Private Mission Much The Best In Torrey Pines At Del Mar

Private Mission added graded stakes winner to her resume with her win in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Ridden by leading jockey Flavien Prat, the daughter of Into Mischief took the lead entering the far turn and sailed away to an easy 6 1/2-length victory for owner Baoma Corporation and trainer Bob Baffert.

Breaking from the outside post, Prat held Private Mission a half-length off of early leader Lady Mystify as the Peter Eurton-trained filly logged fractions of :22.28 for the first quarter-mile and :46.71 for the half-mile. As the field of seven rounded the final turn, Private Mission took over, moving past Lady Mystify under a hand ride from Prat. Into the stretch, she stretched her advantage out with ease, the field unable able to mount any serious challenge. I'm So Anna was second and Forest Caraway took third. Lisette, Lady Mystify, Day Plan, and Jeanne B rounded out the field.

The final time for the one-mile Torrey Pine was 1:37.89. Find this race's chart here.

Private Mission paid $4.00, $3.20, and $2.20. I'm So Anna paid $6.00 and $2.80. Forest Caraway paid $2.10.

“She broke really well from the gate and put me right into the race. She got a little aggressive down the backstretch, so I gave her a little bit of a breather until the turn for home,” Flavien Prat said after the race. “When I asked her, she really dug in and got it done. She won pretty easily.”

“We didn't know what she was going to do, but we always thought she could run long. This was a good spot and she passed the route test. That's very important. That's where all the money is,” Baffert commented after the Torrey Pines.

Bred in Kentucky by Mount Brilliant Broodmares, Private Missions is by leading sire Into Mischief out of the Unbridled mare Private Gift. Consigned by Lane's End, Baoma Corporation, the nom du course for Charles Chu, paid $750,000 for Private Mission at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. With three wins in four lifetime starts, the 3-year-old filly has career earnings of $136,800.

Private Mission Seeks Black-Type Badge in Torrey Pines

Baoma Corp.'s Private Mission (Into Mischief) looks to secure her black-type badge Saturday in Del Mar's GIII Torrey Pines S. A debut winner at Santa Anita Oct. 18, the $750,000 FTSAUG buy checked in fourth as the favorite in this venue's Desi Arnaz S. Nov. 14. The bay returned to winning ways with a front-running score in a six-panel optional claimer in Arcadia June 12 and tries a mile for the first time here. The Bob Baffert pupil prepped for this with a best-of-82 five furlongs in :59 flat at Del Mar Aug. 14.

Phoenix Thoroughbred's Forest Caraway (Bodemeister) boasts two wins and a second at this oval. Opening her account here last August, the Empire-bred was second to Princess Noor (Not This Time) in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. next out in September and was fourth in Santa Anita's Anoakia S. Oct. 18. The half-sister to GSW Holiday Disguise (Harlan's Holiday) and MSW Midnight Disguise (Midnight Lute) registered a decisive optional claimer victory at this oval Aug. 1.

Peter Eurton sends out an intriguing candidate making her black-type bow in Lady Mystify (Bernardini). Hitting the board in her first two attempts in sprints, the bay ran away to an 18-length graduation when extended to a mile at Santa Anita Feb. 5. She wired a track-and-trip optional claimer last out July 29.

Princess Noor Gives Baffert Ninth Victory In Del Mar Debutante

Zedan Racing Stable's high-priced filly ran like she was worth every penny of the $1.35 million owner Amir Zedan spent on her this past April at a 2-year-old in training sale and took down honors in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Sunday afternoon at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

The well-made daughter from the first crop of the Giant's Causeway stallion Not This Time overcame some jostling at the start, then took command at the head of the lane to draw out to a 6 1/2-length tally in the 70th edition of the local championship race for 2-year-old fillies. As the 7-10 favorite in the field of six, she returned $3.40, $2.40 and $2.10 across the board after surviving a stewards inquiry that looked at the incident at the start.

Hall of Famer Victor Espinoza handled the filly for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Espinoza had been aboard her here on August 22 when she easily took her debut in a straight maiden race.

“Yes, she's a little green,” said Espinoza. “Only her second time (to race). Coming away from there she went in a bit and I tried to get her off as quickly as I could. You try to control the babies as best as you can, especially at the break. The other filly (My Girl Red) came out on me. My filly was OK from there. I really don't know how good she is, because I haven't let her run yet. It's nice to be back at Del Mar and riding good horses.”

Princess Noor earned a winner's check for $150,000 from the $250,000 purse and now has a bankroll that reads $183,000.

Finishing second in the seven panel spin was Phoenix Thoroughbreds' Forest Caraway and third was Bolton, Leidel or Lipman, et al's Illumination. The second choice in the race, Erich G. Brehm's My Girl Red, who was involved in a bit of bumping with the winner away from the gate, appeared to take a bad step less than a furlong into the race and was pulled up by her rider. She was returned to her barn and reported to be fine.

Princess Noor ran the distance in 1:23.15, though she was under a stout hold for the last sixteenth of a mile.

The Debutante win was the fifth for rider Espinoza and ninth for trainer Baffert.

“We knew going in she was a special filly,” said Baffert by telephone from Kentucky. “She showed so much brilliance at the sale, that's why she cost so much, and we got what we expected to see today. She broke a little off kilter and was behind horses, but Victor didn't really push her, especially at the end. We're happy to get the win. We'll run her back at Santa Anita and then go from there.”
