Partnership Off To Flying Start With No Nay Never Rising Star In France

Craig Bernick and Haras d'Etreham's hitherto untested 2-year-old filly Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never–Sparrow {Ire}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) was hammered down to 5-2 favouritism at the tills for Thursday's €30,000 Prix des Closeaux at Chantilly and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after making all for an impressive success in the straight six-furlong newcomers' test. Breaking smartly to seize an immediate lead, she was in command throughout and kept on powerfully under pressure inside the final quarter-mile to easily outclass Freville (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by 3 1/2 lengths in taking fashion. Les Pavots becomes the seventh 'TDN Rising Star' for No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) and joins an honour roll which includes Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Little Big Bear (Ire).

Nicolas de Chambure told TDN Europe that the partnership (Haras D'Etreham and Craig Bernick) had privately purchased three yearling fillies from Coolmore last year, one of which was Les Pavots.

“We do all these deals through Hubie De Burgh and it was a big team effort with Hubie and Craig to buy those fillies from Coolmore,” de Chambure said. “It's the first one of the three to race, and it's a great start to that partnership.”

The other fillies were also by No Nay Never, one out of Believe'N'Succeed (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) making her a half-sister to Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the other is out of G1 Irish Oaks winner Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

“Coolmore breed such brilliant horses, and it was great to be able to buy some of those well-bred fillies with long-term plans,” he added. “The filly out of Believe'N'Succeed is with Fabrice Chappet and the Bracelet filly is with Christophe Ferland.”

Les Pavots is the fifth of six foals and fourth scorer from as many runners produced by G3 Ballyogan S. third Sparrow (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself out of G3 Middleton S. victrix and G1 Oaks second All Too Beautiful (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). All Too Beautiful, in turn, is a daughter of storied matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki). The March-foaled chestnut is a half-sister to G1 Cox Plate and G1 Tancred S. hero Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), dual stakes-winning G3 Gordon S. and G3 N E Manion Cup placegetter Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and a yearling colt by Camelot (GB).

Dubawi’s The Revenant Registers Listed Prix Altipan Hat-Trick

Al Asayl France's homebred 2020 G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}–Hazel Lavery {Ire}, by Excellent Art {GB}), returning off an Oct. 15 seventh when making his fourth start in the Ascot benchmark last time, registered a hat-trick in Saint-Cloud's Listed Prix Altipan with a comfortable win in Thursday's latest edition of the one-mile test. It was the 8-year-old gelding's sixth success in eight outings over the track's course and distance. Settling into a smooth rhythm racing at the tail of the eight-runner field into the straight, the 3-5 favourite made relentless progress saving ground along the far-side rail to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining and was pushed out to defeat Anthorus (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths in snug fashion.

“He is such a special horse for us and by winning this race for the third time shows us that he can still compete at a high level at the age of eight,” commented Francis Graffard. “That's what I wanted to find out with this first start, to see if he still possessed his fighting spirit, because he had a hard race last time out at Ascot. The race unfolded perfectly for him. He settled into a great rhythm, it was a ground-saving trip on the inside and he idled once in front because he knows the job. I didn't work him too hard at home and he will come on for the run. The program is straightforward and it should be the [G3 Prix] Edmond Blanc and then the [G2 Prix du] Muguet. However, he will not run if the going is not soft enough. He needs that ground, more than ever, and didn't really get it last year.”

The Revenant, a half-brother to the hitherto untried 3-year-old filly Andraste (GB) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), is the second of five foals and lone winner produced by G3 St Simon S. victrix Hazel Lavery (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}), herself a half-sister to MGSP Czech champion Leo Gali (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled chestnut's third dam Rapid Repeat (Ire) (Exactly Sharp) is kin to four black-type performers headed by G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial-winning sire Artema (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}).

Arqana Autumn Record-Setting Carini Off To Australia

A pair of three-year-old colts bred and raced by His Highness the Aga Khan are off to Australia after accounting for two of the three top prices during Monday's horses-in-training section of the Arqana Autumn Sale in Deauville.

Catalogued as lot 344, the gelding Carini (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was the owner of current stakes form, having recently finished runner-up in the Listed Prix Vulcain (2500m) at Deauville for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. A three-time winner from his six lifetime starts overall, including conditions events over 10 furlongs at ParisLongchamp in June and July, the dark bay was hammered down to Nicolas Lefevre's Equos Racing on the phone with Astute Bloodstock's Louis Le Metayer for a record-setting session-topping bid of €600,000. Lefevre confirmed that Canisi would continue his career in Australia.

“I bought it with my former boss, Louis Le Metayer, for one of his Australian clients,” Lefevre commented of the wild card entry. “It's been four years since we bought together, there is a lot of competition on horses with profile like his. We had been following him for a long time. We are thrilled that the story will continue with him.”

Carini is a son of Candarliya (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), three times a winner at group level for the Aga Khan and Alain de Royer-Dupre and runner-up to dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) in the 2016 running of the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille. The 12 lots from the Aga Khan draft generated €1.48 million in turnover to be the leading vendor.

Shaiyhar (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) (lot 372) is also off to Australia after being purchased via the Arqana online platform by the training duo of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young for €300,000. Also conditioned by Graffard, the bay gelding was a well-beaten fourth on his 3000-metre debut at Lion D'Angers in July, but improved for the experience to shed his maiden tag going 14 furlongs at ParisLongchamp Sept. 15. He made it two in a row over 2900m at Clairefontaine when last seen Oct. 17.

Recent graduates of the Autumn Sale that have trained on successfully in Australia include Mount Popa (Ire) (Maxios {GB}), winner of the G3 Sellwood S. at Rosehill this past March; Arapaho (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who caused a 20-1 upset in the Premiers' Cup at Randwick in August; and the Aga Khan-bred Mirann (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), third in listed company at Gosford in May.

The Jean-Claude Rouget galloper Djo Francais (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) (lot was the afternoon's second-dearest seller, as the four-year-old was picked up by the BBA Ireland–also online–for €320,000. A listed winner at Chantilly last season, the 104-rated chestnut was a winner of the Listed Prix Jacques Laffitte first-up for six months at ParisLongchamp in April and two starts later made all the running to scoop the G3 Prix Bertrand de Breuil Longines back at Chantilly June 19. Djo Francais will now go to Saudi Arabia with an eye on one of the valuable races on the Saudi Cup program.

A total of 162 horses were reported as sold for gross receipts of €6,421,000. The average of €39,636 improved by 7.67%, while the median of €15,000 declined by 25%.
