‘All The Right Angles And A Great Frame’: Omaha Beach’s First Foal Is A Colt

Spendthrift Farm's Omaha Beach, War Front's brilliant three-time Grade 1-winning 3-year-old of 2019, sired his first reported foal on Jan. 27 when a colt was born at Burleson Farms in Midway, Ky.

“We are thrilled with our first Omaha Beach foal and excited to have 3 more coming here on the farm,” said Lyn Burleson. “This colt has all the right angles and a great frame to go with it. Very athletic.”

Bred by Nice Guys Stable, the gray colt is the first foal out of the young Scat Daddy mare Two Sugars, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Calculator and stakes winner Arms Runner.

Omaha Beach retired to Spendthrift after a decorated 3-year-old campaign in 2019. He jumped onto the Triple Crown trail with three consecutive victories including the Rebel S. (G2) over 2-year-old champion Game Winner and Arkansas Derby (G1) over Improbable and eventual Kentucky Derby winner Country House.

That fall, Omaha Beach defeated older horses and leading sprinter Shancelot when winning the Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. (G1), running six furlongs in 1:08 3/5, and he posted an easy 2 ¾-length victory over Grade 1 winner Roadster in the Malibu S. (G1) to close out his campaign. He was also runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

An earner of $1,651,800, Omaha Beach is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Charming, making him a half-brother to 2014 Breeders' Cup winner and Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, Take Charge Brandi. He covered 215 mares from his popular first book in 2020 and will stand his second season in 2021 for a fee of $35,000 S&N.

‘She’s Going To Be A Knockout Yearling’: First Foal Is A Filly For Spendthrift Farm’s Coal Front

Spendthrift Farm's Coal Front, the five-time graded winner and earner of over $1.8 million, sired his first reported foal on Jan. 26 when a filly was born at Shade Tree Farm in Ocala, Fla.

“This is a good foal. Nice, big, strong filly with a lot of leg, good shoulder and hip. I like her best of the three foals the mare's had,” said Bert Pilcher, owner of Shade Tree Farm. “She was quickly up and quickly nursed, everything was perfect. If I owned the stallion, I'd sure be happy about this foal. I think she's going to be a knockout yearling.”

Bred by Tracy Pinchin & Kenneth D'Oyen, the flashy bay filly is out of the Wildcat Heir mare Defying Gravity, an 11-time winner on the track who hails from the immediate family of multiple graded stakes winner and sire Too Much Bling.

An earner of $1,825,280, Coal Front captured graded stakes at five different distances – from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on dirt – and at five different racetracks. After a dominant maiden win on debut at Keeneland and allowance victory over eventual Grade 1 winner Patternrecognition at Belmont in his second start, the striking dark bay colt stayed undefeated with a victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga. He closed out his 3-year-old season with a win in the six-furlong G3 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx, earning a 107 Beyer – one of the fastest of the year by a sophomore.

Coal Front won the seven-furlong G3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream as a 4-year-old and carried his top form into his 5-year-old season, winning the 1 1/16-mile, $500,000 G3 Razorback Stakes at Oaklawn and $1.5-million G2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan.

A $575,000 2-year-old purchase, Coal Front was victorious in eight of 13 lifetime starts before retiring to Spendthrift, where he is set to stand his second season for a fee of $5,000 S&N.

Preservationist Sires First Foal

Grade I-winning millionaire Preservationist (Arch–Flying Dixie, by Dixieland Band) was represented by his first reported foal with the arrival of a filly produced by the Giant's Causeway mare Win Crafty Jan. 8 in Ocala, FL.

A daughter of graded stakes winner Win Crafty Lady, Win Crafty is a half-sister to Grade I winner Harmony Lodge (Hennessy), GII Arkansas Derby Graeme Hall (Dehere) and to stakes-winning and graded stakes-producing mare Win's Fair Lady (Dehere). Win Crafty is also a full-sister to Win McCool, herself a graded stakes producer and granddam of Grade I-winning millionaire Magnum Moon (Malibu Moon).

Breeder Dominique Damico of Fly By Breeding described her Preservationist filly as “a beautiful filly with great bone, a super shoulder and great presence”, and indicated that she will be retained to race.

A $485,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Centennial Farms, Preservationist was trained by Jimmy Jerkens and vanquished top-class rivals including Catholic Boy (More Than Ready), Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) and Tom's d'Etat (Smart Strike) when winning the GI Woodward S. and GII Suburban S. in 2019. He earned $1,084,550 and is one of 18 graded stakes winners under his first three dams.
