Maximus Mischief Gets First Stakes Winner In Gulfstream’s Sharp Susan S.

Let Them Watch kept her undefeated record intact while providing her freshman sire (by Into Mischief) with his first stakes winner Sunday. A 6 1/4-length maiden winner when unveiled against Florida-breds over the Gulfstream main track July 7, the bay earned favoritism again at 4-5 for her jump into stakes company. Keeping pressure up front on leader Avellino (Adios Charlie), Let Them Watch was content to sit second only momentarily and, once given her head, quickly picked up her pace to strike the front two furlongs from the money. With a safe lead built up pas the quarter pole, she cruised home under wraps to win easily as Kiss closed in from off the pace to fill the exacta.

“When I was working her, I thought she didn't need to be on the lead,” said winning jockey Hector Diaz. “But she has so much speed, that she gets it. She got a little tired late because we moved a little early. I think she's going to keep improving.”

Maximus Mischief is the second Spendthrift freshman sire to pick up his first stakes winner following Omaha Beach earlier in the day Sunday. A half-sister to another Florida-bred stakes winner in It's High Time (Gone Astray), Let Them Watch is out of a half to GI Vosburgh S. winner Black Seventeen (Is It True). Her dam foaled an Awesome Slew filly last year and was bred to Uncle Chuck again for 2024 afer not producing a foal this year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

U S Navy Flag Sires First Stakes Winner At Deauville

Ocean Vision became the first stakes winner for his three-time Group 1-winning sire (by War Front) with a rallying victory in the Listed Prix de la Valley d'Auge at Deauville on Saturday. A winner at first asking at Dundalk in April, the bay was fourth in his next two starts including the May 21 G3 Marble Hill S. at the Curragh to subsequent Group 2 winner Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never).

One of the longer shots on the board, the Tim Donworth trainee raced near the tail of the field down the straight until half-way. Shifted out, he began to edge past rivals up the extreme outside, until just pipping the group-placed Vicious Harry at the line. His Donworth-trained stablemate Kokachin was just touched off for second in a blanket finish.

“Jim Ryan called me and told me he had a horse for me that he thought would be better suited by the ground in France,” explained trainer Tim Donworth. “That was two months ago and ever since he arrived I had this race in mind for him. I had worked him recently with the filly [Kokachin] and I felt they both had a good chance of getting a share of the money. He is a horse that's slow at the start, but capable of finding more and more in the latter stages providing there is a good pace.  That is what I said to Maxime [Guyon] and he rode a great race. I have no words, it's pure magic, my first listed race for my first Deauville meeting and my parents are here. We will see what could be next, the filly seems to be on her best distance, but the colt might go further.”

The third winner of eight foals, Ocean Vision is the first offspring of the listed-placed Balaagha to earn black-type with Saturday's victory. From the extended family of Grade I winners Echo Zulu (Gun Runner), Echo Town (Speightstown) and Engine One (Our Michael), she has a yearling colt by El Kabeir still to come. First Black-Type Winner for Freshman Sharp Azteca

Tyler's Tribe became the first black-type winner for his freshman sire (by Freud) with a daylight score in the Prairie Gold Juvenile S. Saturday at Prairie Meadows. Just like in his debut June 20 over this surface at a furlong shorter, the 2-year-old dark bay opened a clear lead early and stayed there. After capturing his unveiling by 16 3/4 lengths, he took Saturday's stakes event by 8 1/2 lengths. Tyler's Tribe broke from the rail Saturday, blazed to the front, set :22.07 and :45.16 fractions, and barreled home a sharp victor while never threatened.

Sharp Azteca, winner of the GI Cigar Mile H. in 2017, now has seven winners and one stakes winner in his nascent stallion career. He stands at Three Chimneys near Midway, Kentucky.

Tyler's Tribe topped the 2021 Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Fall Sale at $34,000. His dam produced a Good Samaritan colt last year that sold as a short yearling at Keeneland January for $15,000 to Kentucky River Racing. Filly Beats the Boys to Become First Stakes Winner for Good Magic

The Doug O'Neill-trained Vegas Magic became the first black-type winner for freshman sire Good Magic (by Curlin) with a late-closing, nail-biting rush to the front in Pleasanton's Everett Nevin S. One of three fillies going up against colts, Vegas Magic bided her time near the back of the field early, content to let others duke it out up front as the fractions clicked by in :22.07 and :45.17. Still well back in sixth at the top of the stretch, Vegas Magic suddenly closed with a vengeance, splitting horses late and hurling toward the wire in a rush. She got up just in time, winning by a nose as the 6-5 favorite.

Vegas Magic is unbeaten in two starts. The bay was unveiled June 11 at Santa Anita, winning a five-furlong maiden special weight by a length to become her sire's second career winner and is now his first stakes winner. Good Magic, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2017, stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farm near Paris, Kentucky and has four career winners to date.

A $100,000 purchase at OBS March after working in :10 2/5, Vegas Magic has a yearling half-sister by Kantharos. Her dam also produced a filly by Sharp Azteca Apr. 9. Click for the Equibase.com chart.
