Frankel Filly Excites at ParisLongchamp

As the only inexperienced member of the line-up for Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux, Al Shira'aa Farms' Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) had her work cut out but after her command performance in ParisLongchamp's Classic pointer all were left pondering where her considerable talent will take her. Off the mark in professional if not flashy fashion over a mile at Chantilly in September, the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained half-sister to the G2 Lanwades Stud S. winner Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) was nevertheless not missed in the market as the 5-2 second favourite for the nine-furlong test. Racing under early restraint early from Christophe Soumillon with one behind, the bay who was a €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase made her move wide in early straight and struck the front 300 metres out en route to a comfortable 1 3/4-length success from Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).

“She is a very nice filly and considering what she does in the mornings, it was not a problem for me to run her in this group race on only her second career start,” Laffon Parias explained. “She has the speed for a race like the [G3] Prix de la Grotte next week, but I made the choice of this one thinking that it would be easier. She settled well in a race with a good rhythm and showed us all her quality in the straight. Now it looks like the [G1 Prix] Saint Alary and the [G1 Prix de] Diane, but an alternative is the [G1] Poule d'Essai [des Pouliches] and the Diane.”

Pedigree Notes
Jannah Rose, who becomes the 78th group winner for her sire, is out of the unraced Sophie Germain whose aforementioned daughter Creggs Pipes improved beyond all recognition from three to five years of age and also captured the Listed Cairn Rouge S. as well as placing in the G3 Fairy Bridge S. and G3 Blue Wind S. Also responsible for the listed-placed Silver Spear (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), Sophie Germain is a daughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Hydrion (Critique) from the family of the GI Breeders' Futurity hero and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie (Smart Strike) and the GI Personal Ensign H. heroine Pompeii (Broad Brush). Next up from the dam is a 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) who was bought by David Redvers for €280,000 at the most recent Goffs Orby.

Observations: Son of Joyeuse Takes the Eye at Deauville

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Thursday's Insights features a half sibling to Group 1 performers Maximal and Jubiloso.

14.25 Deauville, Mdn, €27,000, 3yo, c/g, 6fT
TREMBLANT (GB) (Shamardal) is the latest representative of Juddmonte's dual listed-winning and multiple group-placed Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), one of Frankel's half-siblings who has already produced the G1 Coronation S. third Jubiloso (GB) to a mating with Shamardal as well as the dual Group 1-placed Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and dual listed-placed Jovial (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). The only newcomer in the line-up, the Andre Fabre-trained bay is up against Al Shaqab's once-raced homebred Faleh (Fr), a Henri-Francois Devin-trained son of Frankel (GB) whose dam Al Johrah (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) was the nearest pursuer to Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) in the 2016 G2 Queen Mary S.

HOW THEY FARED
1.55 Leopardstown, Mdn, €15,000, 3yo, f, 10fT
All Time Great (Justify), the daughter of the GI E. P. Taylor S. and G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Curvy (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), was up with the pace from the outset before fading to be seventh.

2.30 Leopardstown, Mdn, €12,500, 3yo, c/g, 10fT
The Black Tiger (Justify), the son of Gagnoa (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), was strongly supported into 11-4 favouritism and raced prominently before finishing last of the nine. Aidan O'Brien later reported he had pulled a muscle in his hind quarters.

Homeless Songs Back In Action At Leopardstown

Not seen since finishing seventh in the G1 Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket in October, Moyglare Stud's brilliant Curragh Classic winner faces seven rivals in the mile contest including Qatar Racing's Listed Tetrarch S. winner Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who is also making a comeback having been off since the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas. Also featuring is Merry Fox Stud Limited and Newsells Park Stud Ltd's Mea Domina (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}), the Listed Prix Isola Bella winner who is making her debut for the Paddy Twomey stable.

Frankel’s Hans Andersen Back On Top

Just a notch below the top at two, TDN Rising Star Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shadow Hunter {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}) enjoyed the ideal confidence boost on his return in a depleted renewal of Leopardstown's G3 Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2,000 Guineas Trial S. on Sunday. Second in the G2 Futurity S. at The Curragh in August and fifth in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. back at that venue when last seen the following month, the 8-13 favourite was held up early by Ryan Moore as fellow Ballydoyle runner Carracci (Quality Road) supplied the pace. Sent forward early in the straight, the Westerberg colour-bearer took over a furlong out and stayed on strongly to score by 2 1/2 lengths from Bold Discovery (Bolt D'Oro), with Caracci three lengths back in third.

“Seven was plenty short enough for him last year and although we always felt he'd be happy at a mile we had others to slot in to those races so kept him too short,” Aidan O'Brien explained after welcoming his ninth winner of this prep. “It was my fault–he should have gone up to a mile and we think he'll get further than a mile this year. The plan is the French or Irish Guineas and maybe a French Derby.”

Pedigree Notes
Hans Andersen, who earned his TDN Rising Star tag when beating the subsequent National S. winner Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) at The Curragh in July, is the second foal out of the Listed Roses S. scorer and G3 Cornwallis S.-placed Shadow Hunter. She is a granddaughter of Cliveden Stud's stakes-placed Enemy Action (Forty Niner), a half-sister to the G2 Champagne S. and G2 Richmond S.-winning sire Daggers Drawn (Diesis {GB}) who produced the G3 Fred Darling S. runner-up and G1 1000 Guineas third Super Sleuth (Ire) (Selkirk). Also from the family of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Indian Haven (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), the G1 Gran Criterium scorer Count Dubois (GB) (Zafonic) and the G1 St Leger runner-up Kite Wood (Ire) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire), Shadow Hunter has a 2-year-old full-brother to Hans Andersen named Alonzo (GB).
