Curlin Filly Tops OBS Spring Sale’s Third Session

Hip No. 830, a daughter of Curlin consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC for $670,000 to top the third session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday's under tack session, is out of graded stakes winner Funny Proposition, by Medaglia d'Oro, a daughter of stakes winner Humorous Miss.

Hip No. 644, a son of Flatter also consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Lauren Carlisle, Agent & Myracehorse.com for $625,000. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth at Thursday's under tack session in :10 1/5, is a full brother to stakes winner Search Results, recent winner of Aqueduct's Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes, out of graded stakes placed Co Cola, by Candy Ride (ARG), from the family of millionaire Grade 1-winning OBS graduate Mind Your Biscuits.

Hip No. 786, a son of Pioneerof the Nile consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Gayle Van Leer, Agent, for $575,000. The dark bay or brown colt, whose quarter in :20 4/5 into a stiff headwind was the fastest work at the distance at Thursday's under tack session, is out of Fancy Day (IRE), by Shamardal, a daughter of graded stakes winner Tizdubai, a full sister to champion Tiznow.

Hip No. 744, a son of Curlin consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Mike Ryan, Agent, for $425,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked an eighth in :10 2/5 on Thursday, is a half brother to Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Drefong out of Eltimaas, by Ghostzapper, a half sister to Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Action This Day.

For the day, 155 horses brought a total of $14,491,000, compared with 163 selling for a total of $11,151,000 at last year's third session. The average price was $93,490, up 36.6 percent compared to $68,411 in 2020 while the median price was $50,000, compared with $40,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.8 percent; it was 18.5 percent last year.

The Spring Sale concludes Friday at 10:30 a.m. Hip No.'s 913 – 1217 will be offered for sale.

Brown Works Kentucky Oaks Candidate Search Results At Belmont

Klaravich Stables undefeated Search Results, last-out winner for trainer Chad Brown of the Grade 3, $250,000 Gazelle on April 3 at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y., worked a half-mile in 48.33 seconds Saturday on the Belmont Park main track in preparation for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on Friday, April 30, at Churchill Downs.

Brown said he was impressed with the work by Search Results, who breezed in company with New York-bred sophomore filly Teetotaler.

“She put in one of the best works I've seen from her, so I think she's come out of her last race in really good shape,” said Brown. “She went in 48 and change and did it really nicely. I thought she galloped out strong.”

The Flatter filly, a $310,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, has posted successive 92 Beyer Speed Figures, including a half-length score in the one-turn mile Busher Invitational on March 6 at the Big A ahead of her two-turn debut in the Gazelle.

“We were cautiously optimistic she could handle the two-turns but you never know until you see them do it,” said Brown, who conditioned Lewis Bay to a third-place finish in the 2016 Kentucky Oaks. “It was nice to see her do it so well and it gives us a lot of confidence going over to Churchill to run at the same mile and an eighth distance.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. will retain the mount in the nine-furlong Kentucky Oaks.

The Klaravich Stables duo of Crowded Trade and Risk Taking worked in company through a half-mile in 47.55 Saturday on Big Sandy.

Both horses are exiting the Grade 2 Wood Memorial presented by Resorts World Casino on April 3 where they finished third and seventh, respectively.

“Risk Taking took some dirt but he really didn't have any excuse, he just didn't fire,” said Brown. “Crowded Trade, he missed the break a bit, and that might have cost him a little bit but he had an opportunity to run down the lane and he ran really well.”

Brown said Crowded Trade is aiming towards a start in the Grade 1 Preakness, second leg of the Triple Crown, on May 15 at Pimlico Race Course. Brown captured the 2017 Preakness with Cloud Computing.

Boasting a perfect in-the-money record in three starts, Crowded Trade won at first asking in January at Aqueduct ahead of a narrow nose defeat to Weyburn in the one-turn mile Grade 3 Gotham in March. Last out, the More Than Ready chestnut closed well to be third in the Wood.

Risk Taking, a $240,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, captured the nine-furlong Grade 3 Withers in February at Aqueduct ahead of a seventh in the Wood Memorial as the post-time favorite. The Medaglia d'Oro bay is targeting a start in the Grade 3, $200,000 Peter Pan on May 8 at Belmont.

“They both seem to have bounced out of the Wood in fine shape,” said Brown . “We'll monitor them week to week, but they were moving well. I'm leaning towards the Preakness for Crowded Trade and with Risk Taking I'm leaning towards the Peter Pan.”

Brown will be represented in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby by Klaravich Stables' Highly Motivated, who will work at Keeneland on Sunday. The Into Mischief bay, a $240,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, graduated at second asking at Belmont in September ahead of winning the 6 1/2-furlong Nyquist at Keeneland in November.

Following a third in the Grade 3 Gotham in his seasonal debut, Highly Motivated gave likely Derby favorite Essential Quality a test in the Grade 2 Blue Grass on April 3 at Keeneland, battling the 2-year-old champion down the lane en route to a narrow neck loss.

“He'll work a half-mile at Keeneland tomorrow,” said Brown. “I thought he ran terrific in the Blue Grass and he came out of it good.”

Brown's previous Kentucky Derby starters include Good Magic [2nd, 2018], Practical Joke [5th, 2017], Shagaf [20th, 2016], My Man Sam [11th, 2016] and Normandy Invasion [4th, 2013].

Unbeaten Search Results Atop Kentucky Oaks Leaderboard After Gazelle Victory

Klaravich Stables' Search Results remained undefeated in three starts with a facile score in Saturday's Grade 3, $250,000 Gazelle at Aqueduct racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

The Flatter filly, who earned 100 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points in victory, entered the nine-furlong test from a half-length score in the Busher Invitational going a one-turn mile. She earned a 92 Beyer for her Gazelle triumph and now tops the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with 150 points.

“She looks great this morning,” said Dan Stupp, trainer Chad Brown's New York-based assistant. “She ran well yesterday and she still has room to move forward. She certainly handled the distance well.”

The Brown-trained The Grass Is Blue, a Broken Vow chestnut owned by Louis Lazzinnaro, finished fourth in the Gazelle.

Brown saddled a pair of contenders for Klaravich Stables in the Wood Memorial with Crowded Trade rallying from eighth to finish third, while mutuel favorite Risk Taking bobbled at the start and finished seventh.

Crowded Trade entered the Wood from a nose defeat to Weyburn in the Grade 3 Gotham, while Risk Taking was made the Wood favorite on the back of a convincing score in the Grade 3 Withers.

“He tried and ran well,” said Stupp regarding Crowded Trade. “Everyone is fine this morning. We'll see what Chad wants to do moving forward with them.”

Not to be overshadowed on the Wood Memorial undercard was an impressive North American debut by Peter Brant's Flighty Lady in a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance. The 4-year-old Sir Percy filly finished third in the 2019 Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp and placed in a pair of Group 3 events last year in France.

Flighty Lady was prepared by Brown at Payson Park in Florida and demonstrated a powerful kick under Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the final sixteenth to win by two lengths.

“She shipped in middle of the week and looked fantastic,” said Stupp. “She is a very classy acting filly and well behaved in the paddock. She gave a good impression on race day and then ran to it. It was a very patient ride from Irad and she responded well. She's a very exciting turf prospect for us this year.”

Flighty Lady registered an 86 Beyer in victory.

Klaravich Stables' Highly Motivated, who finished third for Brown in the Grade 3 Gotham, was a game second in Saturday's Grade 2 Blue Grass at Keeneland. The Into Mischief bay battled gamely on the pace en route to a narrow neck defeat to undefeated Essential Quality, the reigning Champion 2-year-old colt. Highly Motivated is in 14th position in the Derby standings with 50 points.

Pass The Champagne Ready For ‘Big Step Up’ In Ashland

Trainer George Weaver almost made a run at the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in 2019, but his entrant, Point of Honor, did not have enough qualifying points.

On Saturday, Weaver will send out Pass the Champagne for her stakes debut in the $400,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1) at Keeneland, which carries 170 qualifying points toward the April 30 Oaks on a scale of 100-40-20-10 to the first- through fourth-place finishers.

“It is a big step up for her and first time going two turns,” Weaver said Friday morning after the Flatter filly galloped on the main track under exercise rider Nick Bush. “Rusty (Arnold) had her the first time she ran, and we liked what we saw in her debut. They (new owners) negotiated a price and bought her with an eye toward the Oaks if we could do it.”

Five weeks after her debut, Pass the Champagne scored her first career win by 2½ lengths for the new ownership group of R. A. Hill Stable, Black Type Thoroughbreds, Rock Ridge Racing, Black Ridge Stables and James Brown.

“We expected her to run well (in her second start),” said Weaver, who will have Javier Castellano aboard Pass the Champagne for the first time in Saturday's Central Bank Ashland. “We're going to give it a shot.”

After Point of Honor failed to make the Oaks, she went on to win the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) two weeks later. She would go on to place second in three Grade 1 races and earn more than $700,000.

“They are different horses but I think Pass the Champagne has more natural speed,” Weaver said. “They are both class acting fillies.”
