Jockey Frank Alvarado Picks Up 4,000th Career Victory

Veteran jockey Frank Alvarado, a mainstay in Northern California throughout the 21st century, picked up his 4,000th career victory in Race 2 on Sunday at Golden Gate Fields aboard five-year-old mare Shout It Out (Boisterous). 54-year-old Alvarado had to wait out a photo finish before giving an exuberant fist pump when the order of finish was posted. He was greeted in the winner's circle post-race by family, friends, racing officials, and fellow members of the Golden Gate riding colony. Alvarado's mounts have accrued $87.8 million throughout a long and successful career that began in his native Panama in 1984. Alvarado's first career win came at Panama's Hipodromo Presidente Ramon Racecourse on April 2, 1984.

Among Alvarado's top mounts currently in training are champion Northern California sprinter Top Harbor (Harbor the Gold) and recent Santa Anita stakes-winning 2-year-old Grand Slam Smile (Smiling Tiger).

Rebalation Runs Down Nardini To Take Bear Fans Stakes

In November, the El Dorado Shooter Stakes for California-bred or sired sprinters was won by Top Harbor, who is out of stakes-winning broodmare Reba Is Tops. On Saturday at Golden Gate Fields in Berkely, Calif., Top Harbor's older sister Rebalation won the โ€œfilly and mare versionโ€ of the El Dorado Shooter, the Bear Fans Stakes, running down race favorite Nardini in the concluding stages to pick up her first career stakes victory.

Rebalation, ridden to victory by veteran Frank Alvarado, sat off the pace before unleashing a ferocious rally in the final furlong. 7-5 race favorite Nardini skipped away from the competition in the final furlong and had opened up multiple lengths at that point, but 4-1 second choice Rebalation had enough in the tank to run down Nardini in the final strides. The official winning margin was a half-length and the six furlongs on Tapeta was completed by Rebalation in 1:09.62 seconds.

Rebalation paid $10.80 to win, $4.00 to place, and $3.40 to show. Nardini returned $3.20 to place and $2.80 to show while Tip Top Gal (off at odds of 15-1) paid $5.40 to show. 80-1 longshot J and K Express completed the superfecta and Carolina Mia ran fifth. They were followed in by Princess Vivian, Getting Sideways, Draw Me, Daffodil Sweet, Dee Gee, Square Peggy, Ima Happy Cat, and Hot Rageous.

Rebalation, bred in California by her owners Gordy Jarnig, Kenny Marshall, and Eric Schweiger, now boasts a rock-solid record of five wins, one second, and three third-place finishes from 11 lifetime starts. The 4-year-old filly has accrued lifetime earnings of $137,328.

Live racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday with 11 races and an early first post of 11:45 AM PT. Sunday is Closing Day of the Fall Meet at Golden Gate, with a mandatory payout in the Golden Pick Six jackpot wager. The Pick 6, beginning in Race 6, has a $48,120 carryover heading into the Sunday card. There are also mandatory payouts in the Early Pick 5 (Races 1-5) and Late Pick 5 (Races 7-11), and the Rolling Super High Five in Race 11. The marquee race of the day is Race 9, the $50,000 Miss American Stakes for filly and mare turf routers.

Rager Posts Upset In Oakland Stakes At Golden Gate Fields

4-year-old gelding Rager produced a powerful kick from midfield and defeated six other foes in the feature race on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields in Berkley, Calif., the $50,000 Oakland Stakes for 3-year-olds and upward. Veteran jockey Frank Alvarado guided the son of Into Mischief to victory.

Sent off at odds of 8-1, Rager sat in midfield before starting a move midway on the far turn. Swinging for home, he was within three lengths of the lead before picking off rivals, hitting the front with a sixteenth of a mile to go, and finishing the job for a length score. He stopped the clock for six furlongs on Tapeta in 1:09.19.

Runner up finished Italiano completed a pricey exacta while Southern California shipper Ultimate Bango ran third. In Our A, sent off at post time as the 8-5 favorite, hopped in the air at the start and lost significant ground from the onset. He passed runners down the stretch and hit the wire fourth. Border Town, Papa's Golden Boy, and I'mgonnabesomebody completed the field.

Rager continues a phenomenal fall meet for trainer Tim McCanna, who has won with 11 of 27 starters. Rager paid $19.00 to win, $9.00 to place, and $4.60 to show. Italiano returned $18.80 to place and $8.40 to show while Ultimate Bango paid $3.40 to show. With the stakes win, Rager improved his lifetime record to four wins, three seconds, and four third-place finishes from 19 lifetime starts, with career earnings of $187,010. In August, McCanna and owners Jethorse LLC claimed Rager for $40,000 out of an allowance race at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Since then, he was run twice for Team McCanna: a win in the Oakland Stakes and a runner-up finish behind high-level claimers last month.

Live racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday afternoon with a nine-race program. First post is 12:45 pm PT. Next week, Golden Gate offers four live race days: a Thanksgiving program with an early first post of 11:15 AM, and Friday-Sunday cards with first post at the standard 12:45 pm time slot. The feature race on Friday, the $50,000 Golden Gate Debutante, overfilled and has been split into two divisions. The marquee race on Saturday is the signature race of the meeting, the $100,000 Grade 3 Berkeley Handicap for three-year-olds and upward at one mile and a sixteenth. Both stakes will be run on the main track Tapeta.

Top Harbor Noses Out In Our A To Win El Dorado Shooter Stakes

One would be hard-pressed to find a better stretch run than what race watchers witnessed in the seventh race at Golden Gate Fields in Berkley, Calif., on Halloween Sunday. The featured seventh race, the $75,000 El Dorado Shooter Stakes for California-bred or sired 3-year-olds and upward, ended in a photo finish between the top two finishers, Top Harbor and In Our A. In the end, Top Harbor got the better of the bob and won the six-furlong contest by a narrow nose.

Trained by Tim McCanna and ridden to victory by Frank Alvarado, 5-2 third-choice Top Harbor sat off the pace early before saving ground on the rail throughout the far turn run. Swinging for home, Top Harbor stuck to the rail and came with a ferocious rally inside of In Our A, who had taken the lead from 7-5 post-time favorite War Games in midstretch. In the final sixteenth of a mile, In Our A had his head in front for most of the way, but Top Harbor continued to battle, surged in the final strides, and got his nose down at the wire just in time.

War Games finished a length and a half behind the top pair and completed the trifecta, followed by R M C Hook'em and Jamming Eddy. Top Harbor ran the six furlongs in a crisp 1:09.46. Top Harbor paid $7.60 to win, $4.00 to place, and $2.20 to show. In Our A, off at post time as the 2-1 second choice in the wagering, returned $3.40 to place and $2.20 to show. War Games paid $2.10 to show.

Top Harbor, owned by breeders Gordy Jarnig, Kenny Marshall, and Eric Schweiger, increased his career earnings to $187,774 with the El Dorado Shooter stakes victory. His lifetime record reads 4 wins, 3 seconds, and 3 thirds from 11 lifetime starts. Top Harbor, a 3-year-old colt, is by Harbor the Gold and out of 5-time stakes winner and 464k earner Reba Is Tops.

In Our A is no slouch himself. The full brother to multiple stakes winner Bulletproof One has now raced 10 times, with 5 wins and 5 seconds. Ellen Jackson trains the 5-year-old gelding for breeders Kevin and Kimberly Nish of KMN Racing and Victory Rose Thoroughbreds.
