Flatter Colt Stays Perfect In Dubai

Panadol was an eye-catching 7 3/4-length debut winner going a mile at Meydan on a non-carnival card on Feb. 13, and he employed the same tactics in his second start and stakes debut on Saturday by going to the lead and never looking back.

Breaking on terms from the extreme outside barrier, Mickael Barzalona had guided Panadol to the lead by the time they passed under the wire the first time. The advantage down the backstretch was three-quarters of a length while Speight'spercomete (Speightstown) perched three-wide. The stalkers began to close in approaching the quarter pole and the Uruguayan invader El Patriota (Uru) (Ecologo {Arg}) began to make up ground, but none of them proved any match for Panadol, who kicked two lengths clear at the top of the lane. Speight'spercomete bravely saw off the challenge of El Patriota to secure runners-up honours, but Panadol was ultimately three-quarters of a length the best.

Said pilot Mickael Barzalona, “He is the kind of horse we want on this kind of surface, especially in Meydan. Today he felt even greener than on his first race, so I really appreciate that he had a second run this season before going for the UAE Derby. He does the distance well, he has got some good talent, and we will see whether he is able to perform on [Dubai] World Cup night.”

“He has only recently started with us,” said Salem bin Ghadayer. “We had two options with him, either to go directly to the (UAE) Derby or give him one more run, just to give him a little more experience. I spoke with HH Sheikh Hamdan and his opinion was to give him one more run. The horse showed that he could recover well. We hope to carry on till the last goal.”

Panadol is out of the winning Dixieland Band mare Arradoul, and he becomes her third stakes horse and first stakes winner, she having already produced the listed-placed Backwood Bay (Girolamo) and Permanent Vacation (Elusive Quality). Arradoul is a half-sister to the two-time listed winner and multiple group-placed Ender's Sister (A.P. Indy), who produced the GI Forego S. and GI Albert G. Vanderbilt H. winner A.P. Indian (Indian Charlie), as well as the GII Indiana Derby victor Tiz Shea D (Tiznow). Arradoul and Ender's Sister are also siblings to Ender's Shadow (A.P. Indy), a listed winner and Grade III-placed. Arradoul has a 2-year-old filly by Alpha named Alarra, and was bred to Runhappy and Audible in the past two seasons.

Flatter Colt Strolls in Meydan Unveiling

1st-Meydan, AED82,500, Maiden, 2-13, NH/SH 3yo, c/g, 1600m, 1:37.16, ft.
PANADOL (c, 3, Flatter-Arradoul, by Dixieland Band), making his racecourse bow in this spot, was not the quickest away, but soon established a half-length lead as the field exited the chute. Bowling along and doing it very easily, the blaze-faced colt's advantage shrank on the bend. He was challenged by Anbar (Bodemeister) at the head of the lane, but shrugged off that foe to win going away by 7 3/4 lengths. Endifaa (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) emerged late to be best of the rest, 1 3/4 lengths in front of Anbar, who held third in a blanket finish.

“He's a nice horse and did it very well today and showed good quality,” said jockey Mickael Barzalona. “At home, I got up on him in his last gallop and I could feel he was very green, but I was very pleased with him [today]. He was very professional. They asked me if I thought he could get farther and I think he can.”

Mouheeb To Bypass Saudi Derby

Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Mouheeb (Flatter), who extended his record to two wins from three starts when taking last week's G3 UAE 2000 Guineas by a neck, will decline an invitation to the $1.5-million Saudi Derby on Feb. 20 and train up to the G2 UAE Derby, worth $750,000, at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night on Mar. 27.

“He will head directly to the UAE Derby and miss the Saudi Derby,” Mohamed Saeed Al Shahi, racing manager for Sheikh Ahmed, told Tamarkuz Media. “He came out of the race well, but His Highness, myself and [trainer] Nicholas [Bachalard] felt he had two tough races and we need to give him a bit more time with the UAE Derby being his main target.”

Mouheeb broke his maiden at first asking at Jebel Ali on Dec. 18 before missing by a head when second to Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial on Jan. 14.

Bachalard added, “We thought he had room to progress between his races and he did. I wasn't sure how much, but he definitely has improved with every run. We think he can handle the added distance in the Derby. We were strongly considering the Saudi Derby, but we just felt that the race took too much out of him and we'll wait.”

‘Such A Fighter’: Mouheeb Sets Stakes Record In UAE 2,000 Guineas

Thursday's UAE 2,000 Guineas at Meydan Racecourse attracted a select field of just six, but produced a thrilling finish with Mouheeb leading in the dying strides to deny Meshakel who made a gallant effort from the front only to be thwarted. The 3-year-old son of Flatter prevailed by a neck on the wire, setting a stakes record in the process.

“I thought we would be a bit closer than we were, but (jockey) Ryan (Curatolo) rode a great race and the horse ran very well,” said winning trainer Nicholas Bachalard. “We are really happy because it's our first win at Meydan. We thought Zhou Storm would go to the lead (to battle Meshakel), but thankfully our horse ran Meshakel down just at the right time. It would have been a shame to get beaten by a head. We're delighted for the team and for Sheikh Ahmed for believing in us. It hasn't been an easy three years for the stable and now we can pay back some of the trust he had in us. (Mouheeb) still holds an invite for the Saudi Derby, but that's only 16 days, so we'll see how he comes out of the race and go from there.”

Slowly away on both his previous outings, a winning debut over 1200m (six furlongs) at Jebel Ali and just conquered in the UAE 2000 Guineas trial three weeks ago, over the same 1600m (one mile), Mouheeb broke alertly this time.

Settled in third by Curatolo, the Flatter colt was probably five lengths off the eventual runner-up entering the straight with Godolphin's Naval Crown splitting them. That one cried enough in the final 300m, fading into third, when Curatolo had to get very serious with Mouheeb who, as he had done in the trial, responded gamely to gain a gutsy success. They posted the fastest time in the history of the race in the process, 1:36.46. I

t was a first Meydan winner, since taking over at Jebel Ali Stables, for trainer Nicholas Bachalard who, from his previous base in Saudi Arabia, did win the 2017 UAE 1000 Guineas with Nashmiah.

It was a second success from Jebel Ali Stables in this race for the trainer's main patron, Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, following in the hoofprints of Market Rally who landed the prize in 2016 for Dhruba Selvaratnam.

Curatolo, riding his first Meydan winner, said: “This horse is such a fighter and to ride my first winner here in a big race is just brilliant.

“I always thought I could get there in that long straight and, credit to the horse who has really fought hard for me. I think he will stay further so I imagine we will look at the UAE Derby but we can enjoy this first!”
