Munnings’s Shoot It True Strong on Keeneland ‘Rising Star’ Debut

Shoot It True (Munnings) had running on her mind as she flew out of the gate and flew home to a 'TDN Rising Star' debut at Keeneland in the track's first juvenile race of the season.

Jumping outwardly but overwhelming the field right from the bell, Shoot It True rocketed out of the shoot and onto the main with a four-length advantage under a hand ride. Putting up fractions of :21.89 and :45.16 with ease, the heavy 2-5 favorite was cruising as her rivals started coming under rides in an effort to catch the lone filly. Widening her advantage as they swung into the lane, Tyler Gaffalione was under no pressure as the pair came in 7 1/2 lengths best over Strummin (Flameaway), who muscled his way to running room and claimed the runner-up spot.

A $340,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, Shoot It True is the second winner for her dam from three to make the races. To The Moon Alice, a placed half-sister to GII Mother Goose S. winner Unchained Melody (Smart Strike) and the dam of MSP J C's a Legend (Lea), has also produced a yearling colt by Street Sense. She was bred to Speightstown for 2024.

Rebel Goes to Timberlake in Classy Effort

Two turns? It turns out there's no problem.

When Timberlake (c, 3, Into Mischief–Pin Up {Ire}, by Lookin At Lucky) finished a somewhat rank, then flat, fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November, questions swirled about his ability to get two turns. Trainer Brad Cox brushed the questions aside and let the horse do the talking. A freshened Timberlake, making his first start of the year in Oaklawn's GII Rebel S. Saturday, captured the $1.3-million race by a resounding two lengths over Kenny McPeek trainees Common Defense (Karakontie {Jpn}) and Northern Flame (Flameaway). The Rebel offered points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale.

When the Rebel gates flew, Timberlake broke smoothly to tuck in nicely behind the speed in fourth. 'TDN Rising Star' Carbone (Mitole) led the way, with Northern Flame just behind and Woodcourt (Ransom the Moon) pressuring from third. Timberlake held his spot as Common Defense slipped through on the inside and Mena (Hard Spun) ranged up to his outside. Up front, Carbone notched the first quarter in :23.20 and the half in :47.67 as Timberlake sat loaded and patient a few lengths back. The winner swung wide on the turn, took several strides to swap to his correct lead, drifted out under a left-hand stick, and corrected in the lane. Jockey Cristian Torres stayed busy late, keeping Timberlake's mind on business, and the pair edged clear, holding a rail-rallying Common Defense at bay by two lengths.

Timberlake has done very little wrong in his eight-month career. A June debut at Ellis Park saw him break a step slow and finish several spots off the board behind Rhyme Schemes (Ghostzapper), who later won the GII Saratoga Special. A month later, Timberlake made good on the $350,000 WinStar Farm shelled out for him at the previous year's Keeneland September sale as he ran away by 9 1/4 lengths to win at seven furlongs and nab the 'TDN Rising Star' tag reserved for special prospects. A second in the GI Hopeful S. and that fourth in the Breeders' Cup were sandwiched around a daylight victory by the bay in the GI Champagne S.

The Rebel marked Timberlake's first start of the year; he had been ranked ninth on the most recent TDN Sophomore Top 12 going into the Rebel. He was the sole Grade I winner in Oaklawn's Saturday feature and also owned the highest speed figures with a pair of 93 Beyers.

Pedigree Notes:

Bred in Kentucky by St. Elias, Timberlake is one of 68 graded winners for Spendthrift's five-time leading sire Into Mischief, who also sports a gaudy 145 black-type winners worldwide. While Timberlake is the only Into Mischief stakes winner out of a Lookin At Lucky mare, he also has GSW Bye Bye out of a mare by Smart Strike, Lookin At Lucky's sire, and a great number of black-type winners hailing from the Mr. Prospector broodmare line. The latter includes 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic, who stands beside his sire at Spendthrift. Lookin At Lucky, who is not standing this Northern Hemisphere season but remained in Chile, has 11 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Pin Up (Ire), dam of Timberlake, won twice at marathon distances in England. Her dam, by Sadler's Wells, is a full-sister to Irish champions and G1SWs Yesterday (Ire) and Quarter Moon (Ire), as well as a half-sister to $5.2-million Fasig-Tipton broodmare Betterbetterbetter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Pin Up produced a 2022 colt by Army Mule, who brought $30,000 from Tate Shaw at last October's Fasig-Tipton yearling sale, and a 2023 colt by Known Agenda.

Timberlake traces tail female to Mumtaz Mahal (GB) (The Tetrarch {GB}), who was known as the “Flying Filly,” and was one of the Aga Khan's foundation mares. Mumtaz Mahal, born in 1921 yet whose influence is still felt today, is Timberlake's 10th dam.

Flameaway Colt Remains Perfect In UAE 2000 Guineas Trial

MA YETAL (c, 3, Flameaway–Delightful Melody, by Tapit), already a 13 3/4-length winner of his debut at Jebel Ali on Dec. 16, continued to progress with an easier-than-it-looked three-quarters-of-a-length victory at Meydan on Friday. Stirred up once the gates flew, the blaze-faced bay raced in between horses as Million Doro (Bolt d'Oro) cut out fractions. The four-for-six Quartier (Uru) (Matterhorn) blew the break and raced several lengths behind the main body of the field. In a good rhythm under Ben Coen throughout the early stages, Ma Yetal gave every indication he was keen to go on, but soon encountered traffic trouble leaving the far turn. Boxed in between Rasas (World Of Trouble) and the rail directly behind the leader 400 metres from the wire, Ma Yetal withstood several brushes by that foe, but did not find racing room until Rasas was unable to keep pace with Million d'Oro, who set sail for the line just over 300 metres out. As soon as Ma Yetal saw daylight, his response was electric, as he bulled his way through, put Million Doro to the sword in a matter of strides and floated home to win easily. The luckless Quartier made eye-catching progress late on and also turned in a strong rally, but had to settle for second, although he was giving the winner nine pounds. “I knew I had the horse under me, but he didn't do much when he was in the lead and it can be quite a scary place when you're alone in front – he had a good look around,” said Coen. “He's a very straightforward horse and a pleasure to have in the stable,” added trainer Michael Costa. “He's got a lot of maturity for a horse his age and I think he'll improve for the step up to a mile.” The winner is a half-brother to GII Woodford S. and GIII Jacques Cartier S. hero Arzak (Not This Time). Delightful Melody's latest is a yearling full-brother to the winner, and she was covered by Girvin last spring. Fasig-Tipton December Digital Sale ‘A Slam Dunk’ After Largest Offering Ever

With more than 700 users registered to bid and buyers in 27 states plus another three countries, the Fasig-Tipton's December Digital Sale closed Tuesday evening with 186 horses sold for $3,167,000 across a catalogue, which was the largest ever offered on the platform to-date, the auction company said in a release Wednesday.

The online sale featured broodmares, horses of racing age, broodmare prospects, yearlings, weanlings and a stallion share in and lifetime breeding right to first-crop sire Flameaway (Scat Daddy).

Breeze Easy (GB) (Hip 310), a 4-year-old race filly, topped the sale when she went for $180,000 to Glenn Burrows from the consignment of St George Sales, agent. Fresh off an allowance win Friday at the Fair Grounds, Breeze Easy is a GSP daughter of Bated Breath (GB) and has earned just shy of $200,000 racing in England, Ireland and the United States. Out of the stakes winning Royal Academy mare Polar Circle, Breeze Easy is a half-sister to Group 2 placed and group stakes winner Artic Sound.

KBS went to $150,000 to secure the sale's second highest-priced offering, Googol Joke (Hip 32), a two-year-old son of Practical Joke consigned by Greenfield Farms, agent. A maiden winner last time out at the Fair Grounds, Googol Joke came into the sale with one win and one third from two career starts and earnings of $35,978.

Rounding out the top three prices of the sale was Sherif Ali (Hip 12), a two-year-old colt by American Pharoah, sold for $115,000 to Jonathan Green from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Sherif Ali broke his maiden on debut at Woodbine in October and came into the sale off a good second in allowance company over the same track and distance shortly after bidding opened on Thursday. The colt has a record of one win and one second from two lifetime starts and earnings of $29,628.

“This was a 'slam dunk' to close out the year. I'm very happy with the results,” said Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales Leif Aaron. “The number of entries, registered bidders, and gross all exceeded previous records for our digital sales. We got the stallion share and lifetime breeding right done. We did in a week online what normally takes sales companies, stud farms, and buyers 60 days. I'm very proud of that and proud of our team at Fasig-Tipton.”

Commented first-time Digital seller Paul Manganaro, seller of Por Que No (Hip 309), in-foal to Constitution: “The flexibility and ease of the process was great, and my mare never had to leave her stall on the farm. I am still amazed that it took only five short days from the time I called Fasig to the time my mare sold. I see the many benefits that digital sales can have for both sellers and buyers and I will make sure digital sales are part of my plan going forward.”

The next Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale will be the February Digital Sale, which opens for bidding on Thursday, Feb. 15, and closes on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Nominations are now being accepted.
