American Pharoah Colt Upsets Baffert Trio in San Vicente

Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) upset the highly touted Bob Baffert trio to register a front-running victory in Santa Anita's GII San Vicente S. Saturday. Longshot What in Blazes (Straight Fire) burst from the outside post in this five-horse affair with the rest of the field breaking in tandem to his inside. Forbidden Kingdom sprinted up the fence to take command with Grade I winner Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) and his stablemate McLaren Vale (Gun Runner) tracking from about a half-length back through a :21.86 opening quarter. 'TDN Rising Star' Doppelganger (Into Mischief) shadowed his two Baffert barnmates and What in Blazes watched from last after his sharp start. Carving out a half-mile in :44.49, Forbidden Kingdom showed the way into the lane and continued strongly to the wire for a good-looking 2 1/4-length victory. The rest of the field maintained their positions to the finish.

“He's as quick as they come,” said Richard Mandella, who indicated his colt would make his next start Mar. 5 in the GII San Felipe S. “In his last race, he tore a piece of his foot off [after stumbling at the start] and then we had a quarter crack.  We had to fix it up and it is good and we hope it stays good. We'll have to try two turns down the road here. He's gotten better about everything. He was so professional today, everything went well.  He used to get a little antsy in the gate. He's stumbled a few times.”

Forbidden Kingdom went wire-to-wire in his 5 1/2-panel unveiling at Del Mar Aug. 21. Third next out in the turf sprint Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita Oct. 1, he led every step of the way of Del Mar's seven-panel GIII Bob Hope S. Nov. 14, only to be run down by the Baffert-trained 'TDN Rising Star' Messier (Empire Maker) and forced to settle for second, beaten 3 1/2 lengths.

Pedigree Notes:

Forbidden Kingdom is the 13th graded winner and 24th black-type victory for Triple Crown hero American Pharoah. He is out of GSW Just Louise, who is a half-sister to MGSW Sara Louise (Malibu Moon). The 14-year-old mare is also the dam of a juvenile colt by Bolt d'Oro, who summoned $275,000 from Vekoma Holdings at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, and a 2021 filly by Not This Time. She is currently in foal to Tiz the Law.

Mandella Has Forbidden Kingdom Back On Track For San Vicente

Absent from the races two months, Forbidden Kingdom, a $300,000 son of 2015 Triple Crown king American Pharoah, returns in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

“He grabbed a quarter in his last race,” Richard Mandella said, alluding to the G3 Bob Hope at Del Mar on Nov. 14. “It was a bad one and it took a while to heal up, but he's back in good shape now.”

Forbidden Kingdom has been working smartly, as a bullet six furlong move in 1:12.40 at Santa Anita on Jan. 10 attests.

Bred by Spendthrift Farm which owns a share of the chestnut colt along with MyRacehorse, Forbidden Kingdom won his debut race at Del Mar last Aug. 21, then was third as the 9-5 favorite in the Speakeasy on turf at Santa Anita Oct. 1.

Forbidden Kingdom has had eventful trips in all three of his races, drifting out, getting bumped and stumbling, respectively.

Juan Hernandez, who has been aboard in all three starts, retains the mount.

The San Vicente is a race that could lead to the G1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

San Vicente is one of three stakes Saturday and one of six next weekend at The Great Race Place.

With Horse of the Year favorite Knicks Go and the brilliant Life Is Good set to meet in the G1, $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Saturday at Gulfstream Park, fans will be treated to a huge day of bicoastal racing at both Gulfstream in South Florida and at Santa Anita.

Ten graded stakes will be offered between the two venues with first live race post time for a nine-race program at Santa Anita 12:30 p.m. PT.

Complementing the San Vicente on Saturday are the G3, $200,000 Palos Verdes Stakes at six furlongs for 4-year-olds and up and the G3, $100,000 Megahertz Stakes at a mile on turf for older fillies and mares.

Sunday's attractions are the G2, $225,000 San Marcos Stakes for older horses at 1 ¼ miles on turf, and two $75,000 events, the Lady of Shamrock Stakes at a mile on turf for 3-year-old fillies and the Baffle Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs on turf for 3-year-olds.

Empire Maker ‘Rising Star’ Rallies Into Fast Pace to Take Bob Hope

Heavily-favored Messier sat off of a supersonic pace in Sunday's GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar and rallied to score going away in the end, giving Bob Baffert–who had three of the four starters–his 11th victory in the seven-furlong test for 2-year-old males.

Hammered down to 1-2 favoritism on debut June 27 at Los Alamitos, the $470,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling buy cruised to an easy 6 1/2-length graduation off a brief layoff Oct. 22 at Santa Anita to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors. Taking the bulk of the play here while removing blinkers, the bay broke smoothly but was out-footed by his three rivals early and sat at the back of the pack under Flavien Prat as the lone non-Baffert entry, Forbidden Kingdom showed the way through a scorching :21.40 half. Poking his head into third as the half went up in a blistering :43.23, he spun into the clear approaching the lane as the field started to condense. Forbidden Kingdom fought valiantly until around the eighth pole, but the early fractions took their toll and Messier took charge before kicking clear for a comfortable victory in the end.

“We were in a good spot,” said Prat. “There was plenty of pace in the race and that was to our advantage. When I asked, he was there. And I think this horse will be fine with running on.”

“Messier shipped down this morning. He didn't train here during the summer and had never been here,” added Baffert. “First time on a trailer, first time he'd seen Del Mar and he walked into the paddock like he owned it. The track is pretty glib so the fractions were fast. In the summer, 21 and [two] wouldn't hold up, but this time speed carries and they were rolling.”

Pedigree Notes:
With the win, Messier becomes the 67th stakes winner and 37th graded stakes winner for the late Empire Maker. He's the lone foal to race thus far out of his dam, who took back-to-back renewals of Woodbine's Trillium S. in 2014 and 2015. His third dam is Canadian champion Catch the Ring (Seeking the Gold), who in turn produced a Canadian champion in Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy). Sold to Silesia Farm for $290,000 as part of the Sam-Son Farm dispersal at Keeneland January this year, Checkered Past foaled a Candy Ride (Arg) filly Feb. 7 before being bred to Authentic.

Baffert To Saddle Three Out Of Five Entries In Sunday’s Bob Hope Stakes

Trainer Bob Baffert has Sunday's Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar surrounded.

The white-haired, Hall of Fame conditioner has not one, not two, but three of the five 2-year-olds in the lineup for the seven-furlong headliner that carries a $100,000 purse. It will go as the day's 8th race on a nine-race program that has a first post of 12:30 p.m.

The Baffert threesome consists of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, et al's Messier; Baoma Corp's Kamui, and HRH Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud's Winning Map.

The rest of the compact lineup is filled by Lovingier, London or Zondio's Rock N Rye and MyRacehorse.com and Spendthrift Farm's Forbidden Kingdom.

However, trainer Walther Solis indicating Friday morning that Rock N Rye would be scratched from the Hope in favor of a stakes for California breds later on.

Baffert is the king of the 2-year-old set at Del Mar – and he's some degree of royalty at other tracks around the country in that regard, too. By way of example locally, he's won Del Mar's top race for 2-year-olds, the Del Mar Futurity, 14 times. When it comes to the Bob Hope, which has been run locally seven times, Baffert has headed to the winner's circle after it four times already.

Here's the full field in post-position order with riders and morning line odds:

  1. Messier (Flavien Prat, 8/5)
  2. Kamui (Abel Cedillo, 5/2)
  3. Winning Map (Mike Smith, 7/5)
  4. Rock N Rye (Umberto Rispoli, 15-1)
  5. Forbidden Kingdom (Juan Hernandez, 9/2)

Favored Winning Map has run only once, but, not surprisingly, it was a dandy. The gray colt by Liam's Map scooted six furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:10.20 on October 3 to win by better than four lengths at 2-5. He's put in a series of solid works since.

Messier clicked by more than six lengths in his second start October 22 at Santa Anita in the same 1:10.20 for six furlongs. He's a bay colt by Empire Maker.

Stablemate Kamui, a Quality Road offspring, was a six-length winner at Los Alamitos on September 11 in his most recent outing.

Forbidden Kingdom, a son of Triple Crown champion American Pharoah, scored at first asking at Del Mar on August 21, then came back to run third in the Speakeasy Stakes on the grass at Santa Anita on October 1. He's trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Richard Mandella.
