Violence Colt Swiftest at OBS Thursday

A colt by Violence (hip 641) became the seventh horse of the week to work in under :10 seconds when he secured the furlong bullet time of :9 4/5 during Thursday's fourth session of the under-tack show ahead of next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt is consigned to the Spring sale by Raul Reyes's King's Equine as agent for his breeder, Aaron and Marie Jones LLC.

The colt will be making his second trip through the sales ring next week in Ocala after RNA'ing for $27,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

“We weren't getting enough for him as a yearling, we didn't think,” explained the Jones's longtime advisor Frank Taylor. “So Mrs. Jones decided to take him to the 2-year-old sale.”

Taylor continued, “Mrs. Jones usually has about 10 foals a year and usually there is one or two that we don't get enough for and we'll send to Raul to get ready for the 2-year-old sales.”

The colt is out of C'Mon Sister (Successful Appeal), who is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Iotapa (Afleet Alex).

“He's a very scopey, two-turn looking horse,” Taylor said. “He's from a heck of a family, there are a lot of good horses in that family.”

Of the colt's bullet breeze, Taylor said, “He's been training great all winter and Raul thought he was going to do really good. So we weren't overly surprised, but :9 4/5 is awful good. He had an amazing breeze. We are obviously very happy it and now we're hoping to have some luck in the ring. Hopefully he'll continue on to be a top horse.”

A colt by Pioneerof the Nile (hip 786) turned in Thursday's fastest quarter-mile breeze, covering the distance in :20 4/5 for consignor Eddie Woods. The dark bay colt is out of Fancy Day (Ire) (Shamardal), who is a daughter of graded winner Tizdubai (Cee's Tizzy). Tizdubai is a full-sister to champion Tiznow.

Bred by WinStar Farm, the juvenile RNA'd for $145,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

The under-tack show continues through Saturday, with each session beginning at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday and bidding begins each day at 10:30 a.m.

Serengeti Empress Retires to Taylor Made

Taylor Made Farm welcomed dual Grade I winner Serengeti Empress (Alternation) home to her birthplace on Monday afternoon. The 2019 Kentucky Oaks victress will be bred to red hot sire Into Mischief.

Shipping in from the Tom Amoss barn at Churchill Downs, Serengeti Empress will become barnmates with several other high-profile maiden mares, including Larry Best’s recent $1.95 million Keeneland November purchase Concrete Rose (Twirling Candy).

“It’s just special,” said Frank Taylor, the Vice President of Boarding Operations for Taylor Made. “When you get these Grade I winners come to the farm, it’s what we thrive on. We’ve had some great ones here, but we’ve now raised close to 110 Grade I winners, and she’s one of them. So whenever they get to come back home, it’s special.”

Serengeti Empress was bred by Tri Eques Bloodstock, a group made up of agent Jacob West, Mike Hardig and Val Henson. Henson, Taylor shared, is the Director of Maintenance and Special Projects at Taylor Made Farm and Serengeti Empress was the first mating he was a part of.

“Unfortunately, I talked him into selling her because I thought the bills she would bring in would be too high to keep her,” Taylor admitted. “But he’s gotten a few checks along the way. That makes it even more special. Our team takes great pride in raising horses like this. And to have another Oaks winner here is special.”

The daughter of Alternation was a $25,000 weanling-turned-$70,000 yearling pinhook.

“She was a very good foal when she was born here, a great individual,” Taylor said. “She was a standout. She sold pretty well for her pedigree, but every time out she just exceeded expectations.”
A 5½-length winner first time out, Serengeti Empress was a dual stakes winner by the end of her juvenile season. At three, she took the GII Rachel Alexandra S. before giving trainer Tom Amoss his first GI Kentucky Oaks victory. Also as a sophomore, she ran second in two Grade I races in the Acorn S. and Test S. and then wrapped up the season with a third-place effort in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

This year, the fleet-footed bay added wins in the GII Azeri S. and the GI Ballerina S. to her resume before finishing out her racing career with a runner-up effort behind Gamine (Into Mischief) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

The over-$2.1 million dollar earner is the first graded stakes winner for owner Joel Politi, an orthopedic surgeon from Columbus, Ohio. Upon her retirement, Politi opted to retain the mare instead of offering her at this fall’s breeding stock sales.

“She’s become part of his family,” Taylor said of Politi’s relationship with the talented filly. “Joel and his daughter and wife are all very excited to be part of her broodmare career. Joel is a super guy, and it’s going to be exciting to get that Into Mischief baby and see what happens.”

Of the stallion choice, Taylor added, “Basically you’re breeding the best to the best. I guess there’s no better choice to go with. You know, she got beat by Gamine in her last start so that just makes it more important to breed to Into Mischief. He’s a stallion that’s in his own league.”

Joy Valley Dies

Joy Valley (Brz) (Ghadeer {Fr}–Belle Valley, by Mogambo {Uru}) died last Friday at Taylor Made Farm due to the infirmities of old age. She was 31.

Owned by Marie Jones, Joy Valley was the dam of four stakes winners, including 2000 Eclipse champion older mare Riboletta (Brz) (Roi Normand). Riboletta was a Group 1 winner in her native Brazil before relocating to the United States where she won the GI Beldame S., GI Santa Margarita, GI Milady Breeders’ Cup H., GI Vanity H., GI Clement L. Hirsch, and GI Ruffian H. She retired with over $1.5 million in earnings.

Joy Valley was also the dam of Super Power (Brz) (Roi Normand), a multiple Group 1 winner, Horse of the Year, and champion colt at two and three in Brazil.

“She was an incredible mare,” said Frank Taylor. “We were privileged to have her here for so many years at Taylor Made Farm for Aaron and Marie Jones. She produced an Eclipse champion in Riboletta and was just a great mare. Everything you could hope for.”

Joy Valley will be buried at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Joy Valley, Dam Of Champion Riboletta, Dies At Age 31

Taylor Made Farm announced Oct. 30 that Joy Valley (BRZ) has died from infirmities of old age. She was 31 years old.

By Ghadeer (FR) out of multiple Brazillian-Grade 1 winner Belle Valley (BRZ), Joy Valley was owned by Aaron and Marie Jones and resided at Taylor Made Farm.

Joy Valley was the dam of four stakes winners, including Riboletta (BRZ). Named 2000 Eclipse champion older mare, Riboletta was a Group 1 winner in her native Brazil before coming to the U.S. Once she was stateside, she captured an additional five Grade 1 victories, including the Beldame, Santa Margarita, Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap, Vanity, Clement L. Hirsch, and Ruffian Handicap She retired with over $1.5 million in earnings.

Joy Valley was also the dam of Super Power (BRZ) a multiple Grade 1 winner, Horse of the Year, and twice named Champion colt at ages two and three in Brazil.

Additionally, she produced stakes winners Forest Attack and Tamara Princess (BRZ).

Joy Valley will be buried at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.
