Flawless, Dam Of Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner Authentic, Supplemented Into Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Flawless, the dam of Breeders' Cup Classic winner and Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, has been supplemented to Sunday's Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Cataloged as Hip 288, she will be consigned by Bridie Harrison, agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds.

A daughter of Mr. Greeley, Flawless is in foal to Into Mischief on a Feb. 18 cover carrying a full sibling to Authentic.

Authentic has captured six of eight career starts to date at two and three, including three Grade 1 wins in 2020 — the Haskell Stakes, the Kentucky Derby, and Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic over one of the deepest fields in the history of the race. He went gate-to-wire to defeat Grade 1 winners Improbable, Global Campaign, Maximum Security, Tiz the Law, Tom's d'Etat, and Higher Power by 2 1/4 lengths in a track record time of 1:59.19 for the mile-and-a-quarter. He is a five-time graded stakes winner of $6,191,200.

Flawless hails from a deep female family of top producers, including Holiday Runner, the dam or granddam of Grade 1 winners Seventh Street, Reynaldothewizard, and American Gal.

“Flawless is an exciting late addition to our November Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “Authentic is just the fourth horse ever to win the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic in the same year, and she is carrying his full sibling. To be able to add a mare of Flawless's qualifications to our sale on the eve of the auction is unprecedented and provides buyers one of the more unique buying opportunities in recent memory.”

The Fasig-Tipton November Sale will be conducted Nov. 8 beginning at 2 p.m. in Lexington, Ky. Online bidding and phone bidding are available.

Bloodlines Presented By Gary Contessa’s Integrity Bloodstock: Authentic, Flawless Reward Blum’s Faith With Kentucky Derby Roses

In the normal scheme of Peter Blum's breeding program, he's quite as likely to be planning progeny of a female line he's had for four or five generations, perhaps more. To produce Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, however, Blum sent the broodmare Flawless, only a first-generation “Blum-bred,” to the high-class stallion Into Mischief (by Harlan's Holiday) back in the spring of 2016.

The breeder did note, however, that he “had some experience with this family that made me want to buy [second dam] Oyster Baby, who was a lovely mare” and one who produced a beautiful foal in Flawless, the dam of the Kentucky Derby winner.

Nor was this the only unusual factor in Flawless being a part of the Blum broodmare band. The decades-long experience that Blum has with racing and breeding has encouraged him to balance the books whenever possible, and he sells his better stock, especially colts, at premium sales around the country.

Since he typically keeps some of the fillies, Blum bought back Flawless for $285,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale. It looked like a damned good idea after that good-looking daughter of leading sire Mr. Greeley had won her maiden impressively by 13 1/4 lengths at Belmont Park. Flawless, however, bowed a tendon in her second start, gaining no black type, and after Blum and trainer Bill Mott had rehabbed the filly and returned her to training, the tendon flared up again and made it necessary to retire her permanently. The mare's dam, the Wild Again mare Oyster Baby, was unraced and produced only three foals before her death at age seven.

As a result, Authentic went to the sales with two blank dams. This is the bugaboo of commercial breeders because nearly all buyers want to purchase performance, black-type performance, not its absence. Blum said, “People were questioning why I'd keep her: she didn't win a stakes, would catalog with two blank dams, and I told Bill Mott that I'd have a lot of trouble selling foals out of this mare, but he said, 'Sell all the other mares and keep this one.'”

Blum kept Flawless, in particular, he said, because “I've had some really good fillies over the years, but I've never had a filly who was as brilliant; as far as speed goes, nothing compared to Flawless.”

The 2017 colt out of Flawless, when he came to the sales, was a striking yearling. Even as a May foal, Authentic possessed the body mass and length to suggest that he was on the way to becoming a serious athlete. He had enough scope and presence to appeal to horsemen looking for athletic prospects, either to race or to resell, and once the bidding started for the handsome bay, it reached $350,000 before all others gave up and allowed a partnership of SF Bloodstock and Starlight West to sign the ticket for the colt.

Sent into training with Bob Baffert, Authentic won his debut on Nov. 9 last year at Del Mar and made his stakes debut on Jan. 4 of the new year in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, which he won like a very good thing, indeed. To date, the bay colt has won five of his six starts and notably filled out his dam's lack of black type on the pedigree page.

Authentic is the fourth foal and third winner out of Flawless. The others sold profitably, but he was the mare's first foal to make a seriously impressive price at $350,000. That's a really good figure for a yearling with two blank dams, no matter what he looks like, and that sum also was the second-highest among all the yearlings sold on the second day of the September sale's Book 3 (session 8 overall) in 2018.

The Kentucky Derby winner has a 2-year-old half-brother named Mint (Bodemeister) who is yet unraced, as well as a yearling half-brother, also by Bodemeister, who has been named Push Button. Blum said that he was retaining the two half-brothers to race. Flawless was bred back to Into Mischief for 2021 and is in foal on a February cover.

That cover date guarantees that the full brother to Authentic will not be a May foal like the Derby winner. In an interesting aside to the biases of the commercial market, last year's Kentucky Derby winner Country House, first-place finisher Maximum Security, last year's English Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, and this year's Kentucky Derby winner are all May foals.

When the foal from Flawless arrives in late January, Blum noted, he will go into exactly the same program as his big brother. He said, “Bridie, her family and staff, we've been together a lot of years. They deserve all the credit for raising Authentic and a lot of other fine horses,” Blum said. “She doesn't tell me what I want to hear, but we think a lot alike.”

And then Blum summed up what it means to breed a winner of the Kentucky Derby: “When he was in the winner's circle, it was a special moment. Winning the Derby isn't something you really think you're going to do. It's a once in a lifetime thing, but I don't know if I'd be any happier if I'd kept him. We breed and sell horses. To be able to breed and sell a Derby winner; you can't get a better endorsement than that. I don't believe I could be any happier.”

Kentucky Derby Pedigree Corner: Tiz the Law, Authentic, Honor A. P., And Ny Traffic

Each day of Kentucky Derby week, we'll take a look at the pedigrees of the Kentucky Derby contenders and how those pedigrees might factor into their ability to succeed at a mile and a quarter.

Tiz the Law
Constitution x Tizfiz, by Tiznow
Tiz the Law is the easiest horse in the field to gauge at the classic distance, given his dominating 5 ½-length romp at a mile and a quarter in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes. Looking at his pedigree though, there are several factors proving he wasn't outrunning his bloodlines.

The colt is from the first crop of fast-rising sire Constitution, who won the G1 Florida Derby and Donn Handicap, both at a mile and an eighth. Constitution is a son of Tapit, who is one of North America's most proven sire of two-turn runners, including three Belmont Stakes winners.

The average distance of a race won by a Constitution runner (Average Winning Distance) is 6.92 furlongs, which is the bottom half among the sires of the Derby field, though Tiz the Law's previous Grade 1 triumph at a mile and a quarter dispels any concerns with this individual.

Beyond Tiz the Law, Constitution's best runners have tended to be milers, with Laura's Light taking the G2 San Clemente Stakes and Independence Hall taking the Jerome Stakes at the distance. However, Laura's Light also took the G3 Honeymoon Stakes at a 1 1/8 miles and Gouverneur Morris finished second in the G1 Arkansas Derby, both at 1 1/8 miles. Tiz the Law is Constitution's first graded stakes winner beyond a mile and an eighth, though that's not a major concern, given the early stage of the sire's career.

Tiz the Law is out of the Tiznow mare Tizfiz, who won the G2 San Gorgorino Handicap over the turf at 1 1/8 miles. The turf specialist also won non-graded stakes at distances between a 1 mile and 1 1/8 miles

Tizfiz is also the dam of Awestruck, a multiple stakes-placed daughter of Tapit who won from six furlongs to a mile on the dirt. She earned stakes-placings going as far as a 1 1/16 miles. Tizn'tshebeautiful, by Uncle Mo, was a maiden winner going 1 mile and 70 yards at Finger Lakes.

Authentic
Into Mischief x Flawless, by Mr. Greeley

Into Mischief was North America's leading general sire by earnings in 2019, and has established himself as one of the continent's top commercial sires.

He remains a force in 2020 with a slate of runners that includes multiple Grade 1 winner Gamine, who has won at the highest level at seven furlongs and a mile. He is also the sire of two-time Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents, as well as Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Covfeve, who was named last year's champion female sprinter and champion 3-year-old filly. The stallion's average progeny winning distance is 6.75 furlongs, which is near the bottom of this year's class of Derby sires.

Into Mischief's most notable Derby starter to date is Audible, who finished third in the 2018 renewal, coming in off a victory in the G1 Florida Derby at 1 1/8 miles.

On his own accord, Into Mischief won the G1 CashCall Futurity going a mile and a sixteenth over a synthetic track. Never worse than second in six career starts, Into Mischief also won the listed Damascus Stakes at 7 furlongs over an all-weather surface.

Flawless, a daughter of Mr. Greeley, won on debut at 7 furlongs over the main track at Belmont Park, then finished second finished second at the same track going a mile to finish her racing career.

Authentic is by far the most successful runner out of Flawless, with the next closest by earnings being Expectations, a Speightstown gelding who won claiming races from seven furlongs to a mile. Gitgo, by Bodemeister, was a maiden claiming winner at 5 ½ furlongs before being exported to Panama, where he has complied a lifetime record of six wins from 44 starts.

Honor A. P.
Honor Code x Hollywood Story, by Wild Rush
Honor Code has strong credentials around two turns, winning the 1 1/8-mile G2 Remsen Stakes at age two, then earning champion older male honors at four with a campaign including a score in the G1 Whitney Stakes, also at 1 ½ miles. Honor Code's championship season also included wins at a mile in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap and G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap. He is a son of A.P. Indy, who is one of the modern breed's bedrocks for distance runners.

Honor Code's runners post an average winning distance of 7.29 furlongs, which is a strong number for a sire with his first crop of 3-year-olds. He'll have two colts pointing toward this year's Kentucky Derby, with Honor A. P. having won the G1 Santa Anita Derby at 1 1/8 miles and Max Player winning the G3 Withers Stakes at the same distance. Max Player is also placed at the Derby distance, having run third in the G1 Travers Stakes in August.

Hollywood Story ran in nothing but graded stakes races after her debut effort. She won the G1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes as a juvenile at 1 1/16 miles, and she took the G1 Vanity Invitational Handicap over 1 1/8 miles later in her career. Her other two graded wins came at 1 1/16 miles.

A veteran broodmare with five runners sporting six-figure earnings, Hollywood Story is also the dam of Horrayforhollywood, by Storm Cat, who was a winner and stakes-placed at a mile. Hollywood Star, a son of Malibu Moon, finished a narrow second in the G3 Iroquois Stakes over 1 1/16 miles, while his full-sister Miss Hollywood is a stakes winner at 7 furlongs.

Removing Tiz the Law's victory in the Travers from consideration, no other horse in this field is better-qualified to excel at the classic distance in terms of pedigree than Honor A. P., both by high-level output and two-turn performance.

Ny Traffic
Cross Traffic x Mamie Reilly, by Graeme Hall

Cross Traffic was proficient at a route distance, highlighted by a win in the G1 Whitney Invitational Handicap at 1 1/8 miles. He also finished second in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap and G3 Westchester Stakes, both at 1 mile.

He was the leading freshman sire of 2018, spearheaded by Eclipse Award winner Jaywalk, who took the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at 1 1/16 miles. His average progeny winning distance is 6.86 furlongs, putting him on the lower end of this year's Derby sires. However, Cross Traffic has been represented well at a mile and a quarter by Capocostello, who won Panama's G1 Clásico Año Nuevo at the distance.

Ny Traffic would be Cross Traffic's first Kentucky Derby starter.

Mamie Reilly raced twice, graduating on her second try in a 6 furlong maiden claiming race at Belmont Park. Ny Traffic is her first foal.

Ny Traffic's extended family is heavy on South American influence, led by third dam Quilma, who won the Chilean 1,000 Guineas before being imported to the U.S., where she became a Grade 2 winner.
