Charlie Appleby said. “She will hopefully go that next level and we'll perhaps look at the Vermeille for her–she's a big, scopy filly who needs to strengthen but more importantly she's getting more of a racing brain. She's going the right way and she could be around next year.”

Eternal Pearl, who had also been second to the subsequent G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Sea Silk Road (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Goodwood's Listed Height Of Fashion S. May 20, is out of the Listed Prix des Lilas winner Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}). She is a daughter of the German group 3 scorer Pearl Banks (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), whose Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has won three pattern races headed by the G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. and was second in the G1 Prix de la Foret and G1 Matron S. Also responsible for another German group 3 winner in Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), she is out of the aforementioned Pearly Shells who also produced the listed-winning Pearls Or Passion (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), dam of the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Pelligrina (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Pearly Steph's colt foal is by Belardo (Ire).

Jacques Le Marois Glory For Frankel’s Inspiral

Putting her first career defeat in the G1 Falmouth S. firmly behind her on Sunday, Cheveley Park Stud's Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) took another step forward to defeat the colts and older horses in Deauville's illustrious G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois, a 'Win And You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland in November. Always travelling with abundant intent under Frankie Dettori as she craved action restrained a few lengths off the fierce pace duel up ahead, the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Fillies' Mile heroine worked her way to the fore with 300 metres remaining and had to give extra as the G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Light Infantry (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) emerged in the closing stages. Always a touch too strong for that rival, the 9-5 second favourite held a neck advantage at the line as the leading French hope Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) joined in to be the same margin away in third. The 8-5 market-leader Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made a dramatic wide move from further back, which fizzled out as he came home fifth.

“We were scratching our heads after Newmarket after an amazing performance in the Coronation, but today she was taking on Guineas winners and older horses and showed she's a true champion,” Dettori said. “We went extremely fast throughout and I hit the front plenty early, but John thinks she can get a little bit further in time so I wasn't afraid about getting to the line. She travelled great and was on it today but she's a filly that you need to know–when she wants to go, she's the kind of filly you don't want to disappoint.”

Inspiral, who had proven when ultra-impressive in the Coronation that she is the leading 3-year-old filly in Europe, was up against a notable front-runner's bias in the Falmouth where Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) stole a march on her. That July 8 feature has seen many upsets down the years and the quick surface prevalent at Newmarket's July Festival meant that the Gosdens' luminary was in much deeper than her odds of 1-6 suggested. This was a return to her comfort zone, with the pace so strong up front that Prosperous Voyage was behind the aggressively-ridden trio of State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}). Finishing off at 1:34.07, she is behind only the Freddy Head starlets Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) and Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in terms of winning time in the recent decades, with that duo out on their own in dipping under 1:34.

John Gosden, who was annexing a third straight win in a race he has won four times overall, was keen to revisit Inspiral's sole reversal at Newmarket. “It wasn't really that she was out of form last time–she'd had three weeks since Ascot and was in top form, but it was a small field and she didn't get any cover. She over-raced, did too much and didn't have much left at the end, which is her nature,” he explained. “There was a strong pace today and they went hard up front, so she switched off and relaxed. She probably hit the front a bit soon, to say the least, but the key with her is to get her relaxed early. She's very generous and wants to give and sometimes with that they're a little over-enthusiastic. You could go to a Matron or a Sun Chariot, but I would be inclined to freshen up for the QEII which is her main aim. I prefer to go to the Breeders' Cup with older horses, so not this year.”

David Simcock said of Light Infantry, “I'm very proud of the horse and very pleased. He had a gallop to run at today, which was good, and he's run his heart out and run a personal best. The likelihood is that he'll go straight to the Golden Eagle in Sydney now in October. That will be his last run of the year and then he'll come back.”

Not surprisingly, Coroebus ran the fastest individual furlong of the field in the second half of the race with his sectional of 10.95 coming between the three and the two-furlong pole but he had a lot of ground to make up and paid for that sharp effort late. Along with the progressive runner-up, The Aga Khan's previously unbeaten TDN Rising Star Erevann was also excelling with the promise of better to come having entered this as the least-hardened runner coming off a narrow G3 Prix Paul de Moussac win. Christophe Soumillon said of the son of Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), whose 10.99 split to two out was followed by the fastest final furlong, “My horse ran a blinder. He lacked some experience, but made a move like he would win it. Had it been slightly softer, it might have been a better result but I am proud of his performance.”

Inspiral, who was racking up group 1 win number 42 for her sire here, is out of the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk) whose previous best was the Listed Cocked Hat S.-placed Celestran (GB) (Dansili {GB}). The second dam Moon Goddess (GB) (Rainbow Quest), who produced the Listed Rosemary S. winner Solar Magic (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), is a daughter of the Listed Sweet Solera S. winner Mystic Goddess (Storm Bird) who was responsible for the G1 Eclipse S. and G1 Juddmonte International-winning sire Medicean (GB). Also connected to the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. winner Mondreise (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and leading sire Caro (Ire), Starscope's yearling colt is by Erevann's sire Siyouni.

Team Godolphin Goes One Better Again in Saratoga Oaks

The powerful team of owner/breeder Godolphin, trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick celebrated a second lucrative victory over the Saratoga turf in as many days as With The Moonlight led home a one-two finish for her sire in the GIII Saratoga Oaks Invitational Sunday. Having finished second to re-opposing McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the July 9 GI Belmont Oaks Invitational, she was backed at even-money with a perceived pace advantage on that rival and after stablemate Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) parlayed a second in last month's GI Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational to a victory in Saturday's GI Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational.

Visibly lathered, the bay and Buick allowed McKulick's stablemate Contemporary Art (Dubawi {Ire}) to show the way as they sat second by a couple of lengths. She sidled up to the pacesetter aggressively after six panels in 1:15.18 with McKulick swinging wide to join the fray. But neither Brown filly could run with the European raider in the stretch as she pulled away powerfully on her incorrect lead.

“She felt really good today,” Buick said. “I think the team had been really happy with the way she was training, so they were quietly confident going into it.

“She travels very well, which is key really. Our horses coming from Europe to here, they always improve with one run on these tracks. It's a lot different for them. Yesterday [with Nations Pride] and the filly today, they were always going to improve off that first run and I think they showed that.

“It's nice to come over here with two nice horses, two nice rides and two winners. It's a real privilege to be here to be honest. It really feels special.”

Scoring twice on all weather from four tries overall in England as a juvenile, With The Moonlight resurfaced to annex Newmarket's May 1 Pretty Poly S. convincingly over 10 panels, but faded abruptly to last in the G1 Cazoo Oaks the following month. She was ridden by Frankie Dettori in the Belmont Oaks.

“They went hard at Belmont and to be fair to Frankie, it was the first time he'd sat on her and I said, 'look, ride her like she'll get the trip,'” said Appleby, whose banner 2021 included eight Grade I wins in North America, including three on Breeders' Cup weekend. “On the evidence of today and evidence of that day, coming back a half a furlong suited her. She's got plenty of boot. You could almost bring her back to a mile. The more races she's got, the more experience she's got. She's learning how to do it. It was a good performance today.”

Appleby said With The Moonlight would not return for the 1 1/2-mile GIII Jockey Club Oaks Invitational downstate Sept. 17.

“The question mark was whether the Oaks would be something to look at, but that's clearly not an option for her,” Appleby said. “William said that was far enough for her today.”

Appleby isn't done for the Saratoga meet, however. He's pointing last year's champion turf male, GI Breeders' Cup Turf and Jockey Club Derby Invitational winner Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to the GI Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer S. Aug. 27.

“That's the plan,” he said.” He ships out on the 17th or 18th. He's in great order. It's been a long-term plan. We had a couple bumps in the road early on at Belmont [when third in GI Man o' War in May]. Unfortunately, the rain came in and there was no pace in the race. But, with what we've seen at home, we're very pleased with the way he's done so far. If he ships in well, he'll be a big player.”
