San Siro Hosts A Successful Start To The Flat Season

Over 12,000 people passed through the gates of SNAI San Siro Racetrack in Italy over the weekend, as the citizens of Milan celebrated the opening of the Flat season. The course played host to over 4,000 guests on Saturday and more than 8,000 plus on Sunday. Both the Listed Premio Natale de Roma and the Listed Premio Ciro Massimo were held on Sunday and were won by Vis A Vis (Ity) (Mujahid) and Flag's Up (Ire) (War Command), respectively. During the two-day stand, the course held many free initiatives for racegoers and their families from the statue of Leonardo's Horse, to the open-air exhibition '100 Years of Emotions', which chronicles the rich history of the racecourse from 1920 to the present day. There was also live music from Trio delle Meraviglie and the soloist Rebecca. Specifically for children, the Lombard Equestrian Centre held the 'Baptism of the Saddle' with ponies, as well as games and shows by A World of Adventures.

“Many of my new ideas came from US racing and from my hometown, Pisa's San Rossore racetrack, where thoroughbred racing has always been an unparalleled passion,” said Lorenzo Stoppini, the new Director of BU Ippodromi at Snaitech. “I want to give most of the credit to our San Siro marketing staff that were able to promote our racing season all over the vibrant city of Milan, with more than 1.3 million people [which has a] great tradition of fashion, design and top sport[ing] events.”

TfRI Supports First French Racing Industry Recruitment and Retention Forum

Key French racing industry stakeholders under both codes, trotting and the Thoroughbred industry attended a forum at ParisLongchamp on Mar. 15. The goal of the forum, organised by the French racing school, the AFASEC, in association with the governing bodies, France Galop and LeTROT and supported by Together for Racing International, was to unite the key stakeholders to share a day rich in reflection, exchange, and solutions in response to the stud and stable staff crisis within the French racing industry. Nearly 70 participants took part including, industry professionals; trainers, owners, breeders, employees, associations and journalists. All committed to finding solutions to attract and retain the employees of tomorrow's racing teams.

“TfRI was delighted to support the second industry forum since its launch, following the Australian forum last April,” said Anna Powell, TfRI Development Director. “Uniting key stakeholders to identify common goals, creating ambassadors and to develop a clear plan is an important step in improving recruitment and retention. Workforce and careers was one of the common challenges identified at the global forum hosted under the auspices of Godolphin in November 2019, along with Education and Community Engagement, which led to the creation of Together for Racing International. TfRI is a central resource leveraging expertise and funding to support its member countries around the people agenda. This work is done using the global network to share progress, analyse and communicate the global impact of this work to support the sustainability of our sport.”

Guillaume Herrnberger, director of employment and training in charge of AFASEC declared, “It was an exciting and enriching day. We are all on the same page thanks to the IFCE, before being inspired by the experiences of Pierre, Antoine, Thibault and Alexis, and TfRI before finally acting. In one day the racing and breeding stakeholders found solutions together. It is now up to all of us to implement them, everyone at their level. We are now 70 ambassadors around employment, it is up to us to bring change around us to become 700, 7000…. From today we are all at the heart of change in support of our teams.”

ArkEquine Partners with Naas

Naas Racecourse announced a partnership with ARKequine, a feed and supplements business that will subsidise the Groom's Canteen and will also support both national hunt and flat racing at the oval in 2022. ARKequine is slated to subsidise the Grooms Canteen during 18 of 20 race meetings during the upcoming season. Racing resumes at Naas with its upcoming Jump Fixture, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30.

“It is important to acknowledge all those involved in getting a horse to the track and, whilst we appreciate products like ours play a key role, it is the stable staff who look after these animals who truly make the difference,” said Kirsty McCann, ARKequine Nutritional Manager UK and Ireland.

These initiatives are part of ARC's ÂŁ21.7 million 2022 prizemoney investment plan. The All-Weather Championships will be held at Newcastle for the first time, as previously announced, and Flat racing will return to Southwell with a new Tapeta surface. The ÂŁ40,000 Coral Winter Oaks Trial will be held at that course on Dec. 7. There will also be Flat Class 5 and 6 bonuses to the winning connections of ÂŁ2,500 and the yard will earn ÂŁ150 through January, February and March at all all-weather meetings. The Jumps programme will be boosted with a minimum of ÂŁ75,000 in total prizemoney per card on all ARC fixtures run in January, February and March. The full programme for the Winter Million fixture is available here.

Managing Director of ARC's Racing Division, Mark Spincer, said, “We are pleased to confirm our specific prize money investment plans for programme book one 2022 as part of the overall announcements that we made in October.

“Our flat programme throughout this time will continue to run above minimum values, and we very much look forward to introducing the new bonus for Class 5 and 6 divided races from January, alongside free entry for flat owners during February and March.  Equally, we hope that the reshaping of Good Friday, with the All-Weather Vase fixture at Lingfield Park, will give more horses an end of season target, and an excellent day out for connections.”
