Santa Anita’s ‘Folds of Honor’ Raises Over $40K for Charity

After racing on Memorial Day, jockeys, trainers, owners, and racing fans played in Santa Anita's third annual 'Folds of Honor' charity poker tournament, which raised more than $40,000 to benefit spouses and children of fallen or disabled veterans.

“After a long and exhilarating weekend, it was fantastic to see this kind of support for our veterans and their families,” said Santa Anita Director of Marketing Andrew Arthur. “Folds of Honor is a tremendous charity and we're honored to be affiliated with them. We raised more money than we did last year and we're confident this is something we can continue to build upon. Sincere thanks to everyone who participated, it was a lot of fun.”

Among the horseman who participated were trainers Mark Glatt, Ryan Glatt, Doug O'Neill, and Ryan Hanson; and jockeys Geovanni Franco, Ricky Gonzalez, Edwin Maldonado, and Jessica Pyfer; while the tournament winner was former Breeders' Cup Chairman Tom Ludt.

“It was great to participate in this year's Folds of Honor tournament,” said Ludt. “The tournament is a great way to finish up the Memorial Day weekend because it raises money for military families. It was a lot of fun and I was very fortunate to get the right cards at the right time. Wonderful event and a great time. I'll be back next year to defend my bracelet.”

Folds of Honor Poker Tourney Set for May 29

Santa Anita will play host to a charity poker tournament following the live racing program this Sunday, May 29, at 5:45 p.m. PT to benefit the 'Folds of Honor' foundation. Folds of Honor seeks to support the families of fallen or disabled American military veterans and dependents adversely affected by war.

For the tournament, which will take place near the top of the stretch in the Baldwin Terrace Conference Room on the second floor of the grandstand, players will make a $300 donation and will be treated to a full night of No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em and a day at the races in Santa Anita's Stretch Run suites.

A similar Folds of Honor tournament this past October raised more than $50,000.

“We had great participation from horsemen and fans this past October and we're hoping to do even better this Saturday,” said Santa Anita Vice President and General Manager Nate Newby. “Memorial Day weekend is a time for reverence for millions of veterans and we're proud to be able to honor them and their families. This is a tremendous cause and we're honored to have Folds of Honor back here at Santa Anita.”

TVG’s Weaver Wins Inaugural Folds Of Honor Poker Tournament At Santa Anita

Santa Anita Park's inaugural “Folds of Honor” Charity Poker Tournament, held Saturday night following the races in the Arcadia, Calif., track's Player's Lounge, located above Clockers' Corner, was deemed a rousing success as more than $50,000 was raised to help provide scholarships to spouses and children of disabled or fallen American military veterans.

A large contingent of Santa Anita fans, jockeys, agents, owners, trainers, employees, and other racing industry personalities helped to make the event a success.

“We were very gratified with the turn-out and the support we were able to provide to Folds of Honor,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager Nate Newby. “One hundred percent of the money won went to the Folds of Honor Foundation. This is a tremendous cause and I think everyone senses we have an obligation to help the families of those who have given so much in the defense of our freedom. We look forward to expanding this event and hosting it again next year.”

Among those Santa Anita-based jockeys that participated last night were Joe Bravo, Abel Cedillo, Kyle Frey, Ricky Gonzalez, Juan Hernandez, Edwin Maldonado, Tiago Pereira, and Jessica Pyfer. Trainers included Vladimir Cerin, Ryan Hanson, Doug O'Neill, and Jonathan Wong.

Frank Mirahmadi, the Voice of Santa Anita, and TVG's Dave Weaver, who credited “beginner's luck” in making a winning “all-in” bet with Queen-Nine, off-suit, headed an enthusiastic group of Santa Anita employees and Thoroughbred owners.

The Folds of Honor Foundation, which has awarded more than 35,000 educational scholarships, was represented by retired United States Marine Corps Sergeant and P.O.W. Rocky Stickmann, who was one of 65 Americans taken hostage by Iranian extremists at the U.S. embassy in Teheran on Nov. 4, 1979. Stickman and his fellow Americans were held captive for 444 days until their release on the first day of Ronald Reagan's presidency on Jan. 20, 1981.
