Frankel’s Task Force A New TDN Rising Star At Salisbury

There was a buzz about Juddmonte's Task Force (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the 10th foal produced by unique dual Classic heroine Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy {GB}), as he went postward as the even-money favourite for Saturday evening's Starman At Tally Ho Stud British EBF Maiden S. at Salisbury. He proved why as he returned with a TDN Rising Star rosette after delivering a deeply promising 3 1/4-length success in the six-furlong contest.

Swiftly into stride from an outer stall, the G2 Champagne S. entry cut across to shadow the pace in a close-up second throughout the early stages. Inching ahead passing the two-furlong pole, the homebred quickened beyond recall soon after and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing to outclass Kingswood Flyer (Ire) (Sioux Nation).

“Mr [Ralph] Beckett had me in Friday morning just to sit on him and to get a feel,” explained winning rider Rhys Clutterbuck. “He did a quick bit of work and he felt special. Mr Beckett told me he was very professional out of the gate, so I shouldn't have any problems getting a nice position. I got him into a nice position so that I was able to see how the race developed and he put the race to bed quite nicely. He probably wants seven furlongs in time and, ideally, it would have been more in our favour if there had been a little bit more rain. I think he'd like it softer, but he handled that [good] ground very well today.”

Pedigree Notes
Special Duty, who captured the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G2 Prix Robert Papin and was second in the G1 Prix Morny before being twice promoted from second to first by the stewards in the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, has yet to hit the heights as a broodmare with her best progeny being the listed scorer Elegant Verse (GB) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire). Also responsible for the Listed Prix Yacowlef runner-up South Bank (Tapit), she is a daughter of Quest To Peak (Distant View) who is also the second dam of the operation's GI Breeders' Cup Mile and G2 Vintage S.-winning sire Expert Eye (GB) (Acclamation {GB}).

The third dam is the Listed Prix Melisande winner and G3 Prix de Psyche runner-up Viviana (Nureyev), who produced Quest To Peak's seven-times grade I-winning full-sister Sightseek (Distant View) and the GI Yellow Ribbon S. winner Tates Creek (Rahy) and the dam of the four-times grade III winner and GI Clark S.-placed Fulsome (Into Mischief). Also from the family of the champion sire Chief's Crown, Special Duty's yearling filly is by Sea The Stars (Ire), while her colt foal is a full-brother to Task Force.

Ancient Wisdom Takes Aim At The Pat Eddery

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a 'TDN Rising Star' by Dubawi (Ire).

16.15 Ascot, Listed, £50,000, 2yo, 7fT
ANCIENT WISDOM (FR) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the key protagonist in this Listed Pat Eddery S. which his trainer Charlie Appleby has plundered in three of the last four years. Earning TDN Rising Star status on debut at Haydock, Godolphin's €2-million Arqana August sensation went to Newmarket for an easy spot last month and will have no excuses stepping up into black-type company. The son of the G3 Prix Minerve winner Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}) from the family of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) encounters some promising peers including the Sandown debut winner Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), the David Menuisier-trained full-brother to Sealiway (Fr) who has been bought into by Qatar Racing.

14.15 Newmarket, Mdn, £8,000, 2yo, 7fT
AABLAN (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the chosen of Charlie Appleby's 2-year-olds to represent Moulton Paddocks in this maiden won two years ago by the sire's Modern Games (Ire) and for the last three years. The first foal out of Promising Run (Hard Spun), a four-times Group 2 winner including the Rockfel S., he encounters King Power Racing's fellow newcomer and 375,000gns Book 1 graduate Bellum Justum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a member of Andrew Balding's smart-looking juvenile team from the family of the same sire and connections' G1 Champion S. fourth Fox Tal (GB).

18.45 Salisbury, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 6fT
TASK FORCE (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is the 10th foal out of Juddmonte's Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy), winner of the G1 Cheveley Park S. at this trip before being promoted remarkably on two occasions from second to first by the stewards in the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. Given that her best progeny so far, Elegant Verse (GB) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire) won her listed race over 12 furlongs on soft ground, this trip is probably a bare minimum but the fact that Ralph Beckett starts him out suggests he has shown plenty of his dam's pace at home.

In addition, the Goffs €50,000 Bonus Series will see €50,000 bonuses paid to the winners of a diverse range of 2-year-old maidens on Irish racecourses throughout 2024.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “A stated ambition of Goffs is to attract more of the top tier Irish yearlings to Orby and we are thrilled to present two larger days of impeccable quality in Orby Book 1 following increased support from leading breeders.

“They have been persuaded by the massive international buying bench that attended last year's successful sale and the evolution of the Goffs Two Million Series which means that only Orby yearlings will compete for a massive €2 million next year.  We are eternally grateful to our vendors for we our nothing without their horses and are so excited to present this superb selection to global buyers.”

TDN Rising Star Ylang Ylang Makes All For Impressive Silver Flash Success

Aidan O'Brien trainee Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who made all for a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with an impressive 2 3/4-length debut tally tackling seven furlongs at the Curragh in her only prior start, maintained her perfect record with a carbon-copy performance in Thursday's G3 Jockey Club Of Turkey Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown.

The prohibitively priced 1-4 favourite was slick from the inside gate and seized an early two length advantage in this black-type bow. Untroubled through halfway, she was shaken up with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on powerfully under urging in the closing stages to comfortably hold Vespertillo (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. She extends O'Brien's record in the seven-furlong contest to an unmatched 13.

“She had a good draw, so obviously Ryan [Moore] used it again, and the next day we'll take our time with her,” the trainer revealed. “She hit the gates the first day she ran and Ryan did the right thing. Today she had the draw and she did the same thing. He said she was probably doing plenty for him in front and he gave her a beautiful ride. We're delighted, Ryan was very happy with her and he said she ran straight through the line. She's a very low mover and he felt that the ground was a little bit deep, but he was very happy with her. Hopefully now it'll be the [G2] Debutante before the [G1] Moyglare and we'll let her sit in and relax. She's very genuine, she tries very hard and wears her heart on her sleeve. Natural is a good way to describe her.”

Pedigree Notes

Ylang Ylang, a 1.5-million guineas Tattersalls Book 1 graduate, is the first of three foals out of Listed Pretty Polly S., Listed Height Of Fashion S. and Listed Chalice S. placegetter Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal). The March-foaled bay's dam, who has also produced a yearling colt by Kingman (GB) and a weanling filly by Siyouni (Fr), is a half-sister to dual G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup-winning multiple Hong Kong champion Comic Strip (GB) (Marju {Ire}) and GI Flower Bowl Invitational and GI Diana S. heroine Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Shambolic is also a half-sister to the unraced Blinking (GB) (Marju {Ire}), whose descendants include stakes-winning G3 Lillie Langtry S. third Twitch (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), stakes-winning G3 Premio Dormello third Romsey (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}) and G3 Sweet Solera S. third Mottisfont (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}).
