Friday’s Racing Insights: Juvenile Colts Take To The Churchill Stage

Currently in fifth place on TDN's first-crop sire tally behind fellow Spendthrift Farm leader Maximus Mischief, Vino Rosso will look to add to his haul when MASMAK hits the track for the first time Friday afternoon.

Originally purchased for $70,000 by Tom McCrocklin at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the chestnut colt went to FMQ Stables at the OBS Spring Sale earlier this year for $475,000. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, Masmak's dam GSP Nite in Rome is also responsible for SW Stan the Man (Broken Vow) and GII John A. Nerud S. hero Three Technique (Mr Speaker).

Also making the gate is Frank Fletcher homebred Top Gun Rocket (Into Mischief). The bay colt, trained by Riley Mott and piloted by Junior Alvarado, is the full-brother to GII Prioress S. heroine Frank's Rockette. TJCIS PPS

Speaking of Brad Cox and homebreds, Juddmonte has a gray colt named Dragoon Guard (Arrogate) who will be making his debut in the other seven-furlong race carded for juvenile colts at Churchill Downs. The homebred is out of GII Goldikova S. winner Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), who hails from an extended female family which includes half-sibs Weep No More (Mineshaft), winner of the GI Central Bank Ashland S. and GIII Dixiana Bourbon S. champ Current (Curlin).

Sweet as Sin (Candy Ride {Arg}) makes his first trip to the races for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. The chestnut colt, who was purchased at this year's OBS March Sale for $410,000 by L and N Racing and MyRacehorse, and includes Edge Racing as part of its ownership, counts MGSW Family Tree (Smart Strike) as a half-sister and GI Longines Kentucky Oaks runner-up Liora as a full. Sweet as Sin's dam, SW Giant Mover (Giant's Causeway), is out of two-time GII Princess Rooney H. scorer Gold Mover (Gold Fever).

Continuing the homebred theme, Gary and Mary West send Title Contender (Tapit) to the post. Trained by Cox, the gray colt's dam–out of GII Cotillion H. winner India (Hennessy)–is a half-sister to G1 Yasuda Kinen S. and G1 February S. hero Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}). TJCIS PPS

Saturday’s Racing Insights: $1.25M Constitution Colt Set For Juvenile Debut At Del Mar

3rd-DMR, $82K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, 5:30 p.m.
As the summer winds down, there is still more than enough time for juvenile first timers to make their debut. At Del Mar, $1.25-million Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale buy MC VAY (Constitution) is set for his inaugural trip. Out of Dothraki Sea (Union Rags), who counts both GISW Dixie Chatter (Dixie Union) and GSW Rumor (Indian Charlie) as half-siblings, the dark bay colt is trained by John Shirreffs and will be ridden by Mike Smith.

Also entered is $250,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale grad and $675,000 OBS April Sale purchase Arthur (Uncle Mo). Second dam SW Star of Goshen (Lord At War), who is a half-sister to MGSW Powis Castle (Rare Brick), is responsible for GI Santa Anita Derby champ and runner-up in the GI Kentucky Derby Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker). Shifting to the Saratoga grass, Zverev (Oscar Performance) makes his first start after bringing $170,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale before fetching $330,000 at this year's OBS April Sale. The Cherie DeVaux trainee with Ricardo Santana up, is out of MGISW Balance (Thunder Gulch), who is a half-sister to Horse of the Year Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}) and SW Where's Bailey (Aljabr)–dam to two-time GIII Yellow Ribbon H. heroine She's Not Here (Street Cry {Ire}) and her son, GSP Talk of the Nation (Quality Road).

Trained by Chad Brown and with Manny Franco in the irons, another interesting entrant here is $220,000 Keeneland September Sale graduate Walley World (More Than Ready). His dam Forced Family Fun (Uncle Mo), a half-sister to MGSP Cat Burglar (Unbridled's Song), were both produced by Be My Prospect (Forest Wildcat)–half-sister to MGSP Away (Dixieland Band), the dam of MGSW Eight Belles (Unbridled's Song). Over on the Spa main, Justifiably So (Justify), a $375,000 Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale purchase, is related to race six's Walley World in that he is out of that runner's second dam, Be My Prospect. The juvenile debuts for Nick Zito with Ricardo Santana at the controls.

Trainer Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado team with Godolphin's well-bred Jefferson Street (Street Sense). Out of an extended female family which includes first-crop sire MGISP Solomini (Curlin), the dark bay colt's dam Apiary (Bernardini) is a full-sister to GIII Go For Wand S. hero Indulgent and a half-sister to MGISW Frosted (Tapit). All are out of MGSW Fast Cookie (Deputy Minister), who is a half to Champion 2-year-old colt Midshipman (Unbridled's Song). TJCIS PPS

Friday’s Racing Insights: Miss Temple City’s First To Race Hits The Turf

PERSIA (War Front), making her juvenile debut for breeder Ramona Bass and her son Perry, is the first offspring to race out of Miss Temple City (Temple City), who posted two of her three career Grade I wins against the boys. Purchased by Steve Young for $2.5 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017, Miss Temple City is a full-sister to GSW Pricedtoperfection, herself a $775,000 FTKNOV grad. Trained by Richard Mandella, Persia will have the services of Hector Berrios.

Also entered is SF Racing homebred Gerwig (Kitten's Joy), who counts GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint hero Bobby's Kitten and MGSW Camelot Kitten as full-brothers. SF paid $350,000 for dam Celestial Woods (Forestry) in foal to Candy Ride (Arg) at FTKNOV in 2018  The chestnut filly will be ridden by Ramon Vasquez for trainer Tim Yakteen. TJCIS PPs

The dark bay is the first to race for dam Indigo Butterfly (Fr) (Le Harve {Ire}), a half-sister to English SW & GSP So Will I (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) and to Group 2 winner Sand Vixen (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the dam of GIII Saratoga Oaks and G2 Cape Verdi S. heroine With the Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). The European-style grass course situated on the Kentucky side of the southern border with Tennessee cards a maiden finale which draws $450,000 Keeneland September graduate from last year, PUBLIUS (Constitution). Bred by Twin Creeks Farm, the bay colt debuts out of Sharp Instinct (Awesome Again), who is the dam of seven winners from nine to race. The Brad Cox trainee, ridden by Florent Geroux, is a half-brother to GIII Excelsior S. hero Send It In (Big Brown).
