Mo Forza Flies Late For Second Consecutive City Of Hope Mile Score

Unhurried early under Flavien Prat, Mo Forza closed with a furious rush to nail front-running Smooth Like Strait in the final strides of Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 City of Hope Mile Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. The 5-year-old horse by Uncle Mo out of Inflamed, by Unusual Heat, was winning his fourth consecutive graded stakes – including last year's City of Hope Mile –  and eighth race overall from 14 starts.

Smooth Like Strait, who went to the lead under Umberto Rispoli, then allowed Red Storm Risen to head him in the run down the backstretch, edged a fast-closing Hit the Road for second as the 9-5 second choice. Hit the Road, off at 5-1, was well clear of Red Storm Risen in fourth and Order and Law completed the order of finish.

Trained by Peter Miller and owned by Bardy Farm and OG Boss, Mo Forza was bred in Kentucky by the late trainer Barry Abrams in the name of his Bardy Farm.

Mo Forza covered the mile on firm turf in 1:32.45 after fractions of :22.61, :46.66, 1:08.98 and 1:20.57. He paid $3.20 to win.

Mo Forza was coming off a hard-fought head victory over Smooth Like Strait in the G2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 21, his first start since last year's City of Hope Mile. In this year's edition of the City of Hope, Prat settled Mo Forza at the back of the pack as Smooth Like Strait rushed up to take command early from the five post, holding a clear advantage while rounding the first turn.

In the run down the backstretch, Joe Bravo swung Red Storm Risen – who had broken from the rail post – to the outside and ranged up alongside Smooth Like Strait, taking a short lead into the far turn.

Prat, meanwhile, kept Mo Forza to the outside of Hit the Rail and Florent Geroux, and commenced a rally around the three-eighths pole. At midstretch, Smooth Like Strait looked home free, but in the blink of an eye Mo Forza pounced on the front-runner with Hit the Road racing to his outside.

Mo Forza closed with a rush, hitting the front in the final strides and looking like a serious contender for the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile to be held at Del Mar on Nov. 6.

Lady Mystify on Top in Remington Oaks

Lady Mystify came from just off the pace to score an easy victory in the GIII Remington Park Oaks Sunday night. The bay filly, who had set the pace in her last three outings, was caught some three wide into the first turn and continued three wide down the backstretch while always within striking distance as My Girl Red (Texas Red) took the field through fractions of :23.60 and :47.29. Lady Mystify rolled up to grab the lead approaching the top of the stretch and was shadowed by Pauline's Pearl. She easily dispatched of that foe and strode clear as Pauline's Pearl just held off favored Amendment Nineteen despite drifting out and forcing that rival to angle in in deep stretch.

“We had a good trip,” said winning jockey Flavien Prat. “She broke well and it was nice to see her relax on the backside and take a breather and she responded for me down the lane. She always showed some talent and it was good to see her relax today.”

Stretched out to a mile in her third start, Lady Mystify romped home by 18 lengths Feb. 5. She returned five months later to win a one-mile allowance at Del Mar July 29, but faded to fifth after bleeding without Lasix in the Aug. 21 GIII Torrey Pine S.

Pedigree Notes:

Scott and Evan Dilworth purchased J. Quirk, in foal to Tiznow, for $260,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Her 2-year-old Beat Emotion (Quality Road), purchased for $190,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale, sold through Steve Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds for $600,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale.

J. Quirk produced a filly by Gun Runner this year and was bred back to Game Winner.

Lady Mystify's third dam, Cee's Song, produced champion Tiznow and multiple graded winner Budroyale, as well as the dam of Grade I winner Paynter and the dam of GI Preakness S. winner Oxbow.

Lady Mystify Gets First Graded Stakes Win In Remington Park Oaks

Lady Mystify made the trip from California to Oklahoma a winning one with a pace-stalking performance in the Grade 3 Remington Park Oaks at the Oklahoma City, Okla., track.

In her only previous try at graded stakes company, Lady Mystify, trained by Peter Eurton, was fifth in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. in late August. In the G3 Oaks, facing a field that included G3 Fantasy Stakes winner Pauline's Pearl and Cathryn Sophia Stakes winner Lovely Ride, Lady Mystify broke cleanly, jockey Flavien Prat putting her third behind front-runner My Girl Red early in the 1 1/16-mile stakes.

Around the far turn, Prat pulled his filly even with My Girl Red as Ricardo Santana, Jr. moved Pauline's Pearl on the outside of horses to start her bid in the stretch. At the top of the lane, Lady Mystify took over the lead as Pauline's Pearl tried to challenge on her outside. The Eurton trainee was too much for Pauline's Pearl, drawing away to win by three lengths. Amendment Nineteen was third and Bobbin Tail fourth.

The final time for the G3 Remington Park Oaks was 1:44.13. Find this race's chart here.

Lady Mystify paid $14.00, $5.00, and $2.80. Pauline's Pearl paid $2.80 and $2.10. Amendment Nineteen paid $2.10.

Bred in Kentucky by Scott Dilworth and Evan Dilworth, Lady Mystify is by Bernardini out of the Unbridled's Song mare J. Quirk. She is a 3-year-old filly owned by Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing, and Richard Hausman. Lady Mystify was purchased by Exline-Border Racing from consigner Niall Brennan Stables for $325,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. With her win in the G3 Remington Park Oaks, Lady Mystify has three wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 6-3-1-1 and career earnings of $217,520.

Hot Rod Charlie Survives Inquiry To Win Pennsylvania Derby

The last time they met, Midnight Bourbon clipped Hot Rod Charlie's heels and stumbled in the stretch of the Grade 1 Haskell, shedding rider Paco Lopez and costing Hot Rod Charlie his first G1 stakes win. In the Pennsylvania Derby, Hot Rod Charlie once again tangled with Midnight Bourbon, as the Doug O'Neill trainee almost blew the far turn, getting close enough to Midnight Bourbon in the process that the result yet again went to the stewards. This time, though, Hot Rod Charlie got the decision, getting his first Grade 1 victory at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Penn.

At the break, Hot Rod Charlie with Flavien Prat took the early lead, with Midnight Bourbon and Ricardo Santana, Jr. to his outside, three-quarters of a length back. The two dueled on the front around the first turn and into the backstretch, with Speaker's Corner and Weyburn three lengths back. Hot Rod Charlie kept his advantage throughout, with Midnight Bourbon staying close to him as they rounded the far turn.

With the field still several lengths back, Hot Rod Charlie, running a couple of paths off the rail, went wide out of the far turn, Prat having to take up on him to keep him from blowing the turn altogether. That move took Midnight Bourbon still wider, but Prat was able to straighten his colt out as Midnight Bourbon kept pressuring the leader down the stretch. Hot Rod Charlie was too much for Midnight Bourbon, pulling away to a 2 1/4-length victory.

Immediately after the race, Santana, Jr. lodged a claim of foul for interference against Prat and Hot Rod Charlie. The inquiry sign went up as well, but ultimately the Parx stewards decided to keep the order of finish intact.

The final time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.63. Find this race's chart here.

Hot Rod Charlie paid $3.80, $2.60, and $2.10. Midnight Bourbon paid $3.60 and $2.40. Americanrevolution paid $3.00.

Bred in Kentucky by Edward A. Cox, Jr., Hot Rod Charlie is by Oxbow out of the Indian Charlie mare Indian Miss. He is owned by Roadrunner Racing, William Strauss, Boat Racing, and Gainesway Stable. Hot Rod Charlie was consigned by Small Batch Sales and purchased by Dennis O'Neill at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale for $110,000. With his win in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby, the 3-year-old colt has two wins in six starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 11-3-2-3 and career earnings of $2,171,200.
