Medina Spirit Named Florida-Bred Horse of the Year

Medina Spirit (Protonico) was named the 2021 Florida-bred Horse of the Year in a vote by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association board of directors and announced at the FTBOA Awards Gala held Monday night at the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala.

Bred in Florida by Gail Rice, who was honored with her second consecutive Needles Award Monday evening as the Association's small breeder of the year, and Medina Spirit's dam Mongolian Changa (Brilliant Speed) was also named the FTBOA Broodmare of the Year in a vote by the board.

Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg's Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) was the most decorated Florida-bred on the night having been named the Florida-bred Champion 3-Year-Old Male, Florida-bred Champion Sprinter and Florida-bred Champion Male Turf Horse.

Trained by Wesley Ward, Golden Pal became the first Florida-bred to win two Breeders' Cup events when he dominated the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar. In 2020, the first foal out of Lady Shipman (Midshipman) won the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint at Keeneland.

Other winners from FTBOA's Awards Gala included: Shifty She (Gone Astray), Champion Turf Female and Older Mare; Pappacap (Gun Runner), Champion 2-Year-Old Colt; Outfoxed (Valiant Minister), Champion 2-Year-Old Filly; Livingmybestlife (The Big Beast), Champion 3-Year-Old Filly; Firenze Fire (Poseidon's Warrior), Champion Older Male; Sound Machine (Into Mischief), Champion Female Sprinter; Khozan, Stallion of the Year; Live Oak Stud, Breeder of the Year.

Starship Jubilee Named Florida HOTY

Starship Jubilee (Indy Wind), a three-time Sovereign Award winner and Canada's Horse of the Year in 2019, was named Florida-bred Horse of the Year by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association. She also took home honors ad the Florida-bred champion older female and champion turf female for the third time in four years.

Owned by Adam Corndorf and Bonnie Baskin's Blue Heaven Farm and trained by Kevin Attard, Starship Jubilee won her first four starts as a 7-year-old, taking the GIII Suwannee River S., the GII Hillsborough S. and GII Ballston Spa S. at Saratoga before finishing fourth to champion Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the GI Diana S. The bay bounced back with a defeat of the boys in the GI Woodbine Mile, but stumbled at the start of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, unseating jockey Florent Geroux. The bay mare earned better than $921,000 in 2020 and her career earnings of $2,093,069 ranks as the sixth-most by a Florida-bred female and she is the 35th richest Florida-bred in history. Starship Jubilee's dam Perfectly Wild (Forest Wildcat) was named broodmare of the year.

Other divisional winners included:

2-year-old male: Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), winner of the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint;

2-year-old female: Princess Secret (Khozan), victorious in the 2020 Susan's Girl S. and My Dear Girl S. in the Florida Stallion Stakes series;

3-year-old male: GI Bing Crosby S. hero Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy);

3-year-old filly: Speech (Mr Speaker), winner of the GI Central Bank Ashland S.

Champion Sprinter/Older Male: C Z Rocket (City Zip);

Champion Female Sprinter: Lady's Island (Greatness)

Champion Turf Male: March to the Arch (Arch)

FTBOA Names 2019 Florida-bred Champions

The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association has announced its Florida-bred champions for 2019.

For the 16th time in FTBOA history, Charlotte Weber was honored with a Florida-bred champion that was bred by her Live Oak Stud and owned by her Live Oak Plantation as Global Access (Giant’s Causeway) was named the Florida-bred champion 3-year-old colt or gelding. Live Oak Stud was also named the Florida Breeder of the Year for the third time and the Leading Owner by Florida-bred earnings for the fourth time.

Global Access won the 2019 GIII Saranac S., GIII Marine S. and GIII Ontario Derby, and was also named champion 3-year-old colt in Canada.

Blue Heaven Farm’s Starship Jubilee (Indy Wind), heroine of last year’s GI E. P. Taylor S., was named champion older female and champion female turf horse. Bred by William P. Sorren, the 7-year-old mare received Sovereign Awards as Canada’s Horse of the Year and champion female turf horse in 2019.

Shooting Star Thoroughbreds’ Chance It (Currency Swap) garnered the champion 2-year-old colt or gelding title after winning the FTBOA Florida Sire S. Dr. Fager and the FTBOA Florida Sire S. In Reality. He was bred by Bett Usher.

K P Dreamin (Union Rags) was named the Florida-bred champion 2-year-old filly. She was third in both the GI Chandelier S. at Santa Anita and the GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos. Owned by Karl Pergola, K P Dreamin was bred in Florida by Peter Vegso’s Vegso Racing Stable.

William Stiritz’s Wildwood’s Beauty (Kantharos) used the Florida Sire S. program for older horses and Florida-bred stakes to catapult herself to the title as the Florida-bred champion 3-year-old filly and champion female sprinter. She was bred by Philip and Karen Matthews.

In the stallion categories, Journeyman Stud’s Khozan was Florida’s leading juvenile sire and leading freshman sire, while Ocala Stud resident Adios Charlie was Florida’s stallion of the year.

Kathleen O’Connell and Saffie Joseph, Jr., tied with 58 Florida-bred wins at Florida tracks while O’Connell was also the leading Florida trainer of Florida-breds by black-type stakes wins with six, and Joseph was the leading Florida trainer by Florida-bred earnings with $1,977,046.

The Joe O’Farrell Memorial Award presented by Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company went to William A.T. and Lyn Rainbow’s The Acorn as the original consignor of Starship Jubilee, the year’s top Florida-bred graduate of OBS.

Sally J. Andersen was presented the Needles Award as Florida’s small breeder of the year. Andersen bred multiple stakes winner Anyportinastorm (City Zip).
