Great British Stallion Showcase Launched

The Great British Stallion Showcase 2021 was launched by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) and Great British Racing International (GBRI) on Monday.

The online format is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that prevented the TBA's Flat Stallion Parade and the National Hunt Stallion Showcase from taking place this year. Photos and videos of each participating stallion, as well as audio clips from stud managers, pedigree and fees are all available at www.greatbritishstallionshowcase.co.uk. In addition, the stallion pages also include the stallions' British EBF eligibility where appropriate. Following the theme of the live stallion parades, the Great British Stallion Showcase 2021 features first- and second-season Flat stallions and National Hunt stallions of all ages.

Claire Sheppard, Chief Executive of the TBA, said, “The TBA and GBRI are delighted to launch the Great British Stallion Showcase for 2021. While sadly the restrictions around Covid-19 have disrupted this year's renewals of our annual Flat Stallion Parade and National Hunt Stallion Showcase, we wanted to offer breeders the next best opportunity to explore and view the outstanding stallion offering in Britain this year.

“Our team at the TBA have liaised closely with stallion studs to source a range of visual and audio assets, while the GBRI team have successfully built a user-friendly, practical website which contains a wealth of information on each stallion. We are grateful for GBRI's expertise in creating this virtual showcase and we look forward to further promotion of the featured stallions over the coming weeks through behind-the-scenes footage and content across digital channels, including bespoke social media assets that have been provided to each stud involved.”

Son of Rest, Flash Gordon to Meelin Stud

A pair of new Flat stallions–Son Of Rest (GB) (Pivotal {GB}-Hightime Heroine {Ire}, by Danetime {Ire}) and Flash Gordon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}-Oasis Sunset {Ire}), by Oasis Dream {GB})–will stand at Paddy McCathy’s Meelin Stud in West Cork. Son of Rest will stand for €3,000 and Flash Gordon will be offered at €1,500 for the 2021 season.

“They are two great stamps of horses and I am delighted to have them for my first enterprise into Flat stallions,” said McCathy. “I have been working to offer speed horses that could produce precocious types for some time and am excited for the future.”

Son of Rest, fourth for Fozzy Stack in the G1 National S. at two, won a pair of races the following season before finishing third in the G2 Flying Five S. At four, he returned in the Flying Five to finish a close-up second and later landed the Ary Gold Cup. Bred by Cheveley Park Stud, he is from the family of Champion 2-year-old Forest Flower.

“Son Of Rest is absolutely gorgeous, a magnificent horse,” added McCathy. “He stands about 16.2h and is a great stamp of a horse..He retired sound.”

Also standing at Meelin Stud this season, Flash Gordon, who was trained by Jessica Harrington, placed in the G3 Lacken S. and Listed Tetrarch S. at three and also placed in the 2020 Sprint S. at Naas. A 220,000gns yearling, he is out of juvenile winner Oasis Sunset, who is a half-sister to Champion juvenile and G1 Cheveley Park S. scorer Seazun (Zietan). The 5-year-old is from the family of G2 Molecomb S. winners Brown Sugar and Classic Ruler as well as Champion 2-year-old Toormore.

“Flash Gordon is a gorgeous, very athletic horse,” he continued. “He is a Group 2-placed son of Kodiac that won first time out. He cost 220,000gns as a yearling and is obviously a good-looking horse. He is a great walking horse and stands about 16h.”
