European Champion Lady Aurelia Carrying First Foal By Curlin

Lady Aurelia, Europe's champion 2-year-old filly of 2016 and a two-time winner at the prestigious Royal Ascot meet, is pregnant for the first time to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, Stonestreet Farm's Barbara Banke confirmed to Racing Post.

The 6-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy met with Curlin for her first mating in 2019, but without a successful conception. Both horses were campaigned by the Stonestreet operation, and Banke owns Lady Aurelia while also maintaining a majority stake in Curlin, who stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky.

Fetal sex scanning determined that Lady Aurelia's 2021 foal is expected to be a colt.

Banke told Racing Post that Lady Aurelia's partner for the 2021 breeding season was still to be determined.

Lady Aurelia earned Europe's champion 2-year-old filly honors in 2016 with a debut maiden win at Keeneland, followed by a victory in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at the Royal Ascot meet, and a win in the G1 Prix Morny in France. She came back at three to win the Giant's Causeway Stakes at Keeneland, then she returned to Royal Ascot to take the G1 King's Stand Stakes, besting the world's top turf sprinters of any age or sex.

D'wildcat Speed, Lady Aurelia's dam, was bred to Triple Crown winner Justify for 2021, after failing to catch to the same stallion for the 2020 foaling season.

Beholder’s Yearling Filly Gets A Name: Karin With An I

The second foal out of four-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder, a filly by Curlin, has been given the name Karin With An I, owner Spendthrift Farm announced on Monday.

The name was chosen in honor of the later mother of Spendthrift president Eric Gustavson.

”My mom died the same year the filly was born,” Gustavson said. “Wayne (Hughes) so graciously suggested we name the filly after my mom. I tried her name, which is Karin, with the Jockey Club. There was already a Caren (Canada's 2016 Horse of the Year), so they rejected it. That's how I chose 'Karin With An I.”'

The name follows in the footsteps of Beholder's first foal, an Uncle Mo colt named Q B One who is training toward his debut start in Southern California. Beholder delivered her third foal, a War Front filly, on Jan. 12 at Spendthrift Farm, where the 10-year-old Henny Hughes mare resides, and she visited fellow Spendthrift resident Bolt d'Oro during the 2020 breeding season.

Curlin, a 16-year-old son of Smart Strike, stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $175,000. The two-time Horse of the Year is the sire of Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso, Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, and Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice, among many others.

UC Davis Launches Additional Equine DNA Tests

The UC Davis' Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) has released new tests for three equine conditions: Equine Familial Isolated Hypocalcemia (EFIH), Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS) and Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB) in Tennessee Walking Horses.

Undergraduate intern Izzie Hack was instrumental in discovering the genetic cause CSNB in Tennessee Walking Horses. The VGL can now test for the variant that is suspected to cause SCNB in Tennessee Walking Horses. This testing can help Tennessee Walking Horse owners and breeders identify affected horses and carriers that may produce affected foals.

The other tests the VGL can now test for are Equine Familial Isolated Hypocalcemia (EFIH) and Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS). EFIH causes involuntary contraction of muscles and seizures in Thoroughbred foals; it is fatal.  AIS causes genotypic males to have external female genitalia; affected horses generally have an underdeveloped uterus as well as underdeveloped, retained testes. Horses with AIS are infertile and act like stallions.

Additional information about each test is available.
