Mating Plans, presented by Spendthrift: Dixiana Farms

The TDN's popular annual series 'Mating Plans, presented by Spendthrift,' continues today in a conversation with Robert Tillyer, farm manager of William and Donna Shively's Dixiana Farm.

AMERICA'S TALE (9, Gio Ponti – America's Friend, by Unusual Heat) to be bred to Taiba

She's in foal to Jackie's Warrior and she's a Grade II winner. We thought Taiba was good value. He's a very attractive son of Gun Runner that won three Grade I races.

DIAMOND WOW (5, Lookin At Lucky – Patriotic Diamond, by Hat Trick {Jpn}) to be bred to Forte

A new mare to the broodmare band and one of four going to champion 2-year-old Forte. She's a multiple stakes winner and is graded stakes placed.

GRAND AVE GIRL (6, Runhappy – One More, by Holy Bull) to be bred to Jackie's Warrior

This multiple stakes winner is carrying her first foal by Jack Christopher.

LADY BRIELLE (6, Tapit – Tabarin, by El Prado {Ire}) to be bred to Gunite

This daughter of Tapit is in foal to Cyberknife. She had a nice update in the family with her half-sister producing the GII Golden Rod winner Intricate (Gun Runner). We are breeding her on the same cross.

LAYLA (10, Union Rags – I'm a Flake, by Mineshaft) to be bred to Constitution

Layla had a mention last year [See those 2023 mating plans here]. She's the full-sister to GISW Express Train. Her first foal, Gran Orca (Liam's Map), has now had two impressive wins in Japan. He was the highest-priced Liam's Map in 2022, selling for $625,000. She is due to have a Flightline foal at the end of February.

Sold It's filly by Quality Road | Dixiana Farm

SACRED LUNA (12, Maliby Moon – Sacred Feather, by Carson City) to be bred to Uncle Mo

This half-sister to MGSW Taareef (Kitten's Joy) produced an Oscar Performance colt that sold last September Keeneland for $310,000.

SOLD IT (8, The Factor – -Charade, by Maliby Moon) to be bred to Cody's Wish

The farm has a very nice Quality Road yearling filly out of this stakes-winning mare. She's in foal to Not This Time.

TRAIN TO ARTEMUS (6, Tapizar- Pay Day Kitten, by Kitten's Joy) to be bred to Into Mischief

Another new mare for the farm, purchased in November. She is a multiple stakes winner and is graded stakes placed.  She is a beautiful mare that will really compliment the Dixiana broodmare band.

Half-Sister To La Petite Coco One Of The Highlights Of The Goffs February Sale

La Petite Sissi (Ire) (Ivawood {Ire}) (lot 385), a half-sister to G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine La Petite Coco (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}), is one of the leading lots catalogued for the Goffs February Sale on Feb. 7-8. A total of 431 lots are spread across the two days featuring both Flat and National Hunt horses of all ages, with each session beginning at 10 a.m.

Wednesday's session begins with 2-year-olds, horses-in-training and stores followed by a weanling section with a wide variety of sires represented. Foals kick off Thursday's session, that will end with breeding stock from both codes.

Some lots of note include White Caviar (Fr) (Australia {GB}) (lot 360), a sister to G1 St Leger winner Galileo Chrome (Ire) (Australia {GB}); the stakes-placed Pretty Rebel (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) (lot 384); and Grade 3 chase winner Waitnsee (Ire) (Arctic Cosmos) (lot 392).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Following a phenomenal 2023 at Goffs–a year full of highlights which began with the February Sale reaffirming its market-leading status–we are delighted to present a catalogue of real quality and diversity under both codes for our first sale of the New Year.

“Goffs February is always very popular with breeders, pinhookers and end-users alike, and the Goffs team together with our friends at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing look forward to welcoming buyers from home and abroad to Kildare Paddocks to what we hope will be a strong start to our 2024 sales year.”

The print edition of the catalogue will be available next week.

Sire Polarisation Continues At Goffs December

Tuesday's session featured Walk In The Park (Ire) as the sire of the top three lots at the Goffs December National Hunt Sale, and Wednesday's trade reflected much the same story, with that aforementioned sire responsible for two of the three top lots. However, it was No Risk At All (Fr)'s lot 605 that stole the show, when Glenvale Stud made a winning bid of €120,000 to top the session.

Out of the Kayf Tara (GB) mare Hidden Harmony (Ire), the colt, the only one by his sire in the catalogue, entered the ring midway through the session. Consigned by Galbertstown Stables, the bay is a grandson of Shirley Casper (Ire) (Presenting {GB}), who won a Grade 2 NH Flat race, and was third in the G1 Paddy Power Champion INH Flat Race, as well as taking the G3 EBF Mares Novice Final Hurdle. The colt is from the family of G1 Irish Grand National H. Chase winner Thunder And Roses (Ire), a full-sister to his second dam.

Colts by Walk In The Park brought €88,000 and €82,000 from Tally-Ho Stud and Redpender Stud, respectively. Lot 543, part of the Yellowford & Drumlin consignment, is from the same female line as Grade 1-winning hurdlers Best Mate (Ire) (Un Desperado {Fr}) and Cornish Rebel (Ire) (Un Desperado {Fr}).

The third highest price was lot 557, who was consigned by Ballintry Stud. He is the first foal out of listed hurdle winner Getaway Gorgeous (Ire) (Getaway {Ger}), who was second in the G2 Island H. Hurdle.

Of the 208 horses offered, 121 sold (58%). The gross was €2,139,600. Both the average and median showed improvement from fewer sold from those lots sent through the ring than last year, with the average up 8% to €17,683. The median rose by 14% to €12,000.

Thursday's session will see foals, broodmares, and breeding prospects go under the hammer from 10 a.m. local time.

Walk In The Park Reigns At Goffs December

Walk In The Park (Ire) sired four of the six highest foals and the three top lots, as the Goffs December National Hunt Sale continued on Tuesday.

Ballincurrig House Stud consigned lot 294, a son of Appy Days (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}), and he caught the eyes of Gerry Aherne and Charles Shanahan for €90,000. His dam is out of G3 Nell Gwyn S. heroine A-To-Z (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}).

Said the colt's breeder Cathal Ennis, “I've had my fair share of setbacks and bred enough slow ones too. I'm not saying I'm successful at all, but if there's one thing I am very fussy about, rightly or wrongly, it's broodmare sires.

“I love mares by King's Theatre, Presenting, Saint Des Saints and so on. I set a lot of store by them. Look at Saddlers' Hall, who was disappointing as a sire, but his daughters were dynamite.”

Second on the list was Castlefarm Stud's son of Ard Abhainn (Ire) (lot 296), who sold for €80,000 to Kevin Ross Bloodstock and Killeen Glebe. His dam, a daughter of Jeremy, won a listed race over hurdles.

Rounding out the top trio was a bay colt (lot 226) from the draft of Thistletown Stud. Snapped up by Rathmore Stud for €80,000, he is out of the Shirocco (Ger) mare Valjan (GB), herself a half-sister to G1 Champion Hurdle winner Katchi (Ire) (Kalanisi {Ire}).

At the close of trade, 132 lots sold (58%) for a gross of €2,157,800. The average remained almost even with 2022's at €16,347, and the median rose €20% to €12,000.
